Not picking on you but your skin is most likely dry because you are washing it with soap in the shower and over scrubbing it. This will remove surface oils but also risks irritating the skin. Also clay masks are very drying. They are best for oily skin not dry. If your skin is dry have you thought about using a cream cleanser and a hot , damp flannel? That would exfoliate more gently.

hollinhurst84 · 16/10/2016 16:59

My routine up there ^^ somewhere looks long but it's maybe 3 mins in the am, 5 mins in the evening

Dulcimena · 16/10/2016 17:45

I think mine's pretty simple tbh. Reactive, tends to be dehydrated, almost 40 year old skin.

Am:
Ren rose cleansing gel in shower
Hado Labo premium hyaluronic acid serum
Korres yogurt sunscreen SPF30

Pm:
Simple eye makeup remover cream if necessary
Bioderma sensibio
Balance me face wash (pure skin? it was free with a magazine)
Ordinary 2% retinoid every other night
Currently introducing Ordinary 10% lactic on the other night
NZ Skinfood moisturiser

I have loads of treatments, masks and acids in, but never get round to actually using them...

Indecisivejo · 16/10/2016 19:54

Thanks for all your replies so far, I LOVE knowing what everyone uses :)

So interesting! I'm late-20s, oily skin, currently on antibiotics for hormonal acne. I've made a real effort the last year or so to strip back and use natural/organic products where possible, after years of using harsh cleansers to dry out spots etc.

AM:
La Roche Posay effaclar face wash gel in the shower (won't buy this again, absolutely nothing special about it at all)
Or if not showering in the morning just splash with water
Boots botanics organic moisturiser. The one with rosehip. Tiny bit only on any dry/tight patches as it's v rich and if I use too much am shinier than the sun by lunchtime.
Facial spf if spending any significant time outside. Usually only weekends. I picked up a couple of Coppertone SPF27 ones in the £ shop a while back which are really nice and light.

PM:
Take off eye makeup with L'oreal micellar water
Wash face with La Roche Posay as AM
Moisturiser as AM but apply more

3x a week PM:
Nip + Fab extreme glycolic pads
Boots botanic organic facial oil with rosehip. Love this stuff but can't use it too often.

Clay mask maybe once a month.

ChickenVindaloo · 17/10/2016 15:17

There are some naughty skin sins on this thread IMHO:

Facial scrub - St Ives is the devil's work
Double cleansing/Too many products
Face wipes
Liz Earle - those products are "pleasure products" - they feel nice/smell nice but they don't do much good.
Not washing your face in the morning/only using water - I once read that if you sleep with a partner (or a pet!), THEIR dead skin cells/hair and sweat as well as your own end up on your face. You need to wash with cleanser!

Silk pillowcases - there's one you can buy called SKIN or something. It's about £30. Personally, I use satin ones, about £7 off ebay or Amazon.

SuperFlyHigh · 17/10/2016 15:24

according to the Kiehls sales advisor its oily on all parts but more on T-zone - I think it's drier on cheeks personally.

Just switched to cleansing balm (Pure) in mornings and have been trying to remove at nights with cleanser/toner combined and micellar water.

use a serum and moisturiser when I remember at night but a day cream and SPF though been skimping in day...

not used a mask for ages. use a facial scrub on weekends.

I'm 45 and have no wrinkles. good genes.

SuperFlyHigh · 17/10/2016 15:26

I just splashed a load out on a Kiehls moistursier and it makes me look oily. really bad. waste of money but suppose will use it.

I like:-

Clarins one step orange facial cleanser - may repurchase as lovely and Burts Bees did a nice orange scrub too.

dannyglick · 17/10/2016 15:28

Oh dear, ChickenVindaloo, it seems I'll have to get up a bit earlier to cleanse my face, instead of just using water most mornings, as I sleep with both partner and dog!
Have ordered a couple of silk pillowcases from JL.
Love my Liz Earle, though!

ChickenVindaloo · 17/10/2016 15:31

All right Danny, 2/3 ain't bad. I'll let you off with the Liz Earle. Grin

plumstone · 17/10/2016 15:43

AM:
Clarins creamy cleanser washed off with hot flannel
Nip and Fab bee venom pad
Nivea Q10 serum and Caudalie eye cream
Clarins hydra quench moisturiser
LRP SPF 50 every day without fail

PM:
Bobbi Brown Clensing oil - takes off make up
Cetaphil cleanser - washes face
Nip and Fab pad of some sort OR Ordinary 2% retinol
Body Shop Vitamin E night oil massaged in with Body shop facial massager

Three times a week hydrating sheet mask
Once a month facial (laser, extraction etc - like medial ones not relaxing ones)

Not loyal to anything specific if I can afford it and it works great (Sunday Riley I am looking at you) if I can get the same results and a fraction of the price (Ordinary 2%) then I save the money - Bit of Brand slut if I am honest!!

SuperFlyHigh · 17/10/2016 16:01

Chicken whatever works for you works for you!

My mum smoked for 15 years (until she was 30), used soap and water and Nivea and only in past 10-15 years used anti ageing creams (L'Oreal) but always used SPF in sun. She's 75 and has great skin.

Her mother (my nana) stayed OUT of the sun or used SPF, similar simple skincare routine, Ponds Cold cream etc - even better skin than my mum!

Both passed or pass in case of my mum for 10-15 years younger.

Good genes help I know but not that many products are wonder ones for the skin and can perform miracles.

In fact the one person I do know who uses Botox, she looks quite good but smokes so has smokers lines.

SuperFlyHigh · 17/10/2016 16:02

Chicken - also double cleansing is the 'in' thing to do - personally I don't do it much not sure I believe in it.

I think if you like what you like and your skin likes it too whether La Prairie or Superdrug own then use it! Smile

ChickenVindaloo · 17/10/2016 16:16

Yes, it's simply good genes, not smoking, not going in the sun/spf and retin-a (the latter being the only product that actually works)

The rest (good diet, over the counter products) is just the icing on the cake, really.

But that won't sell many magazines or tubs and tubs of overpriced bollocks!

SuperFlyHigh · 17/10/2016 17:06

Chicken I do believe in a good diet, restricting booze etc but my nana smoked and drank like a trooper too!

I'm sure an unhappy life shows in the face.

not to say I don't think Alpha Gold etc, Retin A isn't any good but my nana and mum ALWAYS emphasised good skincare in the sun!

SuperFlyHigh · 17/10/2016 17:06

Also a good foundation with or without sunscreen protects skin from sun so they say.

IsItTimeForWine · 17/10/2016 17:23

Skin prone to break outs so I am very wary of using new products.

Simple face wash
No7 moisturizer
No7 under eye cream (when I remember)
Clinique skin clearing range when having a breakout ( highly recommend these, they're brilliant)
Exfoliate every now and then using a flannel Wink

Have been known to use Olay -the anti wrinkle moisturizer which is quite nice but not good enough for winter

ChickenVindaloo · 17/10/2016 17:23

Yes, layering of products is good. BUT I think foundation with SPF can lead to a false sense of security as no-one ever puts enough on to get the full SPF factor. Ideally, you only apply foundation where it's needed anyway.

And yes, you can see the difference between people who have had a hard life and those of us who get enough sleep etc! I think it's because the former group tend to smoke/drink as well due to stress. Whereas the latter have more time/money/inclination to invest in themselves.

IsItTimeForWine · 17/10/2016 17:24

I must get a better skincare routine now I'm getting old. My face will thank me Grin

IsItTimeForWine · 17/10/2016 17:43

Looking forward to the brave person who will say they just use a makeup wipe and be done with it!
If my skin would let me, I would so do that Grin

LumpySpacedPrincess · 17/10/2016 17:43

Separate sunscreen is essential, sunscreen in products means they take something out to put it in and no one ever applies enough. Double cleansing is essential if you wear sunscreen every day, plus it makes your skin feel spanking gorgeous!

SuperFlyHigh · 17/10/2016 18:17

Isittimeforwine I used face wipes when I'm lazy and SIL used the oily skin ones (boots own brand) all the time! Her skin is fine!

Though it's frowned upon at least it's better than not taking it off at all!

ChickenVindaloo · 17/10/2016 18:38

Yes, that is my one sin is that in the AM in winter, I usually cba to put on a moisturiser AND a sunscreen so I use Avene SPF 20 moisturiser. But I get minimal exposure. In fact, between November and Feb, I don't see the sun at all on work days!!

bibijay · 13/11/2016 14:49

AM -flannel, warm water, Vit C serum (I've been using Garnier dark spot but am about to switch to Ordinaries 23%), serum (using up Boots No.7 protect&perfct but switching to Naruko Magnolia on advice of Bodem (thank you!), Aldi face cream, LRP Antihelios sunscreen factor 50.
Takes 5 minutes, and most days I just add under eye concealer and lip gloss.

PM -flannel, warm water, wait 30 mins then Tretinoin 0.5%, wait 1 hour then Aldi night cream (if I could afford it is switch to Naruko Magnolia night jelly).

I'm 55, look fine when I make an effort, but a bit Rab C Nesbitt the rest of the time.
Recent convert to informed skincare!

bibijay · 13/11/2016 14:54

Sorry I meant thanks to Botemp not Bodem!
