So exciting......you could try one of these weird dog feeder, which we've used in classes.
He will want to gobble a lot at the beginning, probably as he's been wary of other dogs nicking his food in rescue. After a few days, you can start holding food back and use it for training, if he's that food oriented. We also used to remove idiot dogs food in the middle of breakfast, just so he knew we could and to avoid guarding behaviour.
Other tips, (as if I know) are to make sure you give him a full body touch each day. Feel each paw if you can and progress so that you can look in his mouth etc. Most rescues haven't been touched much, so it's just building up to him trusting you to let him do that. Make's vets and grooming a lot easier.
He''ll be so knackered after that journey, I bet his whole routine is stuffed. Lots of little meals and lots of quiet time, if you can.
