Would you wear last years clothes?

Sorting out my wardrobe I have so many (about 20) pieces of clothes that I bought last autumn/winter and never got round to wearing.
Luckily I tried them on and still love them but my friend said she wouldn't be seen dead in last years clothes ...
Opinions ?
Surely if the things are still in good condition what's the problem?
It's things that never go out of fashion (my wardrobe is basic central)
I'm not planning on throwing hundreds of pounds of clothes away

I posted earlier about my own clothes lasting many years but reading other people's responses has made me think of a knitted top I bought for DD1. It was cream acrylic with a textured pattern knitted into it. It was from QS and I bought it in 1993 when she was a baby and at that time it was a longish sweater dress she wore over patterned tights. I eventually put it in the recycling in about 2000/2001 when DD2 was 5 at which point she was wearing it as a short jumper over jeans or under denim dresses.

It must have been worn two or three hundred times over the 8 years we had it, through weaning and potty training and all the other messy stages of youth. It was as fresh looking at the end as was in the beginning. Best £2.00 I ever spent.

Who can tell? Do they have the year printed on them?

Actually, I do have a few t-shirts / polos, from particular camps or events, that do have the date on them Grin

Like others, I have quite a few things I still wear, that are certainly older than my now grown up children. Definitely from the last century.

"last year" ha ha ha ha

Currently sporting 8 year old, admittedly threadbare, denim shorts.

Is your mate wearing instantly recognisable Dior couture, and does she spend her days with Anna Wintour and 'style bloggers' and that's why she won't be seen dead in last year's threads?

Is she Ivana Trump or Daphne Guinness or a similar idiot?

Even if not, if she's giving her 'last season' threads to you, encourage her to up the ante a bit. Shop in Selfridges and Harvey Nicks. You could even giver her a list?

I wore the dress that I bought for my 18th birthday party to an event last month. I am 35!

Most of my clothes are charity shop finds. I'm probably wearing last century's clothes in some cases :)

I still have the boots that I bought the day my second eldest niece was born (I was in the shop trying them on when I got the new by text).

She is 13 now. They are long winter boots so don't get that much wear so stil in great condition.

You what what? Why wouldn't anyone? Some of mine are 10+!

MilosMum82 · 26/08/2016 10:46

This is insane! I like to update my wardrobe every now and again, but there's no way I'd throw away clothes just because they're last season! I try and buy basic clothes which look stylish and will last me season after season! I'd only throw away clothes if they no longer fitted me / had stains / were ripped etc...

Eliza22 · 26/08/2016 10:58

I'd be ashamed of myself for saying that. She's bonkers.

I'm still hankering the body I had when I was 17 as I wore a 50s cotton tunic dress which was carefully worn it till my 20s before I had my child and thought I had lost it. Lo and behold I found it last year 20 years later in a bag of clothes for alterations!
All my clothes are 90% charity and 5% handmedowns and 5% new (new items generally mean socks, undies 3 x packs each and 2 new tops, skirts and bottoms and one coat and one jacket poss. if now found 2nd hand per annum.) I would say I do love charity shopping and admittedly I buy too much but I'm always recycling seasonally.

I still have the dress i was wearing when i met my oh 12 years ago i wear clothes until theyre worn out , she sounds bonkers some years i dont even buy anything other years theres lots i like in the shops i dont follow fashion i just wear what i like

Is this friend a trend whore? Wearing the latest throwaway fashions from remark or topshop that just scream that season? In that case I get it. Those of us who have better quality classic styles why would you throw them? Style is eternal.

MrsDilligaf · 27/08/2016 14:52

The only time I throw clothes away is when I can't use them any more - EG polyester blouse what was I THINKING! It was hideous which snagged the second you breathed on it and had a funny lingering smell.

Generally I wear stuff until it gives up gracefully and then it becomes dusters. If I go off fashionable items they go to the charity shop. I buy good quality classic pieces that last.

Your friend is wasteful. Don't listen to her.
