Would you wear last years clothes?

Sorting out my wardrobe I have so many (about 20) pieces of clothes that I bought last autumn/winter and never got round to wearing.
Luckily I tried them on and still love them but my friend said she wouldn't be seen dead in last years clothes ...
Opinions ?
Surely if the things are still in good condition what's the problem?
It's things that never go out of fashion (my wardrobe is basic central)
I'm not planning on throwing hundreds of pounds of clothes away

I tend to wear tailored things for at least 10 years and evening dresses even longer. Other things until they fall apart. So she is mad.

MLGs · 23/08/2016 21:16

Your friend is crazy.

I have got stuff that is finally coming round into fashion again after 20 years! (And some of my Mums stuff that is older than I am - particularly shoes)

woodhill · 23/08/2016 21:16

I've always wear clothes from last year or before. The quality of clothing is declining so I hang on to what I've got. I love getting out my clothes I've put away and sorting through them.

toadgirl · 23/08/2016 21:17

I am in the middle of setting up a capsule wardrobe of plain/classics especially so I can wear clothes for years and years.

MLGs · 23/08/2016 21:17

The things of mine that I've kept for 20 years are mostly jackets now I come to think of it.

RainIsAGoodThing · 23/08/2016 21:18

Today I wore a skirt I received as a present for my 14th birthday! So over 10 years old. She's mad. If they have tags on surely they are new clothes?!

user7755 · 23/08/2016 21:19

Bleedin' Nora! I've got clothes older than my students (and I'm a university lecturer!) Your friend is pots for rags!

Whathaveilost · 23/08/2016 21:19

I got a really expensive trouser suit for my wedding in the mid 90s

I still wear that. Never jacket and trousers together though.
It was hugly expensive at the time and I still love it!

katienana · 23/08/2016 21:20

My wardrobe is in a weird 4 year cycle now of weight loss/ptegnancy/post natal. So I haven't bought much new in that time. My weights been do up and down it would be such a waste to have to buy new in multiple sizes. I also still have some clothes I've had for years - a jacket I wore on my first date with dh 12 years ago being one.

PacificDogwod · 23/08/2016 21:20

Your friend has some kind of hole in her life that she is filling with clothes Confused

I have clothes that are decades old and wouldn't even think about wearing last year's clothes or indeed many years before.

I don't buy clothes unless I think they will last me at least a few years. I'm very angry if they wear out before I have worn them for a good few years.

ElaeudanlaTeiteia · 23/08/2016 21:20

Er, yes. I buy clothes and shoes in the hope and expectation that they will last a good few years at least. I pay more for this. I like nice fabrics and good quality and I positively enjoy taking out old favourites again as the seasons change. But then, I'm not fashionable at all!

schbittery · 23/08/2016 21:22

WHAT?! im still wearing the odd thing from the nineties! i recycled a favourite top thw other day because it was getting threadbare that i bought at secondary school.in about 1987!

iloveeverykindofcat · 23/08/2016 21:38

This year I finally, reluctantly threw out a pair of jeans I've had since I was 13. That's 16 years.

I loved those jeans. We've travelled 3 continents together.

SillySongsWithLarry · 23/08/2016 21:47

I don't buy cheap throwaway fashionable clothes. I buy classic, well made clothes (in the sales) and expect them to last for years and years. Classic clothes don't date because they are cut and made to last.

Just5minswithDacre · 23/08/2016 21:51

This reminds me of those Daily Mail articles about Kate Middleton 'thriftily recycling' if she wears something a second time.

burnishedsilver · 23/08/2016 21:53

I'm pretty sure we've had this thread before, at the begining of SS16.

My advice still stands - find new friends.

HainaultViaNewburyPark · 23/08/2016 21:56

I still wear a top which I've had since I was 15. It must be 25 years old...

twostepsister · 23/08/2016 21:58

I know someone like this unfortunately she has 3 wardrobes crammed full of clothes and is drowning in debt to fund her clothing habit

NicknameUsed · 23/08/2016 22:00

I'm still getting over the idea that you have 20 items of clothing that you have never worn Shock

StillMedusa · 23/08/2016 22:01

I am still cheerfully wearing a coat that my Mum bought me to go to University in 1986 Grin
Fair enough it's a Barbour (cos of all that rain and sheep you know...) and I don't think I could get rid of it ever. I may in fact be buried wearing it...

I am really disappointed in any clothes that last less than 5 years, and I replace boots /shoes when they wear out completely!

PacificDogwod · 23/08/2016 22:02

The cost of 'throw away clothes'

AngelsWithSilverWings · 23/08/2016 22:03

I was most upset last year at having to throw away a dress that I bought the year before my DS was born because I found a hole in it! SD is 11 this year. I've also got a dress I bought 13 years ago that still gets an outing once a year. Your friend is bonkers.

Acopyofacopy · 23/08/2016 22:06

Your friend is a wasteful idiot who must buy cheap, disposable tat. It is much classier to buy good quality classics that will last for years.
