Would you wear last years clothes?

Sorting out my wardrobe I have so many (about 20) pieces of clothes that I bought last autumn/winter and never got round to wearing.
Luckily I tried them on and still love them but my friend said she wouldn't be seen dead in last years clothes ...
Opinions ?
Surely if the things are still in good condition what's the problem?
It's things that never go out of fashion (my wardrobe is basic central)
I'm not planning on throwing hundreds of pounds of clothes away

you can't be serious, i guess every girl have one pieces of clothing that she can't throw away and always wear, fav tee for example

rollonthesummer · 24/08/2016 10:03

At least she gives them to you!

Does she earn a LOT of money?!

specialsubject · 24/08/2016 10:05

Friend is revealed to have no life and no interests, very sad.

Clothes go when worn out, not fitting or no longer needed due to change of lifestyle. Otherwise is wasteful and hence revolting.

I have a tshirt I know I wore to a gig in 1992, it as the new then. It still fits and washes beautifully. It was about £4 in a River Island sale. I wear it for yoga or pulling on after the gym. I reckon I must be on about 0.5p per wear.

I have about 3 jackets from Dorothy Perkins that I bought in the late 80s or early 90s lol. I still wear them! Nobody comments. (They've not got Dynasty padded shoulders thankfully).

I have clothes going back 30+ years - evening dresses which I saved so my daughters would be able to wear them. I was inspired by a friend's mother when I was a teen. The oldest thing I wear regularly is a pair of light beige suede sandals from Prada I bought in a sale in 1994. They are still comfortable & look good. Beach wear like kaftans last forever too.

iseenodust · 24/08/2016 11:26

Your friend is shallow if appearance is all. She is also not a very good friend if she says she wouldn't be seen dead in them then gives them to you.

TequilaBlockingBird · 24/08/2016 11:31

If I was only wearing what I had bought this year I'd be walking about in a pashmina and flipflops.

Your mate is bonkers. And an ecological nightmare.

DelicatePreciousThing1 · 24/08/2016 11:42

OP
Fgs you should wear clothes you like to express yourself and not be a slave to ludicrous and often "emperor's new clothes" offerings. Be your own person and use your own sense of style to guide you.

DelicatePreciousThing1 · 24/08/2016 11:44

Your friend is a drone who lacks imagination. Hilarious!

DelicatePreciousThing1 · 24/08/2016 11:45

She doesn't sound cool. She sounds like a vacuous wannabe sleb.

roseteapot101 · 24/08/2016 11:45

i still have clothes from my teens why waste, even old raggy clothes have a use as cleaning clothes

SpringBail · 24/08/2016 12:12

I have clothes I still wear from 5 even 10 years ago. In my family we swap clothes around so very few clothes get wasted and after years you may end up with clothes you had originally given away but fell back in love with. Grin

woodhill · 24/08/2016 12:33

My dds sometimes have my clothes if I don't want them. Beachwear is still around. Shoes as well.

ilovecherries · 24/08/2016 12:35

I have two cashmere jumpers from last century. And I don't mean 1999 either!

prettyusefulsometimes · 24/08/2016 13:01

I have a long wool cardigan - probably what would now be called a "coatigan" - from Next, that i had for my 18th. I'm fast approaching 47 and it's still going strong. I cringe when i look at old photos and see all the clothes i dumped because i thought they weren't fashionable; I'd be happy to wear most of them now (my arse is laughing sardonically at that).

However I'm also very happy that people do have this "bin it" attitude because it means I can buy barely worn, lovely stuff from the charity shop!! I do think that brands such as Per Una, Next and the supermarket chains, whilst providing sort of affordable clothing, manufacture textile prints and finishes that date really quickly or you get bored with easily, which encourages seasonal buying, meaning you don't really save money. It's a massive cliche but spend a bit more and look after it (and dont give a monkey's about fashion).

TollgateDebs · 24/08/2016 13:44

I wore a two piece dress yesterday, Betty Barclay in the sale, bought 21 year's ago and very now in style and fabric. I had two compliments on it and was asked where it was from, which was useless information given the age of the item. I have a number of items that are a good few years old, plus some charity shop items from days past, when the quality was far better. I have to love an item to buy and wear it and don't understand seasons, especially when they revive styles and items that were awful to wear the first time around. I suppose charity shops depend on the dumping of seasonal fashion though, so the approach does have a little to recommend it.

Amythest001 · 24/08/2016 13:45

I still wear clothes I had when my dd was a baby and she is 16 now!

ClawsForThought · 24/08/2016 14:20

I have a few items from the 90s that I can still fit into (just about) so will wear them from time to time. Scary to think they're vintage as it doesn't seem that long ago that I bought them. Shock Smile

SugarMiceInTheRain · 24/08/2016 14:27

I still have (and occasionally wear) a pair of trousers I bought when I was 17. I am now 35!! I haven't even bought any clothes this year, so my newest clothes are 'last year's'. Your friend is bonkers and must waste a phenomenal amount of money!

Trashbox · 24/08/2016 14:35

One of my cats is like this. He won't sleep in his bed unless it has a new blanket every month...

ScandiCinnamon · 24/08/2016 14:35

? I'm with ShatnersBassoon and wear clothes from a life time ago. not that I'm a secret hoarder who can't let go of stuff

Needed some shorts for a camping trip earlier this year..had a rummage in the loft and came out with a pair of shorts I wore going backpacking 18 years ago...!

rightknockered · 24/08/2016 14:37

I have a gorgeous silk dress from Jigsaw that I bought in the early 90's. I still wear it and get complimented on it every time.
Sadly, I don't think they make clothes to last these days

Darklane · 24/08/2016 17:15

I still have favourite things, especially coats & jumpers, that I bought when my son was a baby. His son started school last year!
Mind you, I think the quality of them is still far better than the stuff the same brands churn out these days. Lots more wool, linen, cotton, a lot less polyester or acrylic back then.
