Would you wear last years clothes?

Sorting out my wardrobe I have so many (about 20) pieces of clothes that I bought last autumn/winter and never got round to wearing.
Luckily I tried them on and still love them but my friend said she wouldn't be seen dead in last years clothes ...
Opinions ?
Surely if the things are still in good condition what's the problem?
It's things that never go out of fashion (my wardrobe is basic central)
I'm not planning on throwing hundreds of pounds of clothes away

I'm wearing a pair of shorts I bought for my honeymoon, 15 years ago.
Some of my work stuff is older than that.

Apart from not being able to afford a complete new wardrobe every year, I really couldn't be bothered with all that shopping.

Frazzled2207 · 23/08/2016 22:07

Your friend is bonkers. I v much hope she donates or sells het clothes rather than chucking them out.
I buy and send to recycling various things each year but have some staples I've had for years and years.

rightknockered · 23/08/2016 22:07

I consider last year's clothes, brand new

rightknockered · 23/08/2016 22:08

I am wearing a dress I bought 14 years ago.
My favourite boots are a pair of Frye Campus boots I bought in 2001

Heathen4Hire · 23/08/2016 22:12

DM told me to buy high quality classics and then add cheaper fashionable things around them. So you might have a really expensive but long lasting suit, but change the blouse or the shoes for instance. It reduces waste and clothes last for years.

Iliveinalighthousewiththeghost · 23/08/2016 22:54

I do. Clothes cost too much to just throw away, especially. When they're still in excellent condition.

clam · 23/08/2016 22:59

Just seen that dh is wearing the same rugby shirt that he was wearing when we brought dd home from hospital as a newborn. She was 18 last week.

JaceLancs · 23/08/2016 23:00

I have plain classics that get worn till they wear out - some I had pre children so over 25 years
Still love buying clothes though so I mix my staples with current fashion and charity shop finds - if I haven't paid much for things I don't mind if I get bored of them quite quickly sometimes I re donate, other times sell on eBay depending on finances

clam · 23/08/2016 23:01

And I've just ironed a T shirt that his parents brought back from Florida. As his dad died in 1993, that would date the T shirt as at least 25years old.

Liiinoo · 23/08/2016 23:03

I have sports bras older than my oldest daughter. Who is well into her twenties. I also have evening dresses older than her and two pairs of pyjamas that my DH bought me the day she was born that I have worn and worn but still look like new.

They are the extremes but I would never, ever buy anything that I couldn't see lasting me through at least a couple of years.

SpaceUnicorn · 23/08/2016 23:04

Wanted to check I wasn't the only one

Surely you weren't under the impression that everyone else you know bins all their clothes on an annual basis, were you? Confused

SpaceUnicorn · 23/08/2016 23:05

Clothes cost too much to just throw away

Not to mention the inexcusable environmental impact of doing so.

RebelandaStunner · 23/08/2016 23:22

I am actually really attached to my clothes and hate having to get rid of them. I know it sounds sad but I choose very carefully these days.
I hung onto a favourite top for way too long, I did get rid in the end though DD made me see sense.
Cool is shopping responsibly so your friend can't be .
Don't listen to her wear your new 20 items this a/w.

LegArmpits · 23/08/2016 23:30

Hahahaha

CoolToned · 23/08/2016 23:31

Yes. I usually buy from the clearance sale and then wear them for the coming year. For example, I'll buy stuff from this year's Autumn/Winter clearance (I'm in Australia) and I'll wear them next year. Same thing for spring/summer.

Fontella · 23/08/2016 23:33

I wear clothes and shoes that are decades old.

My favourite baggy jumper is one I wore almost daily when I was pregnant with my daughter.

She's now 21!

I've got a pair of Doc Marten clogs and a pair of Doc Marten sandals that have got to be 30 years old at least. Still wear 'em.

Wow, do people really do that? Environmentally appalling behaviour.
I have very few clothes, so they do get worn out and replaced often. But even then I can pull out a few items that are really old, and also as I've lost weight, I've just rediscovered clothes I'd put away years and years ago...some of them 10+ years old.

BitOutOfPractice · 24/08/2016 05:14

Today I have been wearing a skirt I bought for my honeymoon in 1996

Your friend is mad!

barefootinkitchen · 24/08/2016 05:21

Like others, am shocked by the 20 items , of course don't throw them out. If you liked them enough to buy, can your taste have changed do quickly ?

BarbaraofSeville · 24/08/2016 05:30

What do your other friends, and family say? What circles do you move in to come across someone who believes that clothes can't be worn for more than a year?

Is your friend Kate Middleton and is she fearing another press roasting like when they all noticed she wore the same ski jacket this year as she did when she last skiied, which was, shock horror, so long ago it was pre DCs?

This can't actually be serious, but assuming it is, did your friend come up with Asda's totally ridiculous '100 day clothes guarantee? Erm, if it isn't going to last more like at least 100 weeks, it's not worth buying IMHO. I don't want clothes that turn into rags after a few wears.

IllMetByMoonlight · 24/08/2016 06:25

Bonkers. I don't buy anything new, apart from underwear. Clothing manufacturing is an ethical minefield and a big environmental strain, one which I am relieved to opt out of by using eBay and charity shops for all of our clothing, thus trying to ease the load a little. I still look fab.
How does your friend dispose of her 'past it' items? At best, she has an expensive and likely unsustainable 'hobby', at worst a hole in her life as a pp suggested. [post]

NicknameUsed · 24/08/2016 07:15

I am assuming that when people say they throw clothes out that they mean they get recycled either to charity shops or to the rag collection at recycling centres?

They don't put them in the bin for landfill do they?

user1471888857 · 24/08/2016 08:45

She either gives them to me Blush
Or eBay or charity shop

princessdave · 24/08/2016 09:34

Ha hahah ha. Your mate ain't cool. She's a sucker who's bought into the idea that you must replace your entire wardrobe twice a year.

This, I agree with EmpressTk!

I still have and wear clothes that are 10 years old, nothing wrong with them and they still fit. I love buying new clothes (or older ones from eBay) but I would never ever get rid of something just for the sake of it / because it's past season, that's crazy!
