WWW's six week 10 year younger boot camp, Jan to half term, WEEK THREE

Welcome to week THREE everyone. Have you completely given up and lost your motivation yet?

This is about feeling better about yourself...not necessarily a diet per se etc etc

The Rules:

  • Sunscreen at all times. I know it's winter, there are still rays trying to damage your skin
  • No or little booze. The odd glass of wine at the weekend is allowed if you want it
  • Walking is important, a small amount every day if possible. 30 mins if you can, I am booking out lunch hours where possible to do this
  • Lots of water, aim for 2 litres a day
  • Apply body cream as often as possible. I am doing my heels daily too as they're lizard like
  • Use hand cream
  • Go to bed early, by 10.30pm if pos
  • Eat healthily
  • Be happy

The idea is that at the end of six weeks we all feel happier, healthier and glow with the good food, sleep, exercise, water and lack of sun damage.

You don't have to report back every day but I almost certainly will as it motivates me thinking someone is watching me.

Welcome all members old and new.

If you want some pleasurable homework, read this, St India of Knight and Polly Vernon talking about weight

Can I join belatedly? I've been lurking obsessively but haven't joined yet due to lack of proper body lotion. Have been using some Aromatherapy Associates oil after the shower though. Ooh, and I don't have suncream. I don't really want to do that - can you sell me on it?

Anyway, on the others:
-am booze-free so easy peasy
-walked 30 minutes yesterday at a brisk pace (am assuming school run aka school dawdle doesn't count)
-drank lots of water
-forgot the hand cream, but have just put some on now
-was in bed by 10pm which is late for me, saddo that I am
-need to lose India and Neris amounts of weight and while I love the book, the diet is not for me so am doing the eat less/exercise more thing and being deeply unfashionable by actually counting calories - however, this has led to some very healthy eating and has used up my veg bag
-am feeling quite satisfied and happy as a (happy) clam at the moment

Am I in?

CAMy · 20/01/2007 08:00

Happy weekend everyone

Birthday tea last night included an irresistible chocolate cake but only ate a very small slice, honest guv

Also small plate-load of sausage roll, chicken drumstick, quiche things.

Ate nothing after that though. Slept well and as said 10 year old is at school this am will do some aerobics.

Snow is predicted for Tuesday.

WideWebWitch · 20/01/2007 08:33

yajarome, of course you can join! Welcome. I will find you some sunscreen info in a minute, well done on the other things though. And yes, the eating less/exercise more and calorie counting DOES work, absolutely. I'm doing that too. And I will continue to do so after this threads finished.

Yoyo, well done but sorry to hear about sick children. I'm not surprised some of us descended into wine last night, I think it's ok though, it's the weekend. Being good 5 days out of 7 is 70% of the time. And actually, although 2 days of the week I'm drinking, I'm still not eating stupidly on those days. Mind you, ex mil is staying here tonight and we might go out for dinner so hmm. But will be local Indian so I can have tandoori chicken which won't be too bad.

Cam, was that dd's birthday still or yours? I reckon cake's allowed whichever it was.

From the Saga (!) site:

Sun protection
Most of the damage done to our skin that produces signs of ageing, such as liver spots, wrinkles and broken blood vessels, is caused by ultraviolet light. The rest is probably genetic. While the sun can be beneficial, it makes sense to protect your skin from UVB rays, which cause sunburn, and UVA rays that penetrate the skin and cause damage.

Use a sunscreen and stay out of the sun during the hottest part of the day.

OP posts:
WideWebWitch · 20/01/2007 08:40

And this,

Use sunscreen. You've heard it a million times, but exposure to the sun is the biggest cause of premature ageing ? think wrinkles, leathery skin, sagging and uneven pigmentation.
Mike Brown, Boots Suncare Scientific Advisor explains, 'whilst the cell has its repair mechanisms, there's a limit to what it can do. Exposing yourself to intense sun, such as on the typical two-week beach holiday, can result in overloading the repair system.'
Use a specialized sun product with a high protection factor (at least an SPF15) when you're in the sunshine for optimum skincare, and a moisturiser with an in-built sunscreen throughout the spring and summer in the UK for daily 'accidental' sun exposure

And actually, we should probably all read this: ten ways to look ten years younger Tooth bleaching is on my To Do list, has been for ages but I haven't got around to it.

www, it was dd's birthday

But I had to "join in"

CAMy · 20/01/2007 08:57

Batters, I think you should at least wait until lunchtime for that cava

furcoatandnoknickers · 20/01/2007 11:00

im still watching you all! I have chest infection so can only join in parts of the regime.
I want to be head-hunted. Will they put you up in the hall or the boot room WWW? Will you be next to the "rhino" shot in Africa 1884.!! no seriously, thats such a lovely thing.

Monkeytrousers · 20/01/2007 13:40

Got a letter this morning telling me my PhD funding has fallen through. Very depressed. Had fried egg sandwich

WideWebWitch · 20/01/2007 14:51

Oh no MT, sorry to hear about that (the Phd and the fried egg )

I've had Granola
3 bean soup
50g smoked salmon
about 3 pistachios
a few Indian hot crip type things - I just walked away to stop myself eating any more, ex mil brought them with her and they're on the table.
used body lotion all over
and heel cream
and may walk later

winnie · 20/01/2007 16:16

Batters and yoyo thanks for asking. I am emotionally unravelling a bit myself at the moment (coinciding with my divorce just for good measure). Too much has happened in too short a time and I do believe it has all finally hit me However, I persevere with the boot camp and I am keeping to most of it

Onwards and upwards. Good luck all

Sorry to hear that Winnie. You know, it's at times like this that being nice to yourself can help but hell, do whatever you have to do to get through it. x

OP posts:
foundintranslation · 20/01/2007 20:04

Oh no, I'm sorry MT. Is there any way of finding alternative funding?
Winnie, sorry that things are tough.

Went to the dogs a bit today - had a healthy-ish breakfast but couldn't manage much of it, then went with ds into town (over an hour's trip on bus/train) and bought two packets of crisps at the English shop and scoffed them straight away . ds had fruit and a healthy wholemeal brezel, though. Helped out and did a reading at the English library, then on the train home (as ds was asleep) treated myself to a Starbucks latte and muffin . Did lots and lots of walking, though (and lugging ds + buggy up and down stairs), and drank lots of water. Will be having potato, veg and kidney bean stew tonight.

yoyo · 20/01/2007 20:58

Oh Winnie, I am so sorry that you are having such a hard time. Be kind to yourself and don't forget that we are all here if you feel the need to unravel online. Is there anything we can do to help you through this awful period?

MT - sorry to hear about the funding. This happened to DH the first time around but he reapplied the following year and got it. This was in 1992 so rules have probably changed since then. Can you appeal?

moondog · 21/01/2007 10:52

OK,good tip for you gals.
Make a salad-something protein rich like shredded roast chicken with greens,or pached salmon with raw soybeans or fetta and beetroot and walnut.

Then, add 4 crumbled Ryvita. They bulk it out a lot and are pretty similar to croutons and of course are very low in calories.Huge bowl of that (with lovely herby/spicy homemade dressing,a big glass of V8 and then a couple of pieces of fruit will set you up nicely.

WideWebWitch · 21/01/2007 11:18

I was rubbish last night.

daytime was good, granola for breakfast, 3 bean soup for lunch, smoked salmon, an apple. No walking or sunscreen

but then went out and had
loadsa wine
King prawn karai
rice
garlic naan
chilli chicken
popadums, lime pickle, mango chutney
more wine
and came home and had a few Quality St

And this morning have had 2 pieces toast slathered in butter

OP posts:
moondog · 21/01/2007 11:25

Quality Street!!!

I love that utterly inappropriate use of the adjective.

Oati · 21/01/2007 15:47

OK so this weekend has been a total bust - shall quickly gloss over the deboned, stuffed, roast chicken, the potatoes cooked in cream and the lime and ginger cheesecake.....

not to mention the copious amounts of wine.

Am taking the kids swimming in a mo and am going to start taking this healthy living lark seriously next week

I will knuckle down, I will, I will

SnafuOutOfHiding · 21/01/2007 15:54

I've just been to McDonald's.

In Catford.

StrangeTown · 21/01/2007 16:05

WWW I love this thread and lurk on it regularly. I did think of putting in a transfer request from the 10/10 club as it has gone a bit quiet, but for now am just picking and choosing from both!
Just wanted to recommend Nigella's Granola recipe from Feast book, if you wanted to try making your own. It is lovely and makes me feel virtuous every time a eat it.
Will post if you want to try it.

WideWebWitch · 21/01/2007 16:19

Welcome Strange Town! I think I may keep this up even after the six weeks are up, make it a sort of rolling on thing.

Snafu and Oati (you're Iota, right?) at both McDs and potatoes in CREAM!

But I hope it was lovely.

I've had
1 piece of toast with butter, just realised dd ate the other one so actually it was 1
dh made some lovely white bread in the breadmaker so I had a piece of that
but
lentil salad
salad with capers, avocado, beetroot, tomatoes
1 veg spring roll, 135 cals
2 veg pakora, 35 cals each
and not enough water but am drinking some now
There was loads of left over Indian takeaway (bought for ex mil who babysat last night) but I didn't have any. And I've resisted more bread

OP posts:
Oati · 21/01/2007 16:23

Swimming is off, but I am detoxing with water and lemon today ( trying to flush out all the sfat that I ate yesterday)
