LUSH henna - why has it took me so long to find this fabulous stuff?

God it's amazing. Been using box dyes for ages to cover the greys in my brown hair. My hair was in terrible condition, dry, thinning, breaking off etc.
Tried the reddy brown Lush henna, it's a gorgeous colour, plus has left it really glossy, hasn't been this shiny all over since I was in my 20s.
Did it about 4 weeks ago and the colour and shine is still as good as when I first did it. Will never use a box dye again.
Promise I don't work for them, just needed to share the love!

Never occurred to me to ever put cling film on my hair. I always struggle when I home dye, I use lots of black clamps and sit there not dating to move for 45 mins.
Want to try henna now

OvO · 01/05/2016 23:38

Yay, the threads back!

Mines waaaay darker now but definitely ginger still. Grin

I'm thinking of braving the rouge too. I've chopped 6 inches or so off my hair so hopefully will get away with 4 blocks - so 2 marron and 2 rouge? Whaddayathink? Will I end up looking like

~What did you use last time ovo? It was just marron and brun? It came out quite red didn't it? It depends upon the colour you are wanting. You wanted it to go quite a dark red? What about brun and rouge? I think if you do marron and rouge perhaps do 3 marron and 1 rouge? Or you could do brun with rouge?
Try it, you could always do brun over it if it takes too much!

OvO · 02/05/2016 01:33

It was just marron I used last time.

I'm a SAHM so if it all goes wrong it doesn't really matter. Grin

Maybe I'll buy some hats just in case.

I'd like a deep red, so maybe will do brun and rouge like you say. Or does brun + rouge just = marron? Confused

I'm now thinkin 1 brun, 1 rouge and 2 marron! Grin

OvO · 02/05/2016 01:43

10 minutes later and I've decided just to go full rouge!

Will hopefully get to Lush on Tuesday, so expect a sweary freaked out post from me screaming that my hair is neon orange sometime that evening. Grin

IDoAllMyOwnStunts · 02/05/2016 07:26

I was thinking BRUN and rouge equalled MARRON too.

Ovo I found lots of before and after pics on Pinterest for lush henna, really depends what your hair colour is now as to how it'll turn out. You could try adding coffee which is supposed to make it richer/deeper colour.

You are brave. You can always get a pixie cut and moonlight as a Russ Abbott impersonator if it all goes wrong Ovo 😀

De-lurking...

Can I use henna over highlights? I'm sick of having to keep going back for roots etc, it costs a fortune etc etc.

I've currently got a half head of highlights so the underneath is my natural colour, a boring mousy brown.

I don't want to go red red though, so what colour would I use (if I can).

neveradullmoment99 · 02/05/2016 09:16

Most henna is a variant of read tbh. It can be a very dark brown with red tinges when the light shines on it.
If you have had highlights, your best bet is to do a strand test picking some hair that has the highlights in it and seeing how you get on. Not sure about how hightlights will take as it depends upon how long ago you had them done. I think the consensus is to wait at least a month after you have dyed your hair and then use henna. However bare in mind that henna will not cover your highlights but it will change the colour of them.
Maybe there are better henna experts out there to advise. I have only used it on my hair 3 times and am still experimenting but I will never go back to a box dye.

neveradullmoment99 · 02/05/2016 09:17

*that should have said variant of red!!!!

neveradullmoment99 · 02/05/2016 09:18

You can add two colours of henna together to get a deep reddish brown. You can also get black with henna noir from lush. I mixed marron and brun to get a fairly dark brown/ red.

neveradullmoment99 · 02/05/2016 09:21

I got this from the internet. She has gorgeous hair with variants of brown and red. Mine is a bit like that colour wise.

I like the colour in that picture. I don't want to be copper / brassy which is what I think I'll end up with.

I've got a family wedding in 3 weeks, probably best to wait until after that!

OvO · 02/05/2016 15:43

Love your choice of pic, Ido. Grin

I could totally pull of that colour and style.

OvO · 03/05/2016 16:33

The rouge is on!

I made it much runnier this time and it was a lot easier to cover my hair. Though I'm an idiot and went from the stirring over boiling water to putting it on my hair about 80 seconds apart - so just about gave myself second degree burns! Didn't think that one through at all.

I'm a bit nervous this time actually.

OvO · 03/05/2016 20:24

Aaaaand it's really not that different to the marron!

Though it darker than the marron - there isn't the dayglo brassyness that freaked me out originally. Took a pic in bathroom light but will need to see it in daylight to know just how red it is.

IDoAllMyOwnStunts · 03/05/2016 22:01

Ouch to the hot henna 😵. Hope your scalp is ok! Love that colour, do you? Or did you want it darker?
Sod it I'm going rouge next time, you've inspired me!

It looks lovely ovo. You are definetly embracing the red now :)

OvO · 03/05/2016 22:19

Thank you!

I do like the colour this time, the shade is a bit redder.

I feel like I was meant to be a redhead! Grin. Now I'm kicking myself for being a mousy brown all these years.

My DC declared that I look like Merida (minus the curls!) so I'll take that as a compliment.

Here's a before and after. That brown is so blah.
Thanks again ido, for starting this thread!

Do, do, DO go rouge next time. And post photos!

I tried some of my friend's henna and ended up a glorious red/gold colour. So I bought a block for myself and did it again and I'm now stuck with brown hair with slightly reddish highlights. Highly disappointed and I won't be bothering to do it again. I've been a redhead for years, so I hope you can understand my disappointment. Its a nice enough colour, but just not me. I can't help wondering if I somehow ended up with a block of the wrong colour, even though the guy in Lush picked it for me. They all looked the same to me.

neveradullmoment99 · 03/05/2016 23:06

What colour did you buy? Don't give up. Its much better for your hair. Did you try the rouge? There are things you can do to bring out the red in it. If you cover it with cling film and keep the heat in it is meant to bring out the red. You can also try adding stuff to it that may help. If you go online you can find out about adding things like vinegar, lemon juice etc to make the most of the colour. Henna is trial and error. MIne is quite a dark reddish brown this time but I think I suit it.

neveradullmoment99 · 03/05/2016 23:07

Ovo thought she ended up with the wrong colour last time. I ordered mine online.

LittleCandle · 04/05/2016 07:42

I bought the rouge. It was a completely different colour when we mixed it up than it had been the first time. My hair feels good and is lovely and shiny, but the colour is, for me, dead boring. The glorious gold/red colour was great, but not liking this one at all.

GeorgeTheThird · 04/05/2016 07:54

My lush blocks definitely said the name of the colour ("brun") across them.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 08/05/2016 18:24

I have some Brun/Noir 50:50 on (I was going to increase the noire but I thought 'nope, keep it browner for summer'

At the moment, my head is wrapped in two layers of clingfilm and a turban wrap towel , the henna was hot when it went on, so I'm in line for redder tones.

I love the condition as much as the colour. Much softer than box dye. My hair is a bit longer at the moment, I have little tendrils at my neck Grin

Wash off any time from 7pm, or by the time my pesky teens get out the shower, itll be 9pm Wink
