LUSH henna - why has it took me so long to find this fabulous stuff?

God it's amazing. Been using box dyes for ages to cover the greys in my brown hair. My hair was in terrible condition, dry, thinning, breaking off etc.
Tried the reddy brown Lush henna, it's a gorgeous colour, plus has left it really glossy, hasn't been this shiny all over since I was in my 20s.
Did it about 4 weeks ago and the colour and shine is still as good as when I first did it. Will never use a box dye again.
Promise I don't work for them, just needed to share the love!

Green - it's to do with how the hair takes the henna. My first strand test of brun on highlighted hair had a green tinge, this went after a day or so. Apparently if I'd used rouge first then brun this wouldn't have happened. Weirdly when I applied brun to my whole head I didn't get the green tint but I was a little worried.

I think you would get better grey coverage following the 3 step process but I just applied brun (about 30% grey) and the coverage was fine. It is more red / orange than my brown hair but it looks like highlights, I like it.

I've come to realise that you never quite know what you're going to get (unlike a box dye). You should do a strand test and leave the test to develop for a few days to get an idea.

Greengardenpixie · 08/04/2016 15:23

The thing though is, I would have like a badger stripe. Would it cover it if you just applied it to the whole hair in a oner????
How do I do a strand test? Do I cut a bit of my hair?

Greengardenpixie · 08/04/2016 15:29

I also don't have the rouge. I only bought the marron and the brun. Really don't want to be spending another £10 for a block that I will use very little of! I wonder if they say to use the rouge because the marron and the brun have been mixed with indigo which is the culprate for dying hair green? [ so I have read]

Greengardenpixie · 08/04/2016 15:30

I will do a strand test maybe tomorrow and take it from there.

Greengardenpixie · 08/04/2016 15:32

I was hoping for a kind of coppery colour. God knows what I will get with my colours!!!!

katiemorovsky · 08/04/2016 17:07

Yes, cut a bit of your hair off. I kept the strands together with sellotape at the end. What colour is your hair naturally? I am dark brown with lighter highlights and grey. I first used brun which gave a coppery finish. A few weeks later I did a mix of marron and brun which is a more reddy brown.
In your position I wouldn't bother with the rouge, I'd just go ahead with brun or marron (or a mix) and see what happens.

katiemorovsky · 08/04/2016 17:08

Your grey will be covered but will be a different colour to the rest of your hair. It should look like a natural highlight.

Fyaral · 08/04/2016 17:52

I'm a natural redhead and put caca rouge on about two weeks ago. It looks great and is still really shiny. I got complimented on its shine at work today. I have been using it for years but only actually get round to it about once a year or so so people notice the difference. I have never had a roots problem as it fades well and I am a big ginge anyway Grin

Fyaral · 08/04/2016 17:53

Btw that pic was taken just now after not brushing hair since 6.30am and teaching all day so looking pretty good!

Greengardenpixie · 08/04/2016 17:56

I was going to do a mix. My hair is currently a kind of dark browny red but it is uneven. I have shades of very light bits where the grey is and they look like highlights. I quite like the colour of it atm. I did a root touch up with Clairol a few days ago. I dyed my hair fully about a month ago. The root touch up got rid of the badger stripe. My worry is just when the grey grows in in a line at the top, I dye it with the henna and the stripe becomes the highlight is the iykwim.

I suit copper and auburn best. Not mahogany or anything remotely purple!!!

That's a good idea with the strand and the sellotape. Will definetly do that.

Greengardenpixie · 08/04/2016 17:59

If I were to leave my hair, it would grow in mostly grey now I would imagine, hence why its not the odd hair.

Greengardenpixie · 08/04/2016 18:00

Pretty colour Fyaral.

On me, with sallow skin it would be so wrong though.

Greengardenpixie · 08/04/2016 20:52

so am currently doing a strand test with half marron and half brun. Got it to a yoghurt consistency and plopped it on my strand of hair. Interesting to see what colour it turns out. Tried to get a bit close to my root where the grey hair is. Popped it in a little clear sandwich bag in a sealed tub on the radiator. I have no idea how long to leave it. Maybe about 3 hrs. So about 11pm then.

OvO · 08/04/2016 21:44

Good luck, green! Hope we get pics when you do it all.

Gorgeous colour, fyaral. Very jel of your natural redheadedness!

Mine has darkened a fair bit since yesterday - just when I was getting used to the bright orange! Grin. Still very definitely orange rather than red.

I wore my hair down for the first time in years today. Was feeling the ginger love so went for the full swishyness. Grin

Greengardenpixie · 08/04/2016 22:13

Do you like it now? Glad it has deepened or are you a bit pissed off it has? I'm sure it looks great. Kind of looking forward to the results of the strand test!!! Crazy, I know. As long as it isn't green.......

Greengardenpixie · 08/04/2016 22:14

If you are fair skinned I am sure the being a red head looks great!!!

EarSlaps · 08/04/2016 22:55

I love henna! I started off using the Lush blocks after a recommendation from PacificDogswood then started making my own mixes using henna, indigo, cassia obovata and Amla from HennaBoy.

Sometimes I do just henna and indigo, but mostly I use cassia with a bit of henna and indigo. That gives my white hairs a light brown tint, without changing the colour of the brown hairs too much. It is a pain to do as I leave it on at least 5 hours, but I only do it every 2-3 months. With box dyes I got noticeable roots within a month, but with henna they are less obvious so I do it less often.

And it is messy, but as long as you clean up quickly it doesn't stain- unlike box dyes where I always had a stain on the hairline and a bit on the grouting!

Greengardenpixie · 08/04/2016 23:24

Earslaps, I am impressed. You really seem to know what you are doing.
It has left me wondering though. What of those that then wish to go grey after they reach a certain age. To embrace it [ not me at this point in time] but thinking long term here. What happens - grow it out? Does it not look awful?

OvO · 08/04/2016 23:28

I can't decide if I'm glad or not. I originally wanted it darker but then it was fun being so bright. Definitely glad I did it though, whatever colour it ends up! Grin

Ear, how long were you using the Lush bars before you became confident enough to mix your own?

Greengardenpixie · 08/04/2016 23:55

Well washed the strand of hair that I had chopped off. Feel a bit short changed. It hasn't really done that much but I suppose its hard to tell at night time. It looks er...brown. Maybe with a tinge of red but not that much. Anway, at least it isn't green. Will check in the morning and see how it develops. Going to monitor it for a few days. That was marron and brun half and half.

EarSlaps · 09/04/2016 00:12

I think I only used the Lush blocks once, then did a lot of research online before mixing it myself.

I add coconut oil to moisturise, essential oils to stop it smelling like a field of hay, cider vinegar to help get the dye release. Rinse out with conditioner and then don't shampoo for a few days if possible.

The reason I started using cassia was that it tints blond, so I figured it could help me go grey a bit more gracefully. But I'm only 36 so not ready to be as grey as I am yet! So I blend it all depending on my mood and the season Smile

Greengardenpixie · 09/04/2016 09:09

Sounds good😊love to feel that confident. Well strand not much differentConfused
Then again my hair looks a bit like it has henna in it already. It's a bit darker but that it really. This is my hair now!

Your hair is a gorgeous colour. Even henna can't give my straw-like mop that shine these days.

Apologies for crap picture, but this is my colour- as you can see it's not red at all except in very bright sunlight.

Dp has taken the kids to the park, so I am doing it now

Greengardenpixie · 09/04/2016 11:16

Ear slaps its a good natural brown. I'm sure in the light it looks really shiny. The photo of my hair is achieved by a box dye. Tbh, the condition of my hair isnt great. Its got better since i have started to dye it less but it had got to a stage where it was like straw.
