Yet do PM me if you're thinking of selling some of that SN! I went through a long phase of not being able to walk through John Lewis without having a little go with the tester...Ironic that now I'm ready to purchase they no longer stock. Frugal think those rumours must be true - it's no longer carried anywhere on the High Street Sad.

MsBojangles · 15/04/2016 11:11

Definitely comfort, cressetmama Cake

I just unleashed two new Diptique Tuberose candles, they're obnoxiously strong even unlit, don't think there's any point wearing perfume today!

cressetmama · 15/04/2016 13:46

Went for Elixir des Merveilles which is the total comfort scent for me, and stays close enough not to be intrusive.

Tuberose candles, if strong unlit, would last minutes here. DH passionately detests any type of room scent (except in the bathroom) and it would be in the bin within minutes of him catching the first whiff. Have admitted defeat on the scented candle front [beaten icon].

FrustratedFrugal · 15/04/2016 17:00

I'm wearing Dioressence on one wrist and (old) Miss Dior on another. The former is an instant comfort scent, the latter a tiny bit too formal and dressed up.

MsBojangles · 15/04/2016 17:25

Don't think Gala is for me sadly, it's one of those sophisticated, luxurious womanly fragrances like, Chanel No.5 and Paloma Picasso, scents that I've always thought I would 'grow into'...at the age of 41 I think it's time to accept that I'm never going to be that woman. Not sure if it's down to skin chemistry or a chronic case of arrested development Sad

PM me if anyone wants to give it a good home. I'll stick to BG

cressetmama · 15/04/2016 17:42

Evening scent required for How to be a Middle Aged Woman event: any ideas and suggestions, perfume gurus? Even if it were here, it doesn't sound like Gala would be the right choice if sophisticated, luxurious and womanly are the key messages. Eau Cardi? Brassy Pub Landlady? Sanseveria?

OneNightTimeMenaceStrikesBack · 15/04/2016 17:53

bought L'Artisan Drole de Rose this afternoon. it is absolutely lovely. powdery, full of violet and of course rose. something a little spicy in the opening, anise maybe, not sure though as it's fleeting. leather in the deeper part stops it being too 'pink and fluffy' really pleased with it especially as it was £20 for 100mls in good old tkmaxx

teta · 15/04/2016 18:37

Drole de Rose is one of my favourites too.I always spray my wrists with this at bedtime.Strident perfumes give me nightmares - seriously.
Cressetmama - something Chanelly,Or a Guerlain?
Amarige/Samsara?
Last day of school holidays thank God.I'm running out of things to do with 3 children and one older one who needs lifts all the time.

MsBojangles · 15/04/2016 18:54

What's 'How to be a Middle Aged Women'? If it's a comedy then the ubiquitous Bronze Goddess, for a tragedy how about, L'eau des hot flush?

Scented candles are a great indicator of spinsterhood...I shall collecting cats next Grin

YetAnotherNC · 15/04/2016 21:20

MrsC I will pm you if I decide to sell some, probably will....

MrsBojangles what a shame you don't like it, but more for me.... Wink. I do also love No5 - I hadn't made the connection, but you are right, they have a lot in common in their style. But never give up on those fragrances you think you "might grow into".... I didn't like perfume much, then I got divorced, bought a leather jacket, stopped being scared and got some attitude, and suddenly felt like I could Rock those fragrances. And if I can't, I just don't care, I love the scents so I'm going to wear and be damned. Have had loads of compliments since I started spraying with abandon! (And I have two years on you so there's still time Grin)

Sorry, no ideas about what to wear for How to be a Middle Aged Woman event- on paper I am a middle aged woman, but I'm not sure I...ahem...set a mature example...

MsBojangles · 15/04/2016 22:13

Thanks YetAnotherNC for giving me hope, I've got another two years to try and become a laaaaady Grin.

I can't help but wonder how much skin chemistry comes into play though, my skin is dry and pasty peaches and cream coloured. I wonder if you're smooth and olive and glamorous?

MrsCocoa · 15/04/2016 22:56

Tweed - ironically?

EmpressofBlandings · 15/04/2016 23:04

Given that (unless we're really, really unlucky) we're all going to be middle-aged some day (already there myself) I think you should just wear what you like. With the following caveats:

Anything marketed at The Young is out:
Anything that has a matching male fragrance is out:
Anything that announces itself before you enter a room is out.

My middle-aged frags, in terms of ones I've started wearing since I hit middle age: Philosykos, Tarocco, Tam Dao (all Diptque), Ormonde Woman, Premier Fiquier, Safran Troublant (both Artisan Parfumeur), Terre des Bois, Figue Amere, Petit Grain (all Miller Harris), Hermes Santal Massoia, Origins Ginger Essence. I love all of them.

MrsCocoa · 15/04/2016 23:46

Empress That's a great list.

Have to disagree with you on the 'rules' though. It's only with the onset of middle age that I have the confidence to carry off really big fragrances (and especially classic chypres). And to enjoy wearing things that are complex and interesting rather than 'pretty'.

cressetmama · 16/04/2016 12:52

Well, it was a riot! 24, Faubourg was the scent and I re-remembered why I bought it and there is so little left in the bottle. Actually, the reminder credit goes to Luca Turin whose enthusiasm for Edward Roucel's fragrances in one of the NZZ essays reminded me to get it out!

If the show, written and performed by Jenny Eclair, comes to your town, you should go. You will laugh until your pelvic floor caves in.

And the Gala sample arrived in the post, yippee. That's for later as it's probably not best suited to walking the dog and supervising a basement full of role players.

cressetmama · 16/04/2016 12:53

Sorry for double post; computer seemed unresponsive so I pressed twice. But it was a damn fine do.

MsBojangles · 16/04/2016 13:30

I took a chance on a very old sealed, 112ml bottle of Diorissimo, was expecting the worst to be honest. Peeled off the dusty, stained old cellophane and the box was bright and fresh, I began to feel slightly more hopefully...out came the bottle itself, the juice was golden not the horrid murky brown of my fears. Then I sprayed and my heart sang Blush

I expect my SOTD will remain the same for the foreseeable future!

I might try and post a pic later and see if any of you can date it.

FrustratedFrugal · 16/04/2016 15:04

I have really enjoyed 24 Faubourg - must wear it again.

MsBojangles enjoy the Diorissimo. In France, some women wear muguet perfume on May 1, so you are all set. I've spent all day out in the sunshine wearing the last tiny drop from my vial.

MsBojangles · 16/04/2016 19:35

Well, I've spent the afternoon driving myself round the twist trying to ascertain the vintage of this perfume. The box itself has an ancient looking design and the amount given was random a 112cc but without the 'e' in in front for 'estimated', this apparently indicates it's pre 1980.

Then I started to panic about the bottle, the lid itself is distinctive as it has two gold rings around the white plastic and I couldn't find any that matched up...until I stumbled upon a site that appears to deal in prints of vintage perfume ads. Low and behold, a match! According to the site it's 1967 Shock

Sorry for boring you all senseless with this but no one I know in real life cares that much about perfume Blush

How exciting Ms Bojangles - what's its provenance?

MsBojangles · 16/04/2016 20:24

A seller on eBay of all places, who seems to specialise in perfumes. He had consistently excellent reviews so I was brave and took the plunge. I suspect if he'd known the true age (assuming my research is correct) and the excellent condition of the juice, he'd have charged considerably more.

MsB that looks like a treasure - how lucky you are!

I really enjoy Edmont Roudnitska's perfumes - Diorissimo, Eau Sauvage, Parfum de Therese, Femme... They have so much light and are such a pleasure to wear. They also seem to have a lot of clarity, innocence and fun - if they had made a scent track to Les Parapluies de Cherbourg, Roudnitska would have been the man Grin

It is a rainy day here, so I will envelop myself in the softness of Femme.

YetAnotherNC · 17/04/2016 10:37

Frugal do you have the new version or the vintage version of Femme? It's on my next-to-stalk-on-eBay list and I wondered which to try. I've read that the new version isn't a patch on the older one... Sad

YetAnotherNC · 17/04/2016 11:15

MrsBojangles that's fascinating. It looks like you snagged a good one there. I found a couple of vintage perfumes whilst going through my mums stuff a little while ago; an unopened bottle of 1970s Miss Dior and a 1970s opened but unused tiny bottle of Shalimar pure Parfum. I like Shalimar, but am un-fussed about Miss Dior (just smells of celery to me!), but it was exciting finding them and doing the detective work to find out when they were from. My inner nerd was rejoicing...! Smile Blush
