Flowers from me too for MI & BD & all the rest of you with ageing parents.

I think that the loss of a parent, however you feel about them is something that is far harder to deal with than anyone realises until it happens. It shakes ones very foundations & the loss of the first parent is even harder, in some ways, as one has to support the survivor as well as deal with ones own grief.

Crem, I hope you have a wonderful last day.

Lalsy - hope your awful period stops soon.

The wind here is horrific - we are about two miles from the coast & there has been no rain, but the widows are thick with salt.

I also hate turbulence when flying.

motherinferior · 08/02/2016 17:23

She is home and indeed has been home all day as she didn't get back till 1am and is wiped. I think all the Y10s who went just crashed today.

I have been to a singing rehearsal which would usually be easy to get to and back from but today is involving lots of wrong choices about trains.

herbaceous · 08/02/2016 17:30

I have been battling through th day, longing for be, with an incapacitating hangover. Doesn't seem entirely fair, as I 'only' had two glasses of Prosecco. Then a out a bottle of red to myself. But stopped at six o'clock! Woke up at 3.30am, convinced I had the plague, then couldn't go back to sleep again. Only just feel human.

Lalsy · 08/02/2016 17:46

[Makes room for Herbs on "Is it bedtime yet" bench]. I feel human now, but definitely won't be using sharp objects or having difficult conversations tonight.....

Hope she had a lovely time, MI.

Dreamqueen · 08/02/2016 17:50

Happy Chinese New Year To all on here.

Trying to catch up, Herbs I was in the same boat today but with gin, looking forward to bed too.
Flowers to all who have ageing parents to look after.
crem hope you have a great last day.
The wind here is awful but no rain as yet.

CointreauVersial · 08/02/2016 17:56

The end of the day is nigh, Herbs....nearly gin o'clock.

I was also wondering about Rudy. Hope she's OK.

MrsS - I hope you got away from Heathrow in some shape or form - either on a plane or back home.

Crem - have a lovely last day, and I hope your flight home tomorrow isn't too blowy - it's been really bad here.

Funerals......I must confess, I've not given mine a thought. I know DSM has hers all planned, readings, hymns and all, even though she's in (touch wood) perfectly good health. She likes things to be done properly, though!

It brought a lump to my throat thinking of your conversation with DM, MI.SadFlowers

Meanwhile, it's all go at Chateau Cointreau. DS has just completed the first day of his work experience, and loved every minute of it - I think his "employer" has made a real effort to give him a meaningful week. He met up with a few friends at lunchtime, and others haven't been so fortunate (one spent the morning shredding documents at an accountancy firm Hmm). He's off to visit a client tomorrow, and then off to a studio in London on Wednesday. Then, for half term (as he's desperate for funds to pay for his new PC), I've got him some temp work at my office, sorting out training records and suchlike. Two whole weeks in the "real world" - DH and I are taking bets on how knackered he's going to be.Grin

DH took DD1 to the Fracture Clinic this morning - after closer inspection of her X-ray they've decided it's not broken (yay) BUT it's ligament damage, which apparently can take even longer to heal than a break (boo). Poor DD1 was expecting to skip forth and resume her able-bodied existence, but they've given her a lovely strap-on boot for the next few weeks. This caused her such rage over the course of the day that when I picked her up from school she tore it off and threw it across the car in floods of tears.

I've applied for three jobs, crepeys. Two more applications to send off this evening. Nothing may come of them, but it makes me feel a little more positive.

wordassociationfootball · 08/02/2016 18:27

Go CV! And Rose! am wimperingwith pain waiting for the boiling salt water to cool down and I can't remember when I can have more paracetamol. I won't OD if its a bit early will I?

motherinferior · 08/02/2016 18:33

Don't risk if, WAF - nasty liver damage. Really please don't.

Cremo · 08/02/2016 18:49

Sorry WAF if I suggested doing the wrong thing re AB. It's a bad habit i picked up from junior doctor friends I lived with in my yoof. Although all now v respectable Consultant types, they were the ones who would go out and get rancidly pissed and put themselves on saline and glucose drips the day after to get rid of hangover. This, so they could turn up on shift at A&E on time, not smelling of Goldschlager.
Ahem.Shock

Hope storm has passed to the east by the time we get to Paris on Wednesday morning. Fingers crossed.
There have been an awful lot of storms this winter.

wordassociationfootball · 08/02/2016 18:52

Smile Crem.

hattymattie · 08/02/2016 18:59

Finding it difficult to keep up with the thread. BD and MI - Lalsy is so right about people not wanting to discuss dying. DDad who is a doc confirms this is the case. It still makes it difficult for the relatives though.

NU - so glad the memorial service offered closure for your DF.

Mrs S - hope you end up on the ground in London.

CV - it's true ligaments take longer than bones. I hadn't thought of this before but my Achilles tendon's been bothering me for 8 months so far. I'm sure your DD being young will recover more quickly. I've actually bought a pair of heels to take the pressure off my tendon(any excuse).

Monty - thank you so much for the offer to help out DD with work experience. She has another interview on Thursday so I'm keeping my fingers crossed. I may come back to you yet though. She had a mock interview with the uni careers service today and apparently it went really well. She has to learn to use more business key terms though - prioritise, liaise, deadlines, negotiate etc rather than talking round subjects. I think basically it's all stuff that comes with experience.

Seem to have lots of overtime at the school at the moment so all going well.

MrsSchadenfreude · 08/02/2016 19:03

I have arrived after the worst flight ever(and I am used to ropy airlines). They all clapped when we landed.

OP posts:
CointreauVersial · 08/02/2016 19:08

Oh, I hate that, MrsS. My worst flight was DanAir (remember them?) into Gatwick, some years ago. Sick bags all round. I had to sit down for a long time when we got back to the terminal, partly because the jazzy carpet was making my head swim even more.

WAF, forgot to say, you poor thing! How absolutely grim. But don't hang onto an impacted wisdom tooth if you are going to run into infections like this all the time. Grit your teeth (ummm....) and get shot, say I.

hattymattie · 08/02/2016 19:12

Oh x post Mrs S - glad you're safe back on the ground!

bigTillyMint · 08/02/2016 19:23

CV, glad your DS is enjoying his Work Experience but sorry that your DD has got ligament damage. And well done on your job applications!

WAF, salt water worked really well for me (I kept some in the fridge for frequent swilling!) when I had a bad gum a few weeks ago.

Well after numerous calls to and fro, it seems that one of mums lovely carers are going to take her in to the Care Home early afternoon tomorrow. I hope nothing awful happens before then. Apparently her front door was wide open when they arrived yesterday evening, she had turned off all her radiators and had the gas coal-fire on so high they had to get a towel to turn it down. And she had cut her hair with kitchen scissors before they arrived this morningShock I am really worried and can't wait to know that she is safe in the home. I think they are applying for a Deprivation of Liberty order so that she can't just wander out of the Home. I can't believe how she has suddenly gone downhill so badly

Blackduck · 08/02/2016 19:26

WAF sorry about the tooth but MI is right about paracetamol
MrsS glad you've landed safe
CV sorry for the various woes but yes on applications!

BTM - linking arms, it's scary isn't it.... Dmum is/was the same. Hope it's all sorted soon.

hattymattie · 08/02/2016 19:57

BTM - that is really scary. My Gran used to be like this and she'd go out to the supermarket in the middle of the night leaving the front door wide open. Luckily, caring strangers always seemed to intervene. I thinks she was very lucky indeed and I know my DM was very relieved when she went into a home. She then fell in love in the home and it was the start of a whole new bizarre series of events. I hope all goes smoothly for her tomorrow.

CV - forgot to say, well done on the job apps and WAF - I'd go for the extraction. I'm really sorry, I finish reading and forget what the first few posts said, so end up responding to the latter ones. Such is the state of my brain Confused

magimedi · 08/02/2016 20:01

BTM - so awful for you. I really hope that your Mum gets into the care home & gets settled asap. When my Mum went to one there was a distinct improvement - as she was no longer worried.

DS has just sent me a joke that I feel I have to share with you. I love dire jokes & this is a great example:

What do you get if you make a hen stare at a lettuce?

Chicken sees a salad.

MrsSchadenfreude · 08/02/2016 20:28

I love that one, MM, and am chortling away. May I offer you one of my favourites?

What do the French Navy say when they are ready to set sail?

A l'eau, c'est l'heure.

I have ordered room service and think I will retire with my book shortly.

OP posts:
hattymattie · 08/02/2016 20:34

DH is a happy man - he has discovered the X Files is back tonight!

Collymollypuff · 08/02/2016 20:40

Both those jokes are bloody excellent and I shall repeat them ad nauseum.

Collymollypuff · 08/02/2016 20:41

Ad nauseam, even.

CointreauVersial · 08/02/2016 20:56

Oh BTM, how scary for you. Your poor DM. Not long now, she'll be safe, then you'll be able to relax a little. Flowers

MrsS - that's one of DSM's faves (she is a French speaker).

I made a good joke today (well, I laughed, no-one else did). DD2 made scones at school and they were absolutely tiny. Tasty but tiny. She asked what I thought and I said "well, very nice, but one bite and....scone!" (geddit?)

motherinferior · 08/02/2016 21:14

Oh BTMSad

WAF, I'd have the tooth out. Many decades I had to have horribly impacted and infection-prone wisdom teeth out at the Eastman. The drugs they gave me were amazing. I had to wait 15 years to get similar ones in childbirth GrinGrin

DP is in Glasgow. The Inferiorettes and I have been watching the Sherlock box set DD1 requested for her birthday and DD2 is now addicted as well. God I love having older kids.

bigTillyMint · 08/02/2016 22:14

How lovely it would be if she fell in love in the home. And it was reciprocated!

Love them MM and MrsS! And CVGrin

Is there no end to DH's inability to perform simple tasks? Ordering 2 photos of DS in action from the match (big semi-final hence professional photographer) on Sunday - says they cost £44 each. Yes if you want a canvas 5foot by 4foot. Only £6 for a 9x6" printGrin This is after he caused (and then solved) a meltdown with DD because he pressed the wrong button and irretrievably lost her homework question and extractConfused
