budget makeup recommendations

Hi

I am and always have been a slave to high end make up.

I have been reading on another thread that Rimmel is really good.

Dd is just starting to get interested in make up and I would prefer not to start her on my high end habit. Because to be honest I am not 100% sure it's worth the money ( although I can't see me giving up my CT foundation anytime soon).

Please could you share your recommendations for budget buys?
I have never had a kohl liner I have been impressed with so if anyone can recommend one that would be great.

One more thing, can anyone recommend some good beauty bloggers for me, on my thirties. Dds recommendations are all bit out for my liking.

Hi Enjol I remember you from the CT thread. I love high-end stuff too but nothing beats a high street bargain IMO!

My favourite high street brands are Bourjois, Rimmel and Maybelline.

I really rate the Rimmel Scandaleyes pencils (Bluffing, Tresspassing Taupe, Rose Gold, Bootlef Brown, Bad Bronze are all fab)and khol liners. Bourjois khol liners are also really good.

The Bourjois gel blushers and cream to powder blushes are also great quality and really easy to use.

The Maybelline matte lipsticks (new ones in dark grey packaging) are excellent and could hold their own against many high end brands, imo. I also really like their chunky lip pencils which I think are a good dupe for the Bobbi Brown Art-Sticks. They are quite a bit smaller though.

For super-duper cheap and experimenting your DD might like Makeup Revolution (MUR) and MUA (both in Superdrug). MUR in particular are known for their dupes of high-end palettes, like Lorac and Urban Decay - again for a fraction of the price.

There are also some decent high street foundations now too. The Bourjois and L'Oreal bases are supposed to be particuarly good. I know the Bourjois CC Cream and Healthy Mix foundation have a lot of fans! The one downside is that, even though the formulas are good, the shade ranges are very limited, which sucks for people who have darker skin.

That's just for starters...sure I'll think of more for you.

As for beauty bloggers, I like British Beauty Blogger, Caroline Hirons (she's more skincare though), AModelRecommends, and Tales of a Pale Face. You may also like Sali Hughes beauty column in the Guardian. She also has her own website.

There are some really good beauty vloggers around who are proper make up artists. My current favourites are Sharon Farrell, Harry Makes it Up, LetzMakeUp and the brilliant Lisa Eldridge.

Anything else I can help with? I could bore on about this for ages!

By the way, do check out TK Maxx for high end beauty bargains. This week just gone, I got several Stila bits (concealer, setting powder, bronzer and brow pen) for just over twenty quid - RRP would be about seventy quid. I've also seen Too Faced, Bareminerals and Lipstick Queen in there.

You do have to sort through a lot of rubbish though.

There's a brand called W7 that do some really nice eyeshadow pallettes. They are really cheap too... Just £4-5 on Amazon. I also have their primer which is fab and bought their concealer palette which was pants.

I have never got on with liquid or gel liner and khol just smudges everywhere.

Shade is the issue with high street foundations. I have never got it quite right, which is why I am addicted to my CT one.

I do rate some CT products but the other thread made me realise it's been years since I tried Rimmel etc and should give them a go.

What about mascara? I like the CT one, makes my lashes look very thick, long and fluttery. But find that it's disappeared after a couple of hours which is frustrating.

Going to show this to dd when I have got ds to sleep!

She is exited at the thought of having more different things rather than a few expensive.

NYR mascara, pinky orange tube, the best ever, one coat only needed...Superdrug. I got mine on a 3 items for £5 thingy, and thought, well, even if it's shit, it doesn't matter at that price! It beats Lancome and Chanel hands down!

Have Coty really taken over Bourjois, flippinada? That's a real pisser I don't buy from businesses with parent companies that animal test and Bourjois' Healthy Mix has been my standard foundation for over a year now! Will have to go on the hunt again...

One of my favouite mascaras is by Boots 17 - I think it's called Falsifeye - gives me lovely long lashes and doesn't clump or disappear.

Yes they have Bab. Just recently, I think.

Oh and Inglot eyeshadow if you're in London or cambridge. They do do mail order as well.

For amazingly pigmented eye shadows - makeup revolution superdrug £8 for a palette of 32 shadows. Their cheek palette is also fabulous

MUA for highlighters, translucent powder,eyeliners and conclears usually £1-2 and their makeup brushes are really good too, you're best buying them online though!

Bab M&S Autograph foundation is very good and all M&S own brand stuff is not tested on animals.

The Korean eye pencils are very good but obviously not available on the high street, but they're not expensive. Holika Holika, Clio, or the Etude House Play 101 pencils. Sleek Eau La La liners or Barry M pencils otherwise.

I like Bourjois mascara.

The NYR mascara is called Big and Bold. They do chubby stick dupes as well and I have a couple of those.

Superdrug is amazing for offers and these cheap, yet really good brands.

Rimmel Wake Me Up foundation is really nice, but its lightest shade is a tad too dark for me. I grabbed the Maybelline at Stansted because there was a queue at both Clinique and Clarins and I needed some slap. Their loss, this Maybelline is great. The Max Fac whipped cream foundation is lovely as well.
