Hatty, is he safe behind the wheel?! And great to hear that your DD is happy at uni - there is hope ahead!

Sun?Envy

CointreauVersial · 30/08/2015 09:01

31 degrees predicted here today. How's London? (evil snigger). Grin

motherinferior · 30/08/2015 09:20

Hattie, I suspect it's more about milieu than national culture. And the particular friends she's made!

MrsS, remember that DD1 does tend to catastrophise school...

hattymattie · 30/08/2015 09:23

Ha BTM - he can be a little impulsive but on the whole he's pretty good. When he said where he was I knew exactly the spot - I reckon they must have ten accidents a day there - right turn but three lanes go to two with no warning so everybody tries to get across or get stranded. I won't even drive in Paris being the chicken that I am.

Yes - I told the uni story to give hope - loads more people from different backgrounds plus a lot more tolerance and less bitchy judginess.

motherinferior · 30/08/2015 09:42

Mind you, I found my first term at Oxford horribly like being back in the sixth form, where I'd been miserable as sin...

Rosebag · 30/08/2015 10:04

That's distressing MrsS…but hopefully given time, there will be other friend making opportunities. Flowers

Sorry about the prang Hatty…glad no one was hurt though. Boiling…? Envy in London , somehow, one feels the good weather is just around the corned but never quite makes it…. Just DON'T CV Grin

Going early to see Ddad today …selfishly in the hope of getting the rest of the bank hol weekend with my lot. I didn't go yesterday, I'm ashamed to say. Both Ds's and DH went instead. DD went shopping with two friends and in the afternoon, I went out alone to trendy north London shopping street and mooched around, then sat in a coffee house…ConS phoned and I cried down the phone to him for a whole hour …what's that all about ? Confused

Rosebag · 30/08/2015 10:16

Corner not corned!

Rosebag · 30/08/2015 10:17

And HAPPY BIRTHDAY BEACHY !!!

MrsSchadenfreude · 30/08/2015 11:10

DD1's first year, or first few months, were a bit crap, but last year she seemed to have settled in really well. A couple of her close dorm friends left last year, and I think she is feeling their departure quite badly. She was also friendly with quite a few of the older girls who have now left. She does have a lot of friends who are day pupils, so isn't entirely friendless. And when DH dropped her off last Monday, the other girls all seemed really pleased to see her - some were waiting for her in the main hall, others came to her room when she was unpacking. I'll email the head of boarding and ask his advice, and try and have a word with him when we drop her back tomorrow night. It's difficult to know how much is her natural drama llama "everyone hates meeee" personality, and how much is true.

MrsS, I think there are many teen girls who rather dramatically feel very sensitive about friendships and other girls - mine especially, so I'm sure it's really very normal. But upsetting for both her and youFlowers

herbaceous · 30/08/2015 14:48

Ladies - I need some S&B advice. Specifically, the dreaded swimming costume. My saggy Sainsbo's one has given up the ghost, with the lycra perishing and going see-through. So I need a new one.

I want something sporty, rather than scenic, and which will hold the substantial works in the area I would like them to be, rather than the waist where they naturally migrate. I'm wondering about splashing out on a chlorine-resistant speedo one, and am even contemplating a 'leg suit', as I do spend a lot of time displaying my utterly revolting arse to all and sundry when 'swimming' with DS.

Any advice?

Cremo · 30/08/2015 14:54

Well this is the second melty day here. Yesterday topped out at 36 degrees and today is similar. We have tramped around two (ii, deux) brocante / antique markets in tow different villages and I have melted. Currently collapsed in the shade if a handy cathedral with a large bottle of Perrier each. I wasn't really expecting this Hatty! Grin

Cremo · 30/08/2015 14:57

Hey Beachy happy birthday chum! Another August baby, like myselfCake

MrsSchadenfreude · 30/08/2015 15:06

Herbs - I always think that Speedo don't really cater for boobs. The DDs, who are both extremely ample of bosom have them for school and hate their Speedo suits due to the lack of support. How about Bravissimo - do they do something suitable? Or Figleaves have a good choice - I got an excellent swimsuit there with underwiring and ample arse coverage some years back.

I rang DD1 to see how she was, and if things were better. She sounded positively enthusiastic until she realised she was supposed to be miserable, and then grudgingly said that today was "a bit better." Her main complaint seems to be that she has been unable to join in many of the activities, due to her hand being bandaged and stitched, and as she is quite sporty, she has found this hard.

Happy Birthday, Beachy.

Herbs, I swim 3 x a week & have used this costume for ages - it's cheap but works for me & I am no skinny in any area! I also like it as it is long in the body.

I find it does come up quite small & have to go a size up from any other costume.

Personally, I wouldn't bother to pay for the anti chlorine. I rinse mine & it lasts at least 9 months before going saggy. At that price I'm fine with that.

bigTillyMint · 30/08/2015 15:34

Herbs, I agree with MrsS - Speedo's are for the flat-chested like me (not that I have one!) I have a hold-it-all-in one from Debenhams or M&S or somewhere similar - I have done lots of lengths in it, so fine for proper swimming IYSWIM.

CremoEnvy at melty day - it's humid and grey here.

Ah, maybe MI was right about the catastrophising... Wink

motherinferior · 30/08/2015 15:43

We have been to JL and M&S today. I am done in and we're not home yet....

herbaceous · 30/08/2015 16:13

EIGHT POUNDS, Magimedi? That is quite remarkable. I might get two!

Stropperella · 30/08/2015 16:44

Oooh, I second that Slazenger cozzie. I had one and it lasted for ages. Reminds me, I haven't done any "proper" swimming for ages.

Beachy - HAPPY BIRTHDAY!! Hope you are having some treats and having a day off taxiing everyone around. And btw, a big well done to your dd2 for gritting her teeth and going on that trip. Sounds as though it turned out a big success.

Ds has had a fabulous but very tiring week doing his Combine Arts Week "putting on a show in 5 days" thing. As I may have mentioned before, I am not a fan of live theatre and very much not a fan of going to watch my offspring in any productions. Well, seeing yesterday's show might have almost cured me of that. The "company" did their first show on Friday night, but ds said he wanted us to go on Saturday, so we went to the matinee yesterday afternoon. My goodness, it was good - really professionally done. My dm, who generally refuses all invites to see anything that her gcs are in, actually agree to come and appeared to enjoy it too (actually did not voice any criticism at all, which is a first, I think). Ds has said that he wants to do CAW every year. Grin He is a bit shattered today, though.

MrsS, do you think it is a combination of "Back-to-School" shock after what was a v. long holiday and frustration about not being able to enjoy the sports activities? How is her hand? Did she have an op? My dd would probably have used a hand injury as an excuse not to go anywhere near a school for weeks...

Dd's current BFF's parents are away on holiday and dd stayed there last night (at least I think she did - I dropped her and 2 others at the beach at about 8pm for some kind of gathering and got a text at 2am saying "I'm fine" Hmm) and has not yet reappeared. I assume she will come back when she has run out of clean pants.

I haven't bought any newspapers for ages, but suddenly decided to treat myself to a helping of old-fashioned newsprint yesterday and got The Times for the first time in a looong time. Blimey, some of those columnists seem to trot out the same old crap, week in/week out - and seem to have been writing variations on the same tired theme for a decade or more. But anyway - there was an article about depression taken from a book written by a psychiatrist who herself suffers from depression. Best thing I've read on MH for a long time. It rang so many bells I could barely hear myself think. Made me feel better too. :) I think I will get the book.

magimedi · 30/08/2015 16:59

Strops, I read that article too & thought it was amazing how open she was about her depression.

I have never suffered depression as that woman does but am prone to anxiety & very 'low' periods. I do find that swimming makes a huge difference to my mental state. Just going up & down & chanting the count of the lengths in my head does calm me hugely. I haven't swum for a couple of weeks, owing to an infected cyst (gone now) & I really noticed the difference.

I hope you don't think I'm being presumptious or pushy for suggesting it to you, as I don't 'know' you very well but until I went back to regular 'proper' swimming I would not have believed the difference it would make to my mind state.

magimedi · 30/08/2015 17:02

Oh and I don't want you to think I am minimising how you feel or suggesting that swimming is some miracle cure - I'm just, clumsily I suspect, trying to say that it helps me & wonder, as you sound like a good swimmer, if it could help you.

MollyLair · 30/08/2015 17:12

Well, I was inspired by all you Crepey ladyswimmers when I did my outdoor swim. I did wonder how you kept count: I couldn't. It's really nice doing it outdoors. If you don't get flu after.

magimedi · 30/08/2015 17:15

I just chant the number (in my head) as I go up & down the lanes. Couldn't do it outside - too many distractions.

Stropperella · 30/08/2015 17:16

Ahh, I would still swim, but I am somewhat time-poor. My exercise is a 40-min dog walk once a day plus 2 hrs of circuit training per week (returned to this very cautiously a month or so ago after 6 months off due to back probs) and what with all the other stuff I have to do, I would find it hard to find the time to swim regularly. Plus brisk walking costs nothing and I prefer the view outside to the one in the pool. But I do think that the occasional Sunday morning meditative swim might be a good idea..

Stropperella · 30/08/2015 17:18

Molly, the outdoor swim sounds very appealing. If I was tough, I would put on my wetsuit and go down to the beach. But I'm not.
