Help me find my wedding dress, please!

I am getting married :) In 8 weeks :) and I don't have a dress yet.

It's a small registry office do and we're just going to the pub afterwards, so I don't want a "wedding dress" dress, I just want a nice dress that will flatter me and make me look reasonably good for my wedding. So you can probably think of dresses that most people would wear as wedding guests.

So, I'm 5'9", size 16/18 (loosing weight currently so hoping to be a proper size 16 by then, rather than between sizes), I'm an apple shape with big boobs and a big belly but I quite like my legs, my arms are ok and I'm happy to show a bit of cleavage but will need to be able to wear a supportive bra so not too much. I spend most of my life wearing jeans and tshirts, or for work I wear trousers and smart tops, so I have no idea what style of dress is going to suit me. I do know I like bold colours, rather than pale, and I've been told I suit blues and greens.

I am open to any and all suggestions, I just need some ideas to get me started.

nancery I got the shoes first and basically planned dress and cake to match!

Lindybop is fab. I have a few dresses from there and if you check their size guide o have found them to be a good fit and very good customer service.

That's what we're doing too 5madthings. Small registry office followed by a pub with soft play so the dcs can run around and play. Only parents and siblings (plus their partners and kids) are invited, so hopefully it will be very relaxed.

Blue patterned prom dress

Pantsalive · 03/06/2015 23:04

I'd second the Lindybop recommendation. Mine has pockets which is always a bonus in a dress. My top tip is not to get a petticoat from there, if you decide you want one. You can get them loads cheaper on ebay or amazon and there's not a great difference in the quality.

With the plain green Monsoon one, you could go all out on accessories if you wanted to funk it up a bit.

shitebag · 03/06/2015 23:05

Sorry somehow missed the bold colours part Blush

Check out tigermilly

Sorry to hijack...

5madthings - is your dress from
Honeypie boutique? How did you find them? I am currently looking at Dolly Courture which are similar but your dress looks lovely!

Were you happy with the quality and service etc?

MuttonCadet · 03/06/2015 23:09

That's gorgeous meandjulio

5madthings · 03/06/2015 23:12

Yes dress is from honeypie boutiques just found them on Google abd they were amazing, I wanted a slightly different style top to the dress than they usually do. I just sent them pics of what I wanted and they altered a design at no extra cost. They sent me swatches of petticoat netting so I could get a perfect match to my shoes, honestly can't fault them. I love my dress, it laces up the back with a ribbon, fits perfectly and I am now thinking of how I can wear it again. I felt amazing in it.

5madthings · 03/06/2015 23:14

Yes I agree re petticoats I recently got a cream petticoat to go with a dress from Elsie's Attic from amazon for £12, wore it to a frirnds wedding. Got no end of compliments!

5madthings · 03/06/2015 23:15

shitebag originally that is the dress I was going to get but my friends convinced me to go more bridal. I still love that dress.

5madthings · 03/06/2015 23:18

This is the dress I wore to my friends wedding with cream petticoat and a little cream shrug. It is from Elsie's Attic.

Ha no one could make me more bridal, I don't do weddingy stuff and people knew it. I hadn't worn a dress since I was 3 and in the 14 years we'd been together beforehand DH had never seen me in a dress or skirt so this was fancy for me :o

MsDragons · 03/06/2015 23:21

Were you at all self conscious wearing a wedding dress to pizza express afterwards? I do quite fancy something a little bit bridal, but I think I'd feel awkward at the pub afterwards in a wedding dress, when most people there will be in jeans, since it will be mid-afternoon on a Thursday during the school holidays.

You really do sound a lot like me shitebag. I don't think I've worn a dress more than a handful of times in my adult life. The last time was at my sisters wedding, and the bridesmaids dress she picked for me was way fancier than I'm thinking of for my wedding.

I live In jeans and converse or rocket dog normally! Rarely dress up but I bloody loved it, no I didn't feel self conscious at all, I felt amazing and everyone was lovely in pizza express etc. It was the most perfect day, dh and I have been together 17 years and have five kid's so we didn't want a traditional wedding, we played tracks from the juno album and by Joe cocker at the registry and walked out at the end to everything is awesome the lego song abd our cake topper was lego! Honestly we had a ball. I made party bags for the kids and it was just really relaxed and informal. My bouquet was made out of felt and buttons by a friend, I will treasure it forever.

5madthings · 03/06/2015 23:37

dragons my wedding was last Thursday in half term, 11:15 ceremony at registry then we walked up the road to the pizza express!

Flatsfromnowon · 03/06/2015 23:41

I love your bouquet as well! What a talented friend :)

MsDragons · 03/06/2015 23:41

Great!! We've been together for 10 years and have a dd together, so we don't want a traditional wedding either. We're having dd1 play a selection of Disney tunes while we're signing the register (I wanted "he's a bit of a fixer-upper" from Frozen, but we can't find sheet music for that for dd1 to learn :( )

I've now got 6 dresses in my basket from the Lindybop website, although their size guide says I'm a size 20/22 Shock, so I've got some 20s and some 22s to see what fits.
