Help me find my wedding dress, please!

I am getting married :) In 8 weeks :) and I don't have a dress yet.

It's a small registry office do and we're just going to the pub afterwards, so I don't want a "wedding dress" dress, I just want a nice dress that will flatter me and make me look reasonably good for my wedding. So you can probably think of dresses that most people would wear as wedding guests.

So, I'm 5'9", size 16/18 (loosing weight currently so hoping to be a proper size 16 by then, rather than between sizes), I'm an apple shape with big boobs and a big belly but I quite like my legs, my arms are ok and I'm happy to show a bit of cleavage but will need to be able to wear a supportive bra so not too much. I spend most of my life wearing jeans and tshirts, or for work I wear trousers and smart tops, so I have no idea what style of dress is going to suit me. I do know I like bold colours, rather than pale, and I've been told I suit blues and greens.

I am open to any and all suggestions, I just need some ideas to get me started.

I have to get a 14 from them for my boobs! I am hourglass so 39" boobs, 29" waist and curvy hips

I love that your dd is playing Disney tunes as you sign the register! We had with a little help from my friends by Joe cocker for thar bit. Our eldest two boys signed as witnesses along with my sister and a friend as you need two who are over eighteen but the boys were allowed to sign as well. Then ds3 had the rings and my dd wore a little dress made by another friend :) the boys wore jeans with a shirt and waist coat And converse.

You are fabulous 5madthings! Unfortunately, dd1 plays the flute rather than the piano, so a lot of that is too low for her to play. We'll keep looking. As long as she has a couple of weeks to learn it, she'll be fine. Dd2 is having the rings, she's very excited to have such an important job Grin

5madthings - you looked lovely!

5madthings · 04/06/2015 07:08

There was a flute version on pinterest.... Will see if I can find it.

And yes rings is a very important job!

Thanks closer

If you find the right dress you won't feel self conscious at all, in fact as the day went on I found myself swishing my dress about just because it felt cool :o

We jumped in the car and went to a local pub by the beach for a meal then back to my mums for cake and drinks, our cake wasa gravity cake so we had the PIC n mix cup suspeneded pouring random sweets over half of the white cake and spilling down to form a ribbon puddle around it. What can I say, I'm a classy chick Wink

Dowser · 04/06/2015 10:43

I'm getting married in a Sophie grey dress from bhs. It cost £18 from £60 in the sale.

I'm a curvy size 14 /16 and it was a 16 and it wouldn't fasten and i wanted it shorter so I had a piece let in the back and its a great job. That cost £20. It's a coral beige. Very pretty.

In Lindy bop dresses I have to get an 18. They are very small. So don't let the fact that you have to go up a few sizes put you up, they are very flattering.

Is it Vivienne of London who do some gorgeous ones?

Have you had your wedding mrs mad things?

5madthings · 04/06/2015 10:43

Yep I loved swishing my dress about, if it's the right dress you wont feel self conscious you will just feel amazing!

I love 50's style dresses and now look for opportunities to wear them.

5madthings · 04/06/2015 10:44

Yep. Pic on last page dowser it was last week :) I lost the thread we were all on :(

Dowser · 04/06/2015 10:52

Awww! No wonder our numbers went down.

Just read full thread. It sounds like you had a great day. We're you happy with your weight on the day or were you just happy lol?

Here's the thread if you want to update

LoveVintage · 04/06/2015 22:46

It's Vivienne of Holloway, Dowser. Not sure about how the y fit but have drooled over them many times.

MsDragons · 06/06/2015 22:34

They arrived today!!! Grin

5 of them are the wrong shape, either the waistline is too high (obviously designed for a much shorter woman than me, my boobs need more space), or the armholes are too big (I need more material for my boobs, not more space for my arms).

So I have it narrowed down to this one, which fits nicely and looks fairly good, this one which fits pretty well, dd1 likes it the best but I'm thinking it looks a bit too bridal (I know I'm getting married but I don't particularly want to look bridal), or this one which has slightly gaping armholes but I'm hoping that a smaller size wont have that problem, and I have a friend who would probably be able to alter it if necessary.

So wise ones, which one do you like? And how do I make it stick out? I bought a petticoat to go under, but it still doesn't stick out very much.

OP posts:
5madthings · 06/06/2015 22:50

I like the red one or the one your dd likes.

Re making it stick out you may just need to fluff up the tutu, they get a compressed in the post so hang it up and give it a good fluff up. Is the petticoat the right length for the dres as well I think most lindybop dresses need a 26" petticoat, it normally says in the description on the website.

meandjulio · 06/06/2015 23:10

Definitely the one your dd likes.

5madthings · 06/06/2015 23:22

Yes I love the one your dd likes, and you are to be a bride!

Have you thought about shoes? What colour is your petticoat?

DahliaBloom · 07/06/2015 07:42

I like the cream one best too, it's lovely. If you're worried about looking too bridal/formal, keep your hair relaxed and get some beautiful bright shoes.

momtothree · 07/06/2015 08:05

Loving the cream dress - big bold bright shoes in red. Put them on and get someone to take picks at all angles. Then decide. Love that website

Lweji · 07/06/2015 08:09

I'd go for the red.

(I love red in general, anyway)

2nd choice the cream.

As for looking bridal, you can look bridal in the read and not bridal with the cream, depending on accessories.

momtothree · 07/06/2015 08:15

Fab bright red kids dresses if DD hasnt got hers yet.

MsDragons · 07/06/2015 09:02

I haven't thought about accessories at all yet, I thought I'd find a dress first and then figure out the rest based on that (by coming back here to ask for help) So how can I accessorise each one? I will need jewellery, bag, shoes, anything else. I don't really do accessories any more than I wear dresses.

So quite a few of you like the cream, but some are going for the red. My sister likes the cream too. I like both but I think I'm leaning towards the red, because I really like bright colours.

OP posts:
momtothree · 07/06/2015 12:25

What about bright yellow shoes ... dont think you need jewellery with a viberent dress. Your flowers could reflect the yellow and red. DD could wear opposite. What colours your hair/skin tone?

Lweji · 07/06/2015 13:03

For the red, I'd go for black to match the rim on the bow and neckline, or red in the same fabric (if you can get it), or nude.

No jewellery, except perhaps small diamond earrings, or a discrete silver chain/necklace. (I hate to see brides all blinged up)
I'd go for a small bouquet of white flowers, maybe the yellow here, but a dark yellow. A small head piece, perhaps with a face net thing (don't know what it's called) to give it a more bridal look.

For the cream, flowers and shoes in a stronger colour, but not too bright that would distract from the dress, or a very light pink. I don't think it will look bridal unless you wear it with a long veil and/or very elaborate hair.
