When do you become too old to wear a bikini?

At what age do you become too old to wear a bikini n start wearing a full swimming costume.

I'm in my early 40s n have been looking for some new swimwear. Everywhere I go everything seems either tiny, too brightly coloured, not the right shape and far too young looking.

Is it time to admit defeat on the bikini front and start looking at swimming costumes?

it depends upon your figure, If you are well toned and slim then why not? I am 47 but would never wear a bikini but thats because i have a mum tum and a million stretch marks!!! I need something to pull my tummy in and not let it all hang out.

sashNmax · 28/05/2015 21:52

NOOOO don't admit defeat!! My lovely momma is 53 and still rocks a bikini! Just be modest about it (I'm 22, with baby stretchmarks and flab and still won't back down ;) )

I was really down about how flabby and stretched I looked before someone said to me why do you care? I said I don't want people to think I am hideous. And he said define society, don't let it define you.

Living by this :)

frankietwospots · 28/05/2015 22:10

I'm 43 and slim and toned, but I actually prefer how I look and feel in a swimming costume now. They just feel a bit more glamorous to me (I have two lovely Michael Kors costumes that I got from John Lewis) and that makes me more confident.

MamaLazarou · 28/05/2015 22:14

Never ever.

BastardGoDarkly · 28/05/2015 22:15

You're not too old for a two piece seen suit at any age, as long as you feel good in it.

Have you looked in places like m&s or debenhams?

Bunbaker · 28/05/2015 22:15

I'm 56 and still wear a bikini. TBH in Europe you see very few women in swimsuits unless they are in their 80s.

Pagwatch · 28/05/2015 22:16

I'm 53 and look better in a bikini than a swimsuit. I have a very toned stomach but a long body. So bikinis look fine but costumes rarely fit.

'Rules' are stupid. Only stupid people comply.

DayLillie · 28/05/2015 22:17

I have a bikini - I wear it in the (secluded) garden because of the spare twin skin Hmm. Wasn't Helen Mirren (over 40?) photographed in a bikini a few years back?

CointreauVersial · 28/05/2015 22:19

I'm 48 and still wear a bikini.

But I have one of those straight-up-and-down figures, and look like a breeze block in a one-piece. A bikini perversely gives me a bit of shape. And my stomach is reasonably flat and free of stretchmarks.

I don't think age has anything to do with it.

ItsJustPaint · 28/05/2015 22:20

Not for me even though i like to think I'm still quite toned and slim fit my age (47)

It's the stretch marks up to my tummy button that stop me .

Luckily we never go on beach holidays... And for thought if a bikini in the back garden...mind boggles

ICanTuckMyBoobsInMyPockets · 28/05/2015 22:21

When are you too old?

When you're dead.

Just do it.

AnyFucker · 28/05/2015 22:22

never

donemekmelarf · 28/05/2015 22:23

You can wear a bikini at any age.
But, the older you get, it's best to go for a bikini with more coverage and structure.
The top should be more bra-like.

Leave the itsy bitsy tiny, spaghetti strap type bikinis to the 18 year olds.

TisILeclerc · 28/05/2015 22:25

I am a size 16 with massive wobbly bits and a tummy full of stretch marks from four dcs. I've just spent the best part of a week in bikinis. I simply opt for vintage style ones that are cut high to the waist and that's that.

If anyone has a problem with it they've yet to tell me Wink

BastardGoDarkly · 28/05/2015 22:25

paint there's some lovely 50s style high waisted ones :)

ilovemargaretatwood8931 · 28/05/2015 22:26

Never.

I don't think anyone is ever too 'anything' to wear one though.

TisILeclerc · 28/05/2015 22:27

Oh and I'm nearly 37 so there's no way that I'll stop any time soon!

Floisme · 28/05/2015 22:28

I've worn a one piece since I was in my twenties. I had a cracking figure but just couldn't be arsed with bikinis and all the pulling and tugging and furtively checking that nothing had slipped. I've always prefered to pull on a one piece and then just forget about it.

So by all means switch if you want to but do it for positive reasons and not because of some stupid rule.

Kbear · 28/05/2015 22:29

bikini wearers unite!!

So can someone tell me where to get bikini bottoms that aren't high waisted yet sit that little bit higher up than usual? I would like a bit of support in the lower abs department!

Maraki · 28/05/2015 22:31

In Greece and Cyprus only women over 80 wear a swimming costume. Everyone else (no matter how big and fat and untoned they are) wears a bikini.

LikeABadSethRogenMovie · 28/05/2015 22:31

Never! And people that look at horror at older women in bikinis should wind their neck in and mtob!

TheUnwillingNarcheska · 28/05/2015 22:31

I wore a bikini 6 weeks after giving birth by c section in a spa Grin

Having been to Florida last year I can tell you every age and shape wore what ever beachwear they wanted.

The right style of bikini is the important bit. Bravissimo tell me I am a 32F, (can't breathe in that so settle for 34E) so no bandeau or non-wired stuff for me

Janethegirl · 28/05/2015 22:31

Just wear a bikini but if you're sensitive don't look in a mirror.
Seriously there is always someone out there that looks a damn sight worse than you could possibly do, so go for it if ghats what you want to do. At any age!!!

DayLillie · 28/05/2015 22:35

And for thought if a bikini in the back garden...mind boggles

I am increasing my vit D levels Wink but am now thinking of taking it to Greece or Cyprus Grin - it sounds like my sort of place.

OverAndAbove · 28/05/2015 22:37

Boden, Seafolly or Lepel. A big John Lewis store has the latter two. Boden is really good for coverage and engineering and you can mix and match etc

I am 46 but look better in a bikini; in a one piece I look like a sausage stuffed in a laundry bag. I don't have stretch marks but I do have wobbly bits and decent bikini knickers hold them all together
