When do you become too old to wear a bikini?

At what age do you become too old to wear a bikini n start wearing a full swimming costume.

I'm in my early 40s n have been looking for some new swimwear. Everywhere I go everything seems either tiny, too brightly coloured, not the right shape and far too young looking.

Is it time to admit defeat on the bikini front and start looking at swimming costumes?

I'm 51, and still wear bikinis. More for sunbathing and a very short walk to the pool/sea, rather than wandering around in though.

Floisme · 29/05/2015 09:28

Bikinis these days don't cause those type of problems.
Maybe but I'm not going back. I spent years trying to find a bikini that didn't slip out of place then tried on a one piece, pulled it up and there it stayed. Sorted.

CatOfTheWoods · 29/05/2015 09:28

Never. Even if you are 105, you can wear a bikini if you want to and feel good about it.

However OP what you say is you don't like the bikinis on offer which is a different issue. I agree there are lots of places where you can get more supportive and sophisticated ones – I like Boden, Seafolly has been mentioned and I once got a lovely retro one at Next, though I don't usually go for Next it was lovely and I used it for years. Toast have some lovely stuff (scroll down on that page).

Bunbaker · 29/05/2015 09:28

confused I am small chested and have two really flattering bikinis from Debenhams. They add curves where none existed. Over the last few years I have been to Italy, Greece and Croatia and very few women wear swimsuits. The ones that do are either extremely obese or very old.

CatOfTheWoods · 29/05/2015 09:29

Ooops I said "lovely" quite a lot in that post. Lovely, lovely bikinis! :)

lightgreenglass · 29/05/2015 09:31

I really don't see the point in the 50s high waisted bikinis - they really aren't that different from a swimming costume. Just a small strip of flesh on show. So you have a tiny band of tan...

Costacoffeeplease · 29/05/2015 09:34

I'm 50 in a few months, and have several bikinis, I also live abroad so they get a lot of use. I agree with the 'overstuffed sausage skin' feeling of a one piece, and find a bikini more comfortable. I think being older means caring less about what other people think too

confused79 · 29/05/2015 09:34

Duly noted bunbaker Grin

DurhamDurham · 29/05/2015 09:35

I am 44 and have always worn bikinis, they suit me better than a one piece. In a one piece I look shapeless but in a bikini I do have hips and boobs so I feel more confident.

By more confident I mean that I'll happily lie on a sunbed or quickly splash into the pool......rather than the flaunt myself all around the resort type confident Grin

PestoSwimissimos · 29/05/2015 09:36

Well, at the beginning of my outdoor swim season I wore one piece cozzies, because they felt more protective against the elements rather than anything else. But if the sun's out I swim in a bikini as it just feels nicer Smile

I am 51 and don't think my age makes a jot of difference Grin

A swimsuit won't cover up cellulite. I am slim, but with hefty thighs covered in cellulite. I eat sensibly and exercise, but can't shift the cellulite. I still wear a bikini on holiday.

AGirlCalledBoB · 29/05/2015 10:01

I don't know, I think it depends on your body rather than age. I am only 22 and won't wear a bikini. My son and pregnancy ensured I will very unlikely to wear a bikini again.

However there are some really lovely swimsuits, I have a sort of swim dress and it is really nice so you can find better things to feel comfortable and to look nice in if you look around.

Greengardenpixie · 29/05/2015 10:42

I am beginning to feel a bit odd now!!!! I havent gone abroad for many years and have bought a couple of swim dresses like agirlcalledbob has mentioned. Will i look stupid on the beach?
I have had twins and not only do i have stretch marks but my belly resembles a cushion with the belly button the button in the middle. Would people really wear a bikini with that on show??? I have had my stretch marks since i was 20!!! I would never have worn a bikini. Now i fear that i may look on on the beach with a swimsuit lol!!!!

FeijoaSundae · 29/05/2015 10:42

Never. I don't wear one, though. I'm tall and slim, but I have a less-than-perfect crepe-y tummy. I don't feel particularly glamorous with it on display. I feel way better in a black halter neck and mahoosive sunglasses.

Greengardenpixie · 29/05/2015 10:43
  • Like i may look stupid on the beach!!!
Greengardenpixie · 29/05/2015 10:43

Thank god for that feijoa!!!!

FeijoaSundae · 29/05/2015 10:44

You will not look stupid, pixie.

Nobody cares about anyone else on the beach / by the side of the pool, they only fixate on themselves. :)

Greengardenpixie · 29/05/2015 10:51

Thank you Grin was seriously beginning to wonder!!!

Pagwatch · 29/05/2015 10:51

No you won't look stupid Pixie.

People posting negatively are, more often than not, projecting their own insecurity.

If you are sitting on a beach, happy in your own skin, you tend to not give a stuff about what anyone else is doing.
The ones sitting there thinking 'she shouldn't wear a bikini/that colour/that top' are not having a good time. They are fearful they will be judged.

specialsubject · 29/05/2015 10:57

never.

although I prefer bikini top and boardshorts; they dry quickly so are far more comfortable after a swim, and also suit me better.

wear what you want. Most people aren't looking anyway!

Mellifera · 29/05/2015 10:59

Never.

I had serious confidence issues from 25-38, but since then I have been wearing bikinis again and I love them.

I have my swimsuit to swim at the gym, but it doesn't go on holiday with me.

All those who are too shy to wear a bikini, I started with tankinis, and the fabric gradually got less. I have never worn any bikinis that are basically small triangles of cloth. Most halternecks feel like they are dragging me down so I have tops that are more like a bra.
Boden do lovely bikinis/tankinis, even if the rest of the clothes are not for me.
Confidence, women!

ltk · 29/05/2015 11:04

You don't need a perfect body or a young body to wear a bikini. You just need a bikini. I love wearing bikinis and I am well past 40. You are never too old. They look fantastic and feel all summer-beachy.

pinkfrocks · 29/05/2015 11:05

Pagwatch I think you completely misunderstood my post. I didn't even mention age. I am not ageist. I said I wasn't happy showing any bits of my body that I regard as not my best. I wasn't talking about what other people choose to do, except to say that some women and men are happy to go semi naked in summer and show almost all, and some aren't.

Actually, I'd rather than go naked than have a wobbly tum hanging over my bikini bottoms.

Pagwatch · 29/05/2015 11:07

My apologies then Pinkfrocks.
