When do you become too old to wear a bikini?

MissMiss1 · 28/05/2015 21:49

At what age do you become too old to wear a bikini n start wearing a full swimming costume.

I'm in my early 40s n have been looking for some new swimwear. Everywhere I go everything seems either tiny, too brightly coloured, not the right shape and far too young looking.

Is it time to admit defeat on the bikini front and start looking at swimming costumes?

When you are dead.

Wear what suits you and what makes you feel good.

GreenShadow · 29/05/2015 17:08

What Roussette said.

Yes, abroad you stand out in a one-piece. In a bikini you don't - (almost) whatever size and shape you are.

I'm 53 and in my 20s would have thrown my hands up in horror at the thought of wearing one at that age but now, it still feels 'right'

SqueezyCheeseWeasel · 29/05/2015 17:13

I wear a maillot style swimming costume, I just prefer the style and fit and feel more comfortable in them.

Fromparistoberlin73 · 29/05/2015 17:16

brown fat is good fat, get a spray tan

that said, my abdoman is so huge (not fat I hasten to add) I got a lovely costume the other day

try Brastop, basically go online OP

SqueezyCheeseWeasel · 29/05/2015 17:17

Fwiw, it isn't a body shame thing, I'm happy enough with my body shape. I just think the cut is better on me and I'm not keen on being nearly naked in public.

pinkfrocks · 29/05/2015 17:22

I don't think it's advisable to follow blindly our lady friends on the continent as to how they dress at the seaside. It's not as if they are all style gurus. If they want to look unsightly in bikinis with crepey flesh and rolls of fat, that's up to them. There are such things as standards, darlings.

Roussette · 29/05/2015 17:30

Hi Goose. It was Next. They are v good for bikinis as they do cup sizes A, B C, D, DD etc and you buy top and bottom seperately and they are not expensive Smile

SugarFinney · 29/05/2015 17:33

I am 48 and quite slim, I have always been happy wearing a bikini. Last year I got a really nice swimming costume and felt great wearing that plus no risk of burnt tummy etc. But - we went on holiday to Slovenia and I felt totally out of place and conspicuous in a one piece as every other female over the age of 5 was wearing a bikini, regardless of body shape. I had never actually noticed before that no-one in Europe wears a swimsuit.

squizita · 29/05/2015 17:35

Pag YY to everything you've said really.

And furthermore although many of my 30+ fellow mums fit into mainstream ideas of size/shape matching bikinis, those of us who have lost the stretch mark lotto should be free to enjoy a 2 piece as much. Smile

Roussette · 29/05/2015 17:35

Disagree pinkfrocks Smile. I like it that women embrace their size and don't feel obliged to cover up and hide. Good for them I say.

There was a woman on the beach when I was on holiday last year. She was size 20 plus I would say. She had on a bikini that was a perfect fit and just the right style for her size. Good on her. I admire women who have balls not literally of course

Floisme · 29/05/2015 17:36

no-one in Europe wears a swimsuit.
I did - a couple of years ago. I looked vair elegant too and not at all like a beach ball Smile

Frostycake · 29/05/2015 17:42

I think as others have said, it depends on your figure.

When I was in California, I saw some amazing fifty-plus women in bikinis on the beach with stunning figures - really stunning (toned, tanned, slim, no stretch marks etc.)

I do think though that generally speaking, the older you get, the more support you need in both the top (structured cups and supporting straps/band) and bottoms (bum coverage and tummy holding-in materials).

I last wore a bikini at 44 but I had dieted and exercised like a woman possessed in order to look good in it.

hippospot · 29/05/2015 17:48

I will wear a bikini forever because no manufacturer as yet has made a one-piece that fits me :)

(very long body and poor DD aged 7 already has the same problem)

limitedperiodonly · 29/05/2015 17:55

The only time I notice other women on the beach is if they look like goddesses (rare) or are women furtively going down to the sea for a paddle in a black M&S sarong.

They are invariably English and think their bodies are shit and everyone is staring at them. Wrong on both counts.

I admit DH and I did once spend a fortnight giggling at a woman but that was because she kept walking about in a bikini, mirrored sunglasses, a frayed straw cowboy hat and Frye boots in Ibiza in August.

Talk about trying too hard. She was English too. But not Meg Mathews.

I bet it took her DH ages to get those fucking boots off at the end of the day.

limitedperiodonly · 29/05/2015 17:57

Oh, and she had pigtails too.

Maybe it was Meg Mathews...

VivaLeBeaver · 29/05/2015 17:58

18!

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 29/05/2015 18:11

I just like swimsuits. I don't want to be conspicuous and it actually bothers me that other women might think I'm sticking out because I'm not in a bikini. Why can't we (and it's only women I'm referring to!) just support each other, whatever we're wearing on the beach and just give that excellentHmmstare to anybody who makes comments about us?

Or is it just because some women simply cannot stop themselves from judging other women? Angry

I've never, ever seen mens' heads swivel around as another man walks by, nor heard comments about whether the shorts suit him or not... that seems to be the ridiculous province of small-minded and smaller-brained women. It's very annoying. I get enough male eyes glued to my breasts as it is, I don't want to have to contend with womens' judgemental comments as well. Just stop it.

Phalenopsis · 29/05/2015 18:16

I've never worn a bikini as an adult and I'm slim and in my 30s.

My mum on the other hand is 69, about four stone overweight and wears one. She couldn't give a shiny shit what anyone thinks.

I suggest that the OP does exactly as she wants.

PurpleSwift · 29/05/2015 18:19

I'm young. I'm neither toned or slim and I wear a bikini. I'm on holiday atm and I've seen very few people in a full costume tbh, plenty in their 70's still in a bikini.

Pagwatch · 29/05/2015 18:21

Hippospot

For a very short time Sweaty Betty used to make swimsuits for long bodies.
I've never been able to find them since so have given up.

I'm hoping DD isn't like me - she's 12 and a competitive swimmer.
I know she has a longish body too so wears a slightly bigger size to give her the length.
I hope she's not like me as an adult
It's a pain.

Floisme · 29/05/2015 18:23

I'm with Lying. Please be careful with the assumptions, people. Some of us just prefer swimsuits. The end.

But I'm all for women wearing whatever makes them happy.

TalkinPeace · 29/05/2015 18:32

I prefer swimming in a bikini (1 mile 4 times a week, full pelt, outdoors)
but they have to be well cut and fitted.
My stretch marks are much less visible under my permatan
and I do get a real tan because I dislike being Vit D deficient.

limitedperiodonly · 29/05/2015 18:36

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe I don't notice anyone unless someone is drawing attention to themselves by being devastatingly beautiful or with odd behaviour.

That could just as easily be men imagining they are Rafa Nadal while playing beach tennis too close to me, perverts in sunglasses on tit patrol or people seeking to steal bags while their owners are in the sea.

I don't think most people are staring at women in swimsuits or sarongs because they are hateful. It's just that sometimes their awkward behaviour draws the eye.

Never mind. I close my eyes or go back to my book.

With the exception of Frye Boot Woman and Running Backwards Man. He runs backwards on the shoreline at Salinas in Ibiza and expects everyone to get out of his way.

In August. When it's like Oxford Street on a Saturday afternoon in the sales.

Attention-seeking loon.

Otherwise people are really not that interesting to me or I guess to anyone else, male or female.

gooseflannel · 29/05/2015 18:41

Thanks Roussette
Off to look at Next

Bakeoffcake · 29/05/2015 18:42

That's hilarious limited. I'd be on the beach every day, just to watch Running Backwards Man.
