When do you become too old to wear a bikini?

At what age do you become too old to wear a bikini n start wearing a full swimming costume.

I'm in my early 40s n have been looking for some new swimwear. Everywhere I go everything seems either tiny, too brightly coloured, not the right shape and far too young looking.

Is it time to admit defeat on the bikini front and start looking at swimming costumes?

Your never to old to put a bikini on your body. All shapes and sizes on the beaches every year. As for the style or colour if you like it buy it. I like Freya ones these days but the top in your correct bra size and they look fabulous. Brought all mine from eBay at a fraction of high street prices all brand new with tags. Happy shopping

TalkinPeace · 29/05/2015 15:05

I wear a bikini every day for swimming. I am 50.
Many of my gym friends are much older and larger : but if you are toned its cool
and if you are not, who (other than the Daily Fail) actually gives a shit?

catswag · 29/05/2015 15:06

after pregnancy is the time for one pieces really
nothing to do with age

Pagwatch · 29/05/2015 15:07

No it isn't.

That's guff.

Floisme · 29/05/2015 15:07

DinosaursRoar I go to Bravissimo for bras and I realise that bikini fittings may have improved since I last tried one (it was many years ago). I'm still not interested in going back.

To clarify, I only ever wear a swimsuit for swimming. I don't sunbathe and if I'm on a beach or by a pool (which is rare) I'm always covered up - not because of my age or body but because I don't like the sun.

DinosaursRoar · 29/05/2015 15:16

catswag - why? I didn't get stretch marks (not all woman do, and not all agree that they are so ugly they have to be covered, I tend to think they just make you look like you've had DCs, which having a small person in the pool with you will also show the same thing) and now DC2 is nearly 2, I'm back to only about half a dress size bigger than I was when I had her, why wouldn't I wear a bikini if I would before?

Floisme · 29/05/2015 15:19

DinosaursRoar I meant to say thanks for the advice and I hope I didn't sound snarky. I totally agree that women should wear what they want.

DinosaursRoar · 29/05/2015 15:31

That's alright Floisme - it annoys the hell out of me so many shops sell bras properly with back and cup fittings, but bikinis just by dress size! Even worse though is all the one-pieces with no cups or support at all (again sold by dress size!).

I tend to put on swimwear for the day then throw big kaftan affair/shorts and tee over the top for beach days where the mini-dinosaurs have me running in and out of the water, so my swimwear's got to be able to function as underwear as well. I wouldn't tolerate bra and pants that had to be rearranged regularly, not doing that on the beach either.

catswag · 29/05/2015 15:32

of course there are exceptions to the rule
but in general it looks better

i myself will be wearing a bikini, even after having three children, because I prefer being able to go to the toilet easier and I prefer drying quicker after a swim

so I think they are more practical
I have just got a Freya one
and a janet regar one

Pagwatch · 29/05/2015 15:36

It's not 'exceptions to the rule'

A huge chunk of women I know look great after their children's births. A sizeable number look great now their children, like mine, are teenagers.

Suggesting that women immediately lose their figure after childbirth is about 40 years out of date.

Plus, even if they didn't look great why shouldn't they wear a bikini if it's comfortable.

There are some seriously crappy thought processes on this thread. Is it 1950?

Lilylonglegs · 29/05/2015 16:04

As long as my stomach isn't hanging over the bottoms... Imma wear a bikini forever. I think it also depends on where you are wearing it. I've been to places where even most young people aren't wearing them and others where people 70+ and obese people are wearing thing ones.

Greengardenpixie · 29/05/2015 16:16

Quite a sad post that people did this to her. How awful she must have felt.

FrugalFashionista · 29/05/2015 16:19

In Italy, never. Here you can and will wear a bikini at 85. I find it wonderfully liberating that everyone can enjoy the sun. I'm 42 and haven't worn an one-piece in the past ten years. I spent my pregnancies in a bikini too Wink

fredabear · 29/05/2015 16:22

At nearly 45 with 11yo twins I love my bikinis, have just worn swimsuits for a couple of days and hated them, all cold, wet and inconvenient! No one should think they can't wear bikinis.

DayLillie · 29/05/2015 16:36

As long as my stomach isn't hanging over the bottoms...

Mine does Grin

foxinsocks · 29/05/2015 16:42

so does mine Grin

I sometimes feel the need to pick it up on its own

Bunbaker · 29/05/2015 16:47

" it annoys the hell out of me so many shops sell bras properly with back and cup fittings, but bikinis just by dress size!"

Debenhams and M and S sell them by bra size, and sell the tops and bottoms separately. Quite a few places do that now. You must be looking in the wrong shops.

cressetmama · 29/05/2015 16:54

Go to Brazil; nobody ever wears a one-piece, no matter what size! And Brazilian bikins do not come in modest, or so I am reliably informed.

Roussette · 29/05/2015 16:57

I only wear a speedo swimsuit in the pool at the gym and always wear bikinis and I'm over 60 and a bog standard size 14. I feel like a big round beach ball in a swimsuit on the beach and it's all sweaty on my stomach and i get tiny heat water blisters, ghastly.

In the Med the only swimsuits you see are on ancient europeans or Brits! I feel far more attractive in a bikini. However, the bra top has to be underwired without fail, as I have droopy tits and I need holding up, and the bottoms can't be string on the sides, as a PP said the ones that fold down are most flattering and sort of hold me in.

I've just bought this one last week, just my sorta bikini Grin

When do you become too old to wear a bikini?
Floisme · 29/05/2015 17:01

Slight derail but don't most of you cover up in the sun anyway?

Roussette · 29/05/2015 17:02

No. I wear suncream. I sit in the shade when I'm hot and depending on the temperature, that's most of the time. I don't cover up. I love the beach, and the sea and like to feel liberated and free of clothes Grin

Pagwatch · 29/05/2015 17:05

Not when I'm swimming. Or when it's really hot. Cover ups stick to you.

Big umbrella /shade, bikini, swim, shade, swim, shade lunch with coverup..

gooseflannel · 29/05/2015 17:05

That is gorgeous Rousette, where is it from if you don't mind me asking?

DayLillie · 29/05/2015 17:06

I used to be covered up, but I am now a born again sunbather - had low vit d levels (but only 20mins at a time)
