When do you become too old to wear a bikini?

At what age do you become too old to wear a bikini n start wearing a full swimming costume.

I'm in my early 40s n have been looking for some new swimwear. Everywhere I go everything seems either tiny, too brightly coloured, not the right shape and far too young looking.

Is it time to admit defeat on the bikini front and start looking at swimming costumes?

I'm 49 and wear a bikini. Why shouldn't I?Confused

Bakeoffcake · 28/05/2015 22:41

Agree that you do need a well fitted bikini, especially if your large of norkage. Figleaves are really good as you can buy tops and bottoms separately. I'm 30FF so need a good bit of scaffolding!

thenightsky · 28/05/2015 22:43

I didn't even start wearing bikinis until I was in my 40s! This was due to having big norks and no tops would fit. When I hit mid-40s shops started selling bra sized bikini tops, so I started wearing them (34DD).

Best place ever for decent bikinis for the older and larger of nork is Debenhams. Their Gorgeous range and Mantaray range go up to E cups and they often have a couple of different bottom styles to chose from (shorts, tie-sides, high waists etc) I do find I need to size up a cup though, so tend to go for 34E.

Oh and I'm now 56 and just bought a new one yesterday Smile

PUGaLUGS · 28/05/2015 22:44

I am 50 in Aug and still plan on wearing bikinis for a good few years yet.

BestIsWest · 28/05/2015 22:45

Age has nothing to do with it.

TheWordFactory · 28/05/2015 23:00

I still wear one - 47.

I am hour glass so wear a halter neck top. My boobs are great and the top draws all the attention! The arse is round but nicely firm Wink.

I don't have any strecth marks (lord knows how as I have twins) but if I did I think I'd still wear a bikini. Who is looking?

TheWordFactory · 28/05/2015 23:08

This is super flattering www.debenhams.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/prod_10701_10001_064020462594_-1

HowlyBabblyBansheeeeeee · 28/05/2015 23:09

Well I still wear a bikini on the beach, the only difference now is that I wear a sarong if I'm going for a stroll along the waters edge.

I find a one piece just too hot and besides, I like being tanned.

I'm 63. Shock

lurkingaround · 28/05/2015 23:09

I am hurtling towards 50 and am this very week on hols. I think I've seen 1 woman in a one-piece, and tbh it was noticeable and remarkable because it was the only one-piece. Instead of hiding her, it highlighted her. Everyone else was unnoticeable in a bikini. I'm far from perfect but have no intention of one-pieceing it for a long time yet.

ChablisChic · 29/05/2015 07:05

And what does it matter what other holiday makers think? You'll never see them again.

Bonsoir · 29/05/2015 07:13

I love one piece swimming costumes, especially when they are Eres ones. Super flattering, super comfortable. I'm not a sunbather, however - I completely understand that people who want an all over deep tan and want to lie in direct sunshine for hours at a time want to wear as little as possible.

I would rather swim naked!

TheEggityOddity · 29/05/2015 07:23

People are so obsessed about their own bodies while semi naked that they really won't mind yours. Its never as bad once you are on the beach versus an unforgiving changing room!

pinkfrocks · 29/05/2015 07:26

I always find these kind of posts enlightening, in an odd way!

There are 2 groups of people I reckon when it comes to fashion and looks: those who don't give a shit what anyone thinks of their less-than-perfect- bits, and those who do.

I'm in the latter group and won't inflict the bits of my body I don't like on anyone else's eyes. Judge me if you wish!

If you don't care about your wobbly bits being on show, go for it. If you do, wear a one piece. In general I think one pieces are more flattering for women who are not toned around the middle but that's my personal preference.

TheWordFactory · 29/05/2015 08:29

Spurred by this thread, I looked around and found this nice one www.johnlewis.com/seafolly-goddess-halter-bikini-top-capri/p847060

And this one www.houseoffraser.co.uk/null+Kefalona+Range/KefalonaRange_Purple,default,pd.html

Both will give great cleavage and feel less skimpy on the bottom.

Pagwatch · 29/05/2015 08:48

Pinkfrocks

But that's bollocks. My midrif is very toned. I don't know why - just my body I guess. So I'm not displaying any more 'wobbly bits' than in a swimsuit.
Women's bodies are different and that is not entirely determined by age.
My body is long - in my whole life I have found about three costumes which don't cut me in half.

So it's nothing to do with flesh displayed. Why should I be uncomfortable because I'm getting older?

HolgerDanske · 29/05/2015 08:54

You don't.

mrsdavidbowie · 29/05/2015 09:01

I wore a bikini for the first time at 51. My h at the time had always been very disparaging about my body...I am six feet tall, eleven and a half stone and size 14.

Helen Mirren inspired me.
I felt fantastic.

leccybill · 29/05/2015 09:02

I'm 35 and I wear a bikini. So does my mum and she's 58. We are both slightly flabby size 10.

I get a sweaty stomach in a one piece in the 40 degree heat.

BooRadders · 29/05/2015 09:05

I guess it also depends on where you are planning to wear it.
The first time we went to South France after having the DC , I took a costume and bikini. I wore the costume on day 1 as I felt embarrassed by my wobbly stomach. Once there I felt conspicuous on the beach.....nearly all women of all ages in bikinis. The women were all shapes...Some were slim and toned, others elderly barrel shaped ladies. I wore a bikini for the rest of the holiday!

AmelieinOz · 29/05/2015 09:08

Well Paulina Porizkova just posted a picture of herself in a bikini at 50.

Bunbaker · 29/05/2015 09:13

"just couldn't be arsed with bikinis and all the pulling and tugging and furtively checking that nothing had slipped."

Bikinis these days don't cause those type of problems. They are far more practical when you need the loo as well.

I agree that Debenhams has a fantastic beachwear range. M and S have quite a lot as well. They both sell tops and bottoms separately and by bra size.

Off to do some sit ups and squats now Grin

yakari · 29/05/2015 09:14

I can recommend Just Peachy from Figleaves. I live abroad and so practically live in swimwear at the weekends. I'm a twelve reasonably toned but had a pot belly all my life, and 2 kids didn't help!

I find the 50's style actually makes my belly look bigger, for me the best options are mid rise ones and particularly those that fold down like this style

Just got these ones and they are incredibly comfortable runched sides

Anyway it just means I get to buy bikinis AND beachwear - hurrah for more shopping

Roseformeplease · 29/05/2015 09:15

I will not be wearing one in my coffin. Until then, no problem!

confused79 · 29/05/2015 09:20

Are swimming costumes too old then ? I'm 25 and need something for the summer holidays , and have noticed Asda do some in a lovely floral. I prefer costumes as even though I'm slim I'm very small chested and bikinis don't really look right on me (I'm athletic build ) .

MidLifeMakeover · 29/05/2015 09:22

I'm 38 and I've never worn a bikini in my life - I wish I had the confidence to.
