Excessive body hair is making me miserable

Please don't tell me I shouldn't be ashamed; I'm not ashamed but I'm fed up.

My legs are like desperate dans. I shaved them yesterday and already they are stubbly. They look like most women's do after a WEEK. Even my legs and toes are hairy Hmm

My eyebrows are okay and can be waxed / threaded but I'm noting an increasing amount on my face including long wiry ones growing from my neck and chin. I pluck three when I see them.

My pubic area is ridiculous. I have pubic hair growing halfway down my thighs and hair removal cream burns me and more pertinently doesn't work. I am utterly fed up.

I don't have pcos or similar. I come from a hairy family. On the plus side I do have beautifully thick swishy head-hair and so do my children. Unfortunately when born they look like baby monkeys. My nearly-1 year old already has a mono brow Hmm

HELP!

I read the description and itsays it doesn't, Agent.

changeshow · 29/03/2015 17:50

I have Boots version of the lumea, it's lasted at least six years and both my sister and I have used it a fair bit. It's really great. I would recommend.

defineme · 29/03/2015 17:53

I am having laser treatment at a clinic. 6 sessions via groupon cost me £60 but it would normally be 3 times as much. Beautician reckons 6 15 min treatments will get rid of all my facial hair...which was the case for similarly beardy friend who had it done at same clinic last year-not a whisker since. Hurts far less than waxing, but burning smell disconcerting!

BravingSpring · 29/03/2015 17:57

Has anyone tried a NoNo?

AgentProvocateur · 29/03/2015 18:00

Thanks, toysrluv Sad

Kundry · 29/03/2015 18:00

Beautician is lying if she says it will get rid of all your facial hair - Laser and IPL do hair reduction but not a permanent removal which a reputable clinic will tell you before you start.

I fund my facial hair got finer and thinned out a bit but kept coming back - nurse in my clinic suggested I stopped as the fine hair wouldn't be caught by the laser. She also said facial hair is the most difficult to treat - which has been my experience too as I now just have a v few leg and underarm hairs which take seconds to shave off. It does need top ups about once a year though - again, not permanent

FrankSpencer · 29/03/2015 18:01

Doesnt IPL hurt with each blast? I tried the TRIA and I couldn't go though with it. Horrible needle like pain over each follicle, it's worse than plucking the area. What does the Lumea feel like?

barbidou · 29/03/2015 18:04

I'm in the same boat - very pale Irish skin, lovely thick hair on my head, but sadly thick dark hair on my legs / thighs and pubic area. If I let the hair grow for a good few days or a week, I can achieve quite a smooth shave which will last, oooh, all of 24 hours. Shaving any more frequently makes me bleed and causes red spots.

Finally realised how much it was affecting my confidence - have lovely skirts and dresses I never wear, even affects my sex life (TMI?) as I always feel stubbly and uncomfortable.

Bought a Philips Lumea a couple of weeks ago and used it twice. I really hope I see some results - too early for me to recommend it to you yet but wanted to sympathise!

Bluejumperandbluejeans · 29/03/2015 18:45

I'm another hairy type. I've fair skin dark thick hair and plenty of it. I've an Irish mother and she is the same. My dad was quite hairy too
I can't wax as I'm allergic to the beeswax and end up with an awful red spotty rash, I can't use an epilator as my skin is sensitive and again I get a rash and pain. I shave my legs and tidy things up but that's it.
I used to get embarrassed by my hairiness and I remember my pe teacher at school commenting on my hairy legs and inner thighs once and telling me I should shave it off. I'm used to it now and despite the national obsession with being smooth skinned and getting rid off every little wisp of hair on our bodies I'm happy with the way I am and I refuse to feel embarrassed or that I need to hide it - it's me, its part of who I am and my Irish heritage

PilchardsonToast · 29/03/2015 18:57

Another vote for home ipl except I've got a braun Venus naked skin and it's utterly brilliant. I'm really pale with think dark hair, I've been using it since Xmas every two weeks but monthly more recently and the difference is huge. Still a bit stubbly to touch but to look I'm practically hair free.

I had toyed with purchasing a home ipl for years but I'm so glad I did, it's so worth it!

FrankSpencer · 29/03/2015 18:59

And what does the IPL feel like to use?

yumyumpoppycat · 29/03/2015 19:02

Are there any side effects to perm removing under arm hair, this is the main area that bother me as it never looks cleanly shaven (irish with dark hair again!). I used to be really bothered by hair in the bottom of my back and mistakenly thought I was some kind of weirdly hairy person as a teen, I had it removed with some kind of laser. I think it helped a bit. My hairiness on places like tummy, back and feet seems to have reduced after having 3 children and getting older. I am not that bothered what my dp thinks about my excess hair, he would prefer me to remove it but puts up with it!

barbidou · 29/03/2015 19:17

I get next to no discomfort with the Lumea on the highest setting - feels warm but that's about it. Only exception is if I go over a freckle accidentally, then I get a pin prick feeling and know what I've done!

Aridane · 29/03/2015 20:21

Thanks all for the PhilipsLUmea info. I am very tempted. Just wonder though whether to get the SC2006 one discussed on the thread, which retails for c.£300 at Argos and on Amazon, or the newer SC2008 one which has a separate / stronger bikini line attachment (as well as face and body) and which is more expensive

Itscurtainsforyou · 29/03/2015 22:20

So is the Phillips lumea a laser treatment? I had laser on my bikini line about 10 years ago. It had some effect but when I stopped taking the pill it all grew back Hmm

scotswoman · 29/03/2015 22:59

Agent in the booklet it says it works on dark blonde hair but NOT light blonde

niceacorns philips say
• The appliance is not intended for children younger than 15 years.
• Teenagers aged between 15 and 18 years can use the appliance
with the consent and/or assistance of their parents or the persons who have parental authority over them.
• Adults from 19 years and older can use the appliance freely.

Barbidou I use a white eyeliner and dot it over any freckles to prevent this.

I use setting 5 and can feel some heat but it's not sore at all.

Curtains it's ipl which is pulses of light, not laser. When I was researching it pointed to laser being better but to do all areas I wanted it would have been so expensive so I decided to risk the lumea being a waste of money against the hope I'd get results. I knew I could then do it at home in my own time and easily do top ups when needed. My hair was thick and dark and my legs were stubbly within hours of shaving so I thought even if I got some improvement I'd be happy. I can't say enough how happy I am with the results already.

Aridane I have the sc2006 and after 2nd session had pretty much no regrowth on my bikini line at the end of the 2 weeks. Obviously everyone is different but based on my experience I wouldn't spend more for the 2008

VeryStressedMum · 29/03/2015 23:12

I am exactly like this. ..except my eyebrows are a bit sparse I have to fill them in but bloody thick dark hair everywhere else Confused I can't really shave as after a day or two the itching is unbearable. Luckily dcs didn't inherit it.

FrankSpencer · 29/03/2015 23:41

Thank you. It's suitable only for pale skin? I'm a light tan colour tone. I'll be off to google when I can

BravingSpring · 30/03/2015 07:32

Just ordered one from argos the sc2006, it's 1/3 off at £299.99.

meglet · 30/03/2015 07:39

itscurtains yy, I had repeat electrolysis on a couple of areas. The hair eventually grew back.

A lumea doesn't look like such a reckless purchase when I weigh it up against a couple of years of waxing. at least I could do it in my bathroom instead of trying to fit in appointments.

ROARmeow · 30/03/2015 08:19

There's a handy chart on the Boots site which gives product info.

Which Lumea is best for me?

violetbunny · 30/03/2015 08:24

Some contraceptive pills can help... Try speaking to your GP

Cocodale · 30/03/2015 08:32

I'm having laser treatment for facial, chest and tummy hair Im very hairy!
I tackle bikini line and upper legs with waxing and its definitely thinned, not brave enough to have lower legs waxed so shave and yep I shave my toes. Sometimes I think I'm hairier than my husband. Try not to get disheartened there's plenty that can be done x

FrankSpencer · 30/03/2015 12:15

Bit conflicting. The advice is if you have a parent or grandparent of Black origin, do not use IPL even if the skin tone is fair.
Going buy the charts, all would say my tone is suitable for treatment as I sit between Beige and Light Tan - my dad is Black, mum is Scottish white. Hmmmmm.

FrankSpencer · 30/03/2015 12:17

I sit bang in the middle of the second and third tone.
