I succumbed to the marksies 70s flare following a thread on here baaa baa baa. I now have them, tried them on, and convinced they look good. BUT the proportions are so different to anything else I have. So how do you get wearing flares right ?

I'm thinking:

  • always wear heels ( I'm 5 ft 2 so that's a given)
  • tops need to be fitted/cropped ( and def not the volume stuff you'd wear over skinnies)

Any other rules or ideas? Belts? Silk blouse? Coats, so they have to be short?

Pinterest links gratefully received!

I also followed like a sheep. However I love them. I do wear them with heels but I find lots of my regular tops are fine as long as they are not too slouchy.

I have been wearing them with fitted sweatshirts and a v cool handbag.

I have had plenty of compliments. I feel a bit liberated from the skinny but still love my boyfriend jeans.

temperamentalamongcorvids · 17/03/2015 21:56

I ordered my M&s flares today only to receive an email at lunchtime to say they're out of stock. Grrrr. I want them.

oigetoffmycheese · 17/03/2015 22:01

Well I bought 2 pairs to try diff sizes and just returned a pair today so you never know.

MartinRohdesBellybuttonFluff · 17/03/2015 22:06

I am sorry but I will have to be a black sheep and opt out of this worthy group!

You are a brave lady as are all the other dedicated followers of fashion Grin

Thank you Cheese, I'd forgotten about a sweatshirt I have which should work. Any ideas on coats?

OP posts:
princessdave · 18/03/2015 14:31

I've worn mine with short jackets (mostly) and also my longer red Mac (someone said it made me look taller, win!)
Tucked my blouse in today under a shorter gold-yellow jacket as it's sunny. Try the coats you have and report back on what works!

oigetoffmycheese · 18/03/2015 15:23

Jackets/coats are hard. So far I have only worn them on the 2 warmer days. So no coat

101handbags · 18/03/2015 16:07

Love them. I have these: www.next.co.uk/g3076s3#958438g30 in both colours & they are fab. I have the 10L - I am 5'8" and they are too long without heels but perfect with a 2 or 3" wedge, almost down to the floor. I'm wearing mine with a t-shirt & a trench coat. And trying not to trip over. I am as surprised as anyone that Next has made a pair of decent jeans, the jeans from there have been terrible quality lately.

Leo35 · 18/03/2015 16:38

My name is Leo and I love flared trousers. And as I was a teenager in the 80s when they were deeply unfashionable, those are words I never expected to type!

Love flared jeans and, if I may be permitted to widen the Group remit, wide-leg jeans. Already got a pair of flared ones (whispers) by Boden, and deffo after another pair.

My reading of the John Lewis freebie mag (I know where to get my fashion knowledge) tells me that this summer is all about the 70s and denim. Short jackets seem to be the way to go with flares in my experience. Think it's worth trying on lots of tops and t-shirts with them and seeing what works.

itsnothingoriginal · 18/03/2015 17:06

Love the Next jeans but I need petites as they would be far too long on me even in regular fit. Apparently us titchy people can only wear skinny or bootcut jeans Sad

I love the new flares - and am sooooo happy to see the end of skinnies at last (well I'm sure they'll be around for a while yet but at least there is an alternative Grin)

noddyholder · 18/03/2015 17:31

I never stopped wearing them buut Dp says I am a leftover from the70s anyway I just look like that! Always heels unless v tall good fit and I like with glam tops and hippyish cotton blouses In summer wedges and clogs with little cheesecloth tops and big glasses

squoosh · 18/03/2015 17:50

Make sure they aren't too long otherwise you'll look weirdly footless like poor Olivia here.

squoosh · 18/03/2015 17:51

Actually she looks a bit like she has the hooves of a shire horse.

Leo35 · 18/03/2015 17:55

HAha! Love the photo. Yep those flares needed altering. BTW - who is she?

squoosh · 18/03/2015 17:59

Olivia Palermo. Socialite and official Beautiful Person whose life seems to consist of attending fashion shows and looking a bit haughty.

bialystockandbloom · 18/03/2015 18:06

I'm another who's never really stopped wearing this style, ever. Had skinnies, but god they don't suit anyone imo.

noddy I love that look too. Just need a floppy hat, and you could look like the cover of those 70s pattern books my mum had if anyone remembers those

Have been working the Swedish Hasbeens boots over winter, now ready to get the sandals out.

Not sure about cropped tops if they're going to show flesh (unless you're 17), but definitely look better with fitted styles than loose.

I think either knee-length coats, or waist-length fitted jackets look best (as long as there's a bit of top showing underneath at the bottom of the jacket).

Think blouses look great, esp if tucked in.

bialystockandbloom · 18/03/2015 18:09

Fitted blazers look good too.

Stokey · 18/03/2015 18:45

I actually love this look with a baggy jumper.

And this is when not to wear flares ....

ClaraDeLaNoche · 18/03/2015 18:57

I've got a spare size 10 ref length if they are any good to the person who didn't get them? Am keeping the long length. Need fairly high wedges so waiting till the dry weather or night out in a taxi. Yes to tucked in blouse. Also VB looks fab in hers with a plain grey tee.

ClaraDeLaNoche · 18/03/2015 19:17

Like this. www.redcarpet-fashionawards.com/2013/04/22/victoria-beckham-lovesflared-jeans/ although this was two years ago so she's prob back to skinnies if they are fashionable in 2017.

No to breton tops unless you are going to a nautical themed party.

Leo35 · 18/03/2015 19:23

Aah Olivia Palermo... Has she actually 'done' anything? Other than wear pale beige trews at an ill-advised length (they do look like animal costume feet don't they?)? Love the rainy day flare-wearer, you can see the denim soaking up the rain in the photo.

Leo35 · 18/03/2015 19:23

There again it's probably my varifocals deceiving me!

TheCowThatLaughs · 18/03/2015 19:34

I've started collecting pictures of flares successfully worn with flats to try and convince myself it can be done. I hate wearing heels.

PilchardPrincess · 18/03/2015 19:38

I've worn flares for the last 25 years Grin

Looking forward to being able to stock up, to see me through the lean decade or so that will come after this revival....

squoosh · 18/03/2015 19:39

Hmmm, I'm not convinced flares work with flats. Because they're not hanging as they do when worn with heels they kind of flatten out against the calf.
