Ashamed of my beauty product hoard!

IPokeBadgers · 01/03/2015 15:04

I have spent some time this morning trying to sort and tidy my beauty and toiletries cupboard and I am actually feeling veryShock andBlush at the sheer volume of stuff that I have, much of it lovely and expensive and unopened!

I reckon it could take me a couple of years to get through it all!

Buying make up as well as lovely bath and shower stuff seems to have become my go to/default pick me up when I want to impulse buy...... but seeing the hoard has brought me down.

anyone else like this and are there any threads that would encourage me to stop buying stuff and use all the lovely products that I have?

please tell me I am not the only person like this?

Two big empties for me today, a 400ml Gatineau tan accelerator and a double size Rodial face oil, both nice but won't be re-purchasing just yet as I have lots of serums to use up and it's not worth getting a new tan accelerator until next spring now. I opened it at the beginning of last summer but stopped using it over the winter so it lasted well for about £35-40, leaves my arms feeling very soft and smooth too

Eliza22 · 16/06/2015 19:30

Costa, does the tan accelerater work? Am off to Italy soon. It's HOT and I'm milk bottle white.

Costacoffeeplease · 16/06/2015 19:34

I think it does - I'm naturally quite pale and freckly, but don't burn when I use it, even though I live in the algarve! I don't really sunbathe, but can't avoid the sun just being around the garden/pool/walking the dogs/hanging out washing - and I've got a nice colour on my arms - under my freckles!

Eliza22 · 16/06/2015 19:46

Thanks. May try some.

jjwhite · 17/06/2015 13:44

FrugalFashionista yeah it definitely looks like it's closed :-( I might have a google around and see if there are any another Korean beauty shops in Paris. Like you say - it seems there are more out here than in the UK!

A couple more empties:

Aussie shampoo/conditioner Miracle Moist minis - really, really liked these! Much better than the more expensive Redkin, Loreal Mythic Oil ones I've been using recently. When I've finished my current shampoo/conditioner I will purchase the full sizes of these. They cleaned my hair effectively and were moisturising also. My hair seems less dry and frizzy but not weighed down - v. impressed!

Diptyque Lilas Candle - I actually really didn't like this - it has a balmy, soapy smell to it that was quite sickening and by the end I just wanted rid of it (which is not how you should be feeling about a £40 candle!) Won't repurchase and wouldn't recommend.

Annarose2014 · 17/06/2015 15:02

Finally finished my Bobbi Brown Corrector. This went on and on and on and I've disliked it almost from the start so it was hard going. It covers dark circles well BUT if you have even the faintest line uncer your eyes this stuff will find them. Its tacky, and it should be a lot more emollient. So would not repurchase.

Was all set to pick up another pink undereye corrector and then found one in an old Wet n Wild concealer quad at the back of a drawer that I'm going to use instead. Yay me being economical!

ememem84 · 17/06/2015 15:27

Went out riding today. Full face on. Serious pan has been hit on a face powder. And I think I'm almost done a clarins highlighter pen thingy. Yay!

mowglik · 17/06/2015 23:50

Few empties from me:

Victoria's Secret body oil in jasmine and water lily. DH bought this for me 3! years ago from a U.S. trip and only just managed to finish it now. It was smelling a bit 'different' though, not sure if it was just me or if it had started to go off Hmm sad to finish it though I used it a lot in the year before my ds was born so nice memories of our cosy flat pre-dc evoked when I use it. May repurchase in future for a trip down memory lane

Couple of samples of skinfood toners and essences - Korean skincare samples - very light but nourishing, am starting to realise watery moisture is the way to go for my oily skin. Will purchase full size of the lettuce essence

legohurtswhenyoustandonit · 18/06/2015 10:30

One empty for me - a superdrug vitamin e body scrub. Quite nice and may repurchase in the future.

woodhill · 18/06/2015 19:05

used up a couple of tiny shampoos and a conditioner today

legohurtswhenyoustandonit · 20/06/2015 10:33

Another empty - Arran Aromatics body lotion called After the Rain. I really liked this. I received it as a gift and would consider repurchasing. I have another body lotion waiting to be opened tomorrow morning.

I seem to be on a roll at the moment as lots of full size products are just about empty. Will post again in a day or two. It is nice to rediscover products that have been sitting in the cupboard for a while rather than just buying new ones. And I am creating space in an overfull house too.

FrugalFashionista · 20/06/2015 13:32

Have just finished a full-size jar of Lily Lolo mineral foundation in China Doll!

Mineral foundation is really great for my skin type, I love this stuff so much.
China Doll is the perfect winter/ spring shade for me but a tiny bit too pale for summer. I already own a jar of the next shade, so not purchasing anything new right now, but will probably eventually repurchase more China Doll after my very slight tan has faded.

These jars are really big (loving the empty space!!!), I get 4-6 months of daily use from each one. I have several BB creams and a cushion so will not need to buy anything new for quite a while.

daimbardiva · 20/06/2015 15:47

I like After the Rain too. I had a gift set a while back and just recently finished the bath foam.

One empty for me today. Garnier summer body - I do like this, it does the job colour wise and doesn't smell awful. Won't be repurchasing immediately as I already have another one waiting!

Annarose2014 · 20/06/2015 20:08

Well I binned the Nars Sheer Glow. Half full but it just didn't give me joy (may have ordered the Marie Kondo book, lol)

Now I'm down to 4 foundations which is great cos at one stage I had 8! Blush

jjwhite · 23/06/2015 11:05

New empties this week:

Rodial Stemcell Super Food Facial Oil: really nice, but there are lots of decent facial oils out there and I currently have way too many so won't repurchase for the time being.

Nivea Silk Touch deodorant: won't repurchase. For some reason this lasted half the length of my other deodorants (many of which are also Nivea and exactly the same size/roll-ons etc.) I didn't think the 'silk sensation' element added anything and I've gone back to the Pearl Beauty one instead.

Clinique Moisture Surge Face Spray: I really, really liked this. It just has a bit more oomph than most face sprays as it has glycerin and aloe in it that make it that bit more moisturising. I would repurchase in the future although I think it is definitely an 'added extra' to my skincare routine and not an essential.

Aesop Handwash: really luxurious, smells amazing, will repurchase when I fancy splashing out £30 for a hand wash (i.e. when treating myself and not every day). In the meantime I'm back to the much cheaper but perfectly decent Petit Marseillais range.

Costacoffeeplease · 23/06/2015 14:43

I like the Rodial face oil too, but qvc seem to have stopped stocking that brand :-(

Another empty today, Gatineau age benefit day cream - I like this, it's quite thick but not greasy, but no need to re-purchase at the moment as I have hundreds a few others to get through first

Annarose2014 · 23/06/2015 15:15

Two empties already this week:

An Aldi concealer pen which was really good. Now I'm down to only one concealer - the Nars Radiant one - and it feels fantastic to be down to only one item in a category.

Also finished a Clarins Beauty Flash Balm. Won'r repurchase as it was just basically a primer on me. No brightening or tightening effect. After I cut open the tube I got another month out of it! Always cut your tubes open!

I have a mini sample of Benefits Porefessional which I'll replace it with. Thats the only primer I have left. My embarressing hoard has gotten noticeably smaller since this thread started and I LOVE it.

woodhill · 23/06/2015 16:08

used up my sanctuary bath and shower gel which was a christmas present. Just bought some eye masks by Bliss in the M&S sale but I will always use those things as they are usually brilliant

mowglik · 23/06/2015 16:50

A few full size empties for me:

Clinique turnaround cream - used to be a HG product for me before I started acid toning, but never seem to be able to fit it in my routine anymore so used up the last bit today under body cream
Skin doctors Potent C serum - really liked this serum as it has AHA and BHA too so I'd see a nice brightening effect after using. I want to try the OST C20 serum first but would repurchase if the OST was rubbish
Mary Kay satin hands hand cream - unfragranced hand cream, very moisturising but light and non greasy - have another on the go but will repurchase when it runs out

jjwhite · 23/06/2015 17:05

Great - looks like we've all had a new wave of empties :-)

I have two more I'd forgotten:

Sanoflore Aqua Magnifica: as soon as I smelt this I realised it was going to be way too strong for my skin (smells like strong herbs - rosemary etc.) I ended up pouring it in the bath as a kind of strongly scented, herbal water! Wouldn't recommend.

Garnier Ultimate Blends Argan Oil and Cranberry shampoo and conditioner: smelt nice (remind me of being a teenager for some reason!) but nothing special. Probably wouldn't repurchase above similar priced products.

Does anyone else find it really hard to throw away products that aren't completely used up? I've got a Nars concealer that I love but have had for ages and I'm worried that using it on my spots will make them worse because it's harbouring 2 years worth of bacteria in the tube. I'm thinking of maybe using it up as a skin toned 'eye shadow' on my eye lids? Maybe I should just give up and bin it!

rachelmonday1 · 23/06/2015 17:28

What a fabulous thread, but I'm surprised that the OP thought that she may be the only one with a mountain of makeup. I certainly have, as if I go clothes shopping and can't find anything that I like, I invariably buy some makeup. Maybe a lippy, eyeshadow or something. It's a (bad) habit that I seem to have picked up, but love some of the ideas of how to try to curb this :)

legohurtswhenyoustandonit · 23/06/2015 17:39

Another empty today - protect and perfect day cream. I like this one so much there is already another in the cupboard waiting to be used.

woodhill · 23/06/2015 19:41

yes I hate throwing products away

legohurtswhenyoustandonit · 23/06/2015 19:43

Me too, I hate thinking that I have wasted money.

FrugalFashionista · 23/06/2015 20:12

I binned a jar of eye make up remover pads a few days ago, about twenty ledt. It's very warm here and they started smelling funny overnight, like a ripe brie. And I discovered a spot of mold inside the jar, yuk

My unending lipstick and lipliner are very nearly gone...
