Ashamed of my beauty product hoard!

IPokeBadgers · 01/03/2015 15:04

I have spent some time this morning trying to sort and tidy my beauty and toiletries cupboard and I am actually feeling veryShock andBlush at the sheer volume of stuff that I have, much of it lovely and expensive and unopened!

I reckon it could take me a couple of years to get through it all!

Buying make up as well as lovely bath and shower stuff seems to have become my go to/default pick me up when I want to impulse buy...... but seeing the hoard has brought me down.

anyone else like this and are there any threads that would encourage me to stop buying stuff and use all the lovely products that I have?

please tell me I am not the only person like this?

Ginger loving your mascara hoard and don't feel afraid, a lot of us are just like you if not worse! I do the hot water trick too, as replacing every three our six months would mean purchasing a new one each time I need mascara Grin

I would have an empty today had I remembered to put on hand cream last night. So many jars and bottles and tubes are almost there. Ironically it is very summery here and in summer I need very few products.

woodhill · 15/04/2015 11:11

I must admit I tend to replace as I have so many mini mascaras. Is it a myth about infection to make you keep buying?

woodhill · 15/04/2015 11:13

GingerLemon the Benefit Mascara is excellent imo

FrugalFashionista · 15/04/2015 12:49

I get conjuctivitis from DD2's snotty nose, never mascara.

GingerLemonTea · 15/04/2015 13:28

So I've found another seven! 2 are unopened - one of these was bought in 2011. Not done a grand total but think I'm close to 20 mascaras. Have similar of other stuff. Share your pics!

FrugalFashionista · 15/04/2015 14:11

Stuff that I am trying to use up to reduce clutter. A few items are missing because they are in the shower or on the nightstand. Mostly these are multiples of really dull staples.

FrugalFashionista I'm also currently using up a Eucerin SPF day cream... I find it's quite good ( a bit strong smelling though)... Have you found a better alternative to it or are you pleased with it thus far?

legohurtswhenyoustandonit · 16/04/2015 10:23

I've finally got a couple of empties to report. I've finished a tube of Body Shop aloe vera moisturiser with spf. It was nice, but took ages to soak in. I don't think I'll replace it at present as I've got Boots p&p moisturiser to use. I've also finished a tube of Clinique 7 day scrub. It was quite good but I think I'll wait until it is a gwp rather than replace it at full price. I've already taken a Body Shop aloe vera exfoliator out of the cupboard to replace it.

FrugalFashionista · 16/04/2015 11:31

Well done Lego!

JJ I prefer SPF free Eucerin for moisturizing in the evering and proper sunscreen and BB cream for the day so have no real use for this tube right now. My DC wear it on their faces when sunscreen is overkill but they still need something. It absorbs quickly and does not seem to smear and stain.

Honeypot1 · 16/04/2015 17:08

Test!

Honeypot1 · 16/04/2015 17:40

Grrr, I've tried to post twice today & it didn't work!

Bobbi brown shimmer bronze brick done. Won't repurchase as too shimmery & better high end products for same price available. My fave bronzer emporio Armani 01 is discontinued. Gutted. Nars Laguna & benefit Hoola not in the same league. It was sheer but made my skin flawless. ??

Rimmel sunshimmer binned as too glittery. I thought I'd use for shins and décolletage but realise I've got much nicer body lotions to do that.

Iatemyskinnyperson · 16/04/2015 18:34

Everyone's doing so well!! I only have 2- Giovanni echo chic keratin argan conditioner. V good, will repurchase.

Max Factor clump defy extentions. Wouldn't buy the extentions again as I found that it flaked on me, buy I have replaced it with the normal clump defy, it's my absolute fav.

Frugal Fashionista, you were asking about Hourglass marbled blushes... I have 1- diffused heat. It's a kind of coral. It is lovely, but quite sheer. It does give a nice subtle glow without glitter. I like it, but I'm not mad for another IYKWIM.

FrugalFashionista · 17/04/2015 07:24

Two empties today - a Chanel Hydramax serum sample tube I've had forever. It's okay but has weird blue flakes in it and is a bit slow to dry. I much prefer Chanel Hydra Beauty serum so won't purchase this. But this is acne neutral and feels pleasant so not a bad serum.

L'Occitane blue tube hand cream. Another hasty purchase at a duty free when my hands have felt parched after long flights. I just didn't like it, it smelled and felt greasy bordering on unpleasant, incompatible with touch screens Wink so using it up took forever although the tube was quite small. And I don't actually think it made my hands any less dry - just gunky and horrid smelling. Never again. My HG hand cream is Neutrogena Norwegian formula.

jjwhite · 18/04/2015 11:40

Couple more empties (also sorry if I'm getting confused and reviewing things I've already reviewed!)

Kate Somerville Anti-dark circles eye cream (sample size) - nice moisturising eye cream but no noticeable difference to dark circles. Wouldn't repurchase given you can get hydrating eye creams cheaper elsewhere and it didn't affect my circles.

M V Organics Rose soothing and protecting cream - too thick/rich for my face, ended up using it on eye area/neck/chest. Definitely wouldn't repurchase as it wasn't amazing for the price, and the rose scent was a bit too strong (I'm generally suspicious of overly-scented products).

Nivea pearl and beauty deodorant - probably my fav. deodorant at the moment, subtle and not overpowering smell, and does the job.

Nars creamy concealer in shade Vanilla - really good concealer, probably the best of the (millions!) i've tried. It did seem to slightly dry up/change consistency over the course of the year hence why I'm chucking it when it's not fully used up. I already have a replacement in my stash (it's that good!)

I've got loads of other concealers to use up (Bobbi brown, nars, vichy dermablend, mac among others :-S) but i don't really know what the shelf-life of these kinds of things are? Some (the dermablend foundation stick ones) I seem to have had for literally four years perhaps? Do you think I should chuck them?

GingerLemonTea · 19/04/2015 11:22

So I've found 29 mascaras & will review them later.
A few empties.....

Virgin Vie Foot Fizz - possibly 10 years old. Nice & cooling. No added benefit. Ended up using all over as I don't really use foot stuff.

Sample of Rimmel mousse foundation. Good coverage but went a bit cakey.

Revlon age defying foundation - quite light coverage & sl the wrong tone.

No repurchases.

Eliza22 · 19/04/2015 11:32

Another Paul Mitchell Volume Mousse.... Excellent stuff and will continue to use. I must have bought a job lot as still have a full one in stock.

Vichy LiftActive Serum 10 Eyes & Lashes eye cream. Must replace ASAP as not only good eye serum but very healthy lashes now, and more of them.

M & S knickers.... Bought new undies yesterday. Six pairs so, must bin 6 pairs of old ones Wink

Eliza22 · 19/04/2015 11:35

jjwhite IMO, if something still "works", hasn't gone a weird colour or consistency, I'd say it's ok to use. The only exception for me are mascaras which I bin, around ever 6-8 weeks as suggested.

Everyone's doing fantastically well!! Smile

GingerLemonTea · 19/04/2015 13:34

Calvin Klein Euphoria finished.

IPokeBadgers · 20/04/2015 09:33

My goodness, I havent checked this thread for a few days: glad to see everyone is still taking inspiration and getting on well Smile

I thought i was bad with hoarding mascaras but I am an amateur compared to GingerLemonTea - the thing is, they all give slightly different looks dont they! Have just binned a Maybelline Define a Lash mascara [bright green tube]from my desk drawer....it's been in there a VERY long time, had lots of use but havent used for a while and it has now totally dried out. But it was a good mascara and at least the second one that i bought and used.

Honeypot - I really am convinced you are my sister by another mister....I too went on an underwear clearout this past week! Not buying anymore just yet though...

I am using and enjoying my products: I have a Rituals shower foam and a Molton Brown shower gel both tantalisingly close to finished, the next couple of showers should see them off: I like variety so always have at least 3 shower gels on the go at any one time. Have another MB in the cupboard and at least another couple of Rituals...think there was a 3 for 2 in M&S before Christmas and i stocked up...Embarassingly I think the MB stockpile is from Crimbo 2013 Blush

Also thought i would make the effort and wear facial sunscreen every day, so dug out an Hawaiian Tropic SPF 30 for Face. Bought last year for a holiday but it was so hot i ended up using a waterproof one instead as i think i was sweating this one off! Not sure, but actually think it is causing a slight irritation to my face, so it might be getting binned....which is ironic as it says it is suitable for sensitve skin. Bit annoying as I generally dont have problems with sensitivity, and this actually sinks in really well.

If you enjoyed the mascara hoard, you will love the lipsticks!

IPokeBadgers · 20/04/2015 19:17

Oooh, do tell! Lol

15 types of foundation including one sample, a bare minerals, tinted moisturiser, BB cream plus Clinique dewy smooth which they stopped making about 4 years ago.

Ashamed of my beauty product hoard!
FrugalFashionista · 20/04/2015 21:19

Ginger wow that's impressive! My blusher, eye palette and lipstick hoard. Yes, I have a thing for black.

Just used up the strangest sample ever. A Korean skin79 BB cream cleanser. Went on creamy, became thick and fizzy like something out of a weird science experience - or a fire extinguisher! Now my skin feels glassy smooth and wonderful. What else I am missing?

Nabootique · 21/04/2015 08:47

Bit late to the party, but can I join? Hello. My name is Naboo and I'm a skin care-aholic. At the moment my issue is that I have a lot of cleansers that have been replaced by superior products (IMO) and then they fall by the wayside. I have the same issue with moisturisers, serums, etc., but mostly cleansers. I'm now trying to use the cheaper ones for my AM cleanse and then save the other stuff for PM.

I also have a tonne of make up. I am trying to wear lipstick every day and remember to reapply!

IPokeBadgers · 21/04/2015 13:32

Hi Naboo! I know what you mean about wearing lipstick: Am not a great lipstick wearer [not that you would know it when you see how many I have!] and I am a bugger for putting it on once and then not reapplying, so it just languishes in my bag, unused and unloved. Am making a bigger effort with it...with mixed success.

I think your suggestion of using less favoured skincare products in the morning and then better/maybe more luxurious products at night as part of the wind-down routine is a great idea!
