Soooo..... flares. Anyone actually wearing them?

They're all over the fashion mags, and the bloggers are working themselves into a right old lather about the rebirth of the flared trouser.... but after extensive research I've yet to see the "woman on the street" actually wearing them. I didn't see one pair while I was out shopping today.

Has anyone grasped the nettle and embraced all things 70s?

Hmm, it's unlikely as I'm 5ft with 'comfortable' thighs so will end up looking dumpy.

I will try some on though- have several pairs of summer wedges which would go with.

Wide legged trousers will be the better option I think with fitted tops - currently trying some on from Atterley Road.

Also, bootcuts - someone mentioned them up thread. I know they get a bad press but they are so flattering on most body shapes.

SingingSands · 19/02/2015 18:17

I'm tempted. Wore them in the 90s and they looked great - although I'm no longer a gorgeous skinny teen!

Thinking of waiting for spring and pairing with Hasbeens. Not sure what to wear on top now though?

noddyholder · 19/02/2015 19:14

I wore a pair today and tehy feel really nice! With a white silk shirt big jumper and platform ankle boots felt very slim and tall and I'm neither!

Floisme · 19/02/2015 19:55

I'm hoping to see flicky hair making a comeback too. Mine does it naturally Grin

Ah but MrsCB everything works on the tall and willowy Wink

MrsCampbellBlack · 19/02/2015 20:18

True Amber, curses shoddy genetics Wink

MaryWestmacott · 19/02/2015 20:20

yes, hoping this heralds a return of the wide leg trouser shape, which can look rather fabulous in a 30s sort of way...

Lagoonablue · 20/02/2015 07:29

Was thinking....when did skinnies come in? I remember being in boot cuts then suddenly we were all in skinnies! When did it change?

dexter73 · 20/02/2015 09:02

Until I was about 14/15 I used to wear drainpipes which were basically skinnies. Then it was 501's then bootcuts. I can't remember when skinnies came in but I have been wearing them for, what seems like, ages.

Lagoonablue · 20/02/2015 11:42

Yes. I am old. I remember flares in the 70s, then we went onto 'drainpipes', there was a brief flirtation with pegged jeans (ugh) then 501s were the cool thing. I wore these for ages but lived in Manchester in the 90s and saw lots of flares come in, followed by bootcuts which were around forever. Just can't remember skinnies happening, though I wear them myself and have done for at least 8 years. I know this as DD is 8 and wore skinny maternity jeans!

MaryWestmacott · 20/02/2015 12:10

I remember a conversation one evening on a skiing trip I went on in jan 2008 with a woman in her 30s who was wearing skinny jeans that she finally was wearing them as it's harder to be "an early adopter of a trend in your 30s", so I'm guessing they crossed to the "everyone wearing" category around 2007, so cool kids wearing them 2005/6?

MaryWestmacott · 20/02/2015 12:13

So on that timings, we're about a decade since the last new shape, about time we had a new style of jean become our new basic?

TSSDNCOP · 20/02/2015 20:55

Boyfriend jeans tried to muscle in Mary. I believe the flare will not trounce the skinny.

Twinklestein · 20/02/2015 21:41

I think flares suit more women than skinnies, they're more forgiving. Anything over a 12, skinnies don't look that good.

dexter73 · 21/02/2015 17:08

I have just been looking at some pictures from LFW and I quite like the flares worn short over boots like Alexa chung. Saves on soggy hems too!

Soooo..... flares. Anyone actually wearing them?
RingtheBells · 21/02/2015 17:54

I wore them in the 70's so although I love them, I won't be wearing them as I will look sad and old, I think as I am in my mid/late 50's they are a step to far. I remember putting an extra bit of material in to make them wider when I wore them first time round and they dragged the floor

MrsCampbellBlack · 21/02/2015 17:55

I went shopping to day in Bristol - I couldn't see a pair of flares in topshop, warehouse, house of fraser or harvey nichols.

I'm going to sit on this one until I've ahem reached optimum summer weight and then go and look in april time.

Floisme · 21/02/2015 19:20

RingtheBells, I'm late 50s too and I'm going to wear them! Why not if you still like them? I tried some on a few months ago - I'd forgotten how much better they look on me than skinnies.

Anyway they only seem to come round every 15-20 years so this may be my last chance Grin

CanISayOfHerFace · 21/02/2015 19:32

I've always loved flares but I only wear them in the summer to avoid soggy hems.

Denim ones from J Brand and 18th Amendment are my favourites.

I also have a floral pair from Spell and and the Gypsy Collective which are amazing.

SuperFlyHigh · 21/02/2015 19:33

Wide legged trousers maybe but wore flares in 90s too when younger and slimmer!

BelindaAllWorkedOut · 21/02/2015 20:55

I've worked out that it's boot cut jeans I want, and am going to investigate these www.massimodutti.com/gb/en/women/denim/view-all/boot-cut-jeans-c914501p5200989.html?colorId=427&categoryNav=914501

NickAngel · 21/02/2015 20:57

So skinny jeans are not in now?
I've only just got a pair that finally look ok.
Now it's flares? Seriously?

BelindaAllWorkedOut · 21/02/2015 21:00

I'm going to wear both. I can only see me wearing boot cuts when I am wearing heels, so skinnies are still the All Rounders that go w all my shoes etc.

BestIsWest · 21/02/2015 22:55

Me in the 70s, flares - check, flicky hair - check, cheesecloth shirt - check.

I love flares, may even get myself a pair this time round.

imjustahead · 21/02/2015 23:07

oh good, i am fed up of my skinnies and have three pairs of bootcut/flared jeans that i miss wearing.

two are bog standard New Look dark wash, and i am digging my trainers out tomorrow.

the other pair are more flared, still dark and very flattering on my 5ft 4 size 14 bum. sick of seeing my thighs tbh.

think i might invest in a few skinny band t-shirts for the spring, i am turning the clock back this year!
