Soooo..... flares. Anyone actually wearing them?

They're all over the fashion mags, and the bloggers are working themselves into a right old lather about the rebirth of the flared trouser.... but after extensive research I've yet to see the "woman on the street" actually wearing them. I didn't see one pair while I was out shopping today.

Has anyone grasped the nettle and embraced all things 70s?

I am SO glad that flares are back. I've been trying to embrace the skinny jean trend but my legs look like badly-packed sausages in them. I bought thesewww.very.co.uk/south-sexy-highwaisted-chelsea-kickflare-jeans/1458047000.prd?_requestid=25373 and love them. They are quite long (too long without heels) but after a wash, they were fine with low heeled boots.

TSSDNCOP · 19/02/2015 09:48

I had some early 00's from Karen Millen. They were lovely but you need a platform wedge for a night out or flip flop/converse for day IMO.

I said "NO FUCKNG WAY" when leggings and skinnies, the uniform of my 80's self, returned. I accept that which I cannot change these days.

highlighta · 19/02/2015 09:49

Yay, i bought some last year (funny that though as they are M&S ones that i found in a reject shop............ - we don't have an M&S here?) and they look great on me, but dh looked at me and did the Shock look when i put them on. They are really flattering on me, so i shall now haul them out without fear of the sideways look.

anyway i am always telling him he is so behind the times. I am now ahead of them he he

Do you have two pairs in different lengths TSS? I wear wedges with mine, but they are way too long to wear with sandals.

TSSDNCOP · 19/02/2015 09:51

See marie the way the Very ones are styled is exactly all wrong IMO. Flares and a stiletto heel are Just Wrong. And don't even get me started on the length, too short flares on anyone is Straight to Frumpton without passing Go.

TSSDNCOP · 19/02/2015 09:53

I did have two pairs Highlights. But then I don't mind a slightly frayed back hem on my daytimers.

TSSDNCOP · 19/02/2015 10:01

This is the way I'd go with the styling.

Smurfingreat · 19/02/2015 11:06

I love flares, so I'm delighted they're back. Unfortunately I have worn every pair I've had to death, so have none lurking in the back of the wardrobe to joyfully resurrect. I used to love Miss Sixty Tommy's, (no longer made) and also J Brand Love Story, but at the moment I'm a bit to chubby to fit into the largest size in J Brand. I'm 5'10 and a size 14-16, if anyone else this size has suggestions for a good pair, I would love to hear.

ThatsMyOnlyShirt · 19/02/2015 11:25

I would love a pair of MiH flares but, alas my budget does not stretch that far. Here are the ASOS one's i mentioned down thread. I am 5" 11 so they are from the Tall range. m.asos.com/mt/www.asos.com/ASOS-Tall/ASOS-TALL-Farleigh-Flare/Prod/pgeproduct.aspx?iid=4750395&un_jtt_application_platform=newPlp&un_jtt_redirect

Flingmoo · 19/02/2015 11:30

Not got flares yet but invested in a polo neck top yesterday and hankering after a long sleeved crop top... I think 2015 is the year I'm suddenly interested in this year's trends!

MaryWestmacott · 19/02/2015 11:58

see, I'm finding this harder - I'm very short and have got used to being able to just scrunch up or easily turn up skinnies, whereas flares will lose some of the shape being turned up...

I'm not finding many petite flares, more bootcuts that are still the 00s bootcuts. I'm assuming this is because the wider ones don't flatter the short of leg...

CointreauVersial · 19/02/2015 13:08

Hmm...the majority opinion seems to be to wait until summer and dig out the wedges to wear with them.

Rusty - love the pics! Shame cheesecloth isn't back, eh?

I really do like the trend, but I always like to see one or two others wearing it first (and I'm not talking about people who clearly didn't get the memo about skinnies and are still wearing them from the last time around).

By the way, my DDs (13 and 11) absolutely refuse to believe flares are back. They think I'm making it all up.

Does this mean that boot cuts went out of fashion ages ago? Is it flares or skinnies only now? God it's complicated.minremembermy mum having flares in the early 70's that were so wide that they could have been used as emergency shelter in a down pour. Whole families could have taken up residence under them .

CointreauVersial · 19/02/2015 13:30

Well, that's the dilemma, bigbuttons. I reckon it's all in the styling (particularly if you are 40-ahem-ahem, like me). Otherwise you run the risk of looking like you never stopped wearing them.

Lambzig · 19/02/2015 13:38

Hmm, wasn't too keen on the M&S true 70s flare ones, I didn't like the fading although the denim was nice. Not keen on the front patch pockets. Perhaps they are a bit muttony on a 40something.

Have ordered some MiH ones from the outnet, so will try those.

Agree with TSDD on the styling for now, perhaps going a little more hippyish in summer.

cowbiscuits · 19/02/2015 13:38

I look at them and I don't think 70s cool I think, late 90s. SURELY it's too soon to bring them back. It's like five flipping minutes ago. I've probably still got some.

Like Cointreau says, unless you're really young or incredibly hip it'll just look like you've been wearing the same trousers for 15 years.

Probably a bit more flattering than "Mom Jeans" though.

leedy · 19/02/2015 13:38

My uncle used to get my great-aunt to sew extra panels into his flares in the 70s to make them even wider....

I have visions of myself in a light wash denim pair for summer, but I'm afeared of a)looking like I'm in bootcuts and b)making my legs look stumpy. Will have to try a few on, I suppose. The MiH ones look nice, and there are some interesting options on Asos but a lot of the ones I like seem to have deliberate rips, which, er, no. I remember the days of Bros, I am not going back there. Also I can rip my own bloody jeans.

CuttedUpPear · 19/02/2015 13:40

I for one am very happy to see the return of the high waist, and the departure of the effing ridiculous tightly bound ankle making the removal of skinny jeans a chore.

bigbuttons · 19/02/2015 14:04

I look stupid in high waists as I have a very short torso/long leg ratio. It makes it look like my legs are attached to my rib cage. Not an attractive look

leedy · 19/02/2015 14:08

I have a freakishly long torso so am ok in high waists, I do however have relatively short legs, which is where I fear the flare might be my undoing.

dexter73 · 19/02/2015 14:34

I'm the same shape as you bigbuttons. I tried the M&S flares on yesterday and the waist came up right over my belly button - looked absolutely ridiculous! Actually the flares did nothing for me either but I thought i would give them a go just in case they did look great.

MrsCampbellBlack · 19/02/2015 15:07

I like a high waist but only with tops worn outside - keeps my muffin top under control.

I really hate to say this but do think flares work best on the tall and willowy. And I am neither.

DidoTheDodo · 19/02/2015 15:10

Not for me. I would just look as though I hadn't moved on from my teenage years in the 70s.

Floisme · 19/02/2015 17:53

It'll be my third time round and I'm looking forward to it. Mind you, I'm not so sure about this Alexa Chung ankle length look, although it's far more practical for rainy days. I think I'll let someone else try them out first!

Soooo..... flares. Anyone actually wearing them?
MaryWestmacott · 19/02/2015 18:06

thing is, I was wearing bootcuts and flares while doing my A levels, in 97. So there are 18 year olds who were just born then who've only really worn skinnies, and all their mums wear skinnies. Definately time for a change...
