this is the style, but not the texture I'm looking for. I want smooth, so I can dress down or up iykwim.
Betty PM....I prefer winter dressing too. Summer is ok, I wear more jeans and 3/4 then....winter I love dresses and skirts with opaques etc. I find I have more options.

Karbea · 14/01/2015 22:12

one when I had a proper job I dressed very much as a classic, whereas now I definitely don't.

Drywhiteplease · 14/01/2015 22:13

I think the point is it's all subjective. We all have a definite feel about what look we feel comfortable in. Actors are used to being different characters, and we don't expect them to dress a certain way, because they aren't pigeon holed. I'm sure QueenC you'd look fine in corporate, tailored stuff to someone who didn't know you, but you'd feel all wrong.
Similarly I'd feel terrible in a fierce rock chick look or shapeless grungy outfit, but to someone who was meeting me for the first time, they'd think I looked ok.

That's a really good point Dry! I find it so interesting.

I used to prefer winter dressing but now I know I look better in colour, I do make more of an effort in summer.

OneLittleLady · 14/01/2015 22:21

karbea even when I had an office job, ooooh a long time ago i'm actually a qualified legal secretary you know, I wore everything with a 'twist' at one point I had bright pink hair with an undercut but that was okay because I was in the back office and not client facing EVER Wink

Drywhiteplease · 14/01/2015 22:25

It is fascinating really . Clothes are so much more than things to cover you up/keep you warm aren't they? They say a lot about who we are ,how we feel about ourselves and how we want others to see is and that is what concerns me with the style diagnosis.

muddlingalongquitenicely · 14/01/2015 22:25

In my mind i know how i want to look but when i see myself in the mirror its nothing like i want.

I dont see myself the way i should do iyswim im quite negative about my body and still see myself as a size 16/18 instead of the 12/14 i am. Ive lost my way with clothes and seem to pick stuff that suits taller people where as i am shorter. Im working on losing the rest of the weight and toning up but also need to work on the confidence of clothes shopping and more importantly wearing i think.
Also need to get rid of the guilt about spending money on myself for a change!

Karbea · 14/01/2015 22:31

dry I had specific suits/shoes I wore when I had difficult meetings, so I felt more powerful.
muddling I'm the same I always pick clothes up for tall flat chested women, I really struggle to dress a short booby blonde. I always think I look fat and dreadful in photos, I just don't see what others see at all.

Drywhiteplease · 14/01/2015 22:38

My look has become more "gamine" since I started my present job. I'm short anyway and just can't wear heels to work, although I love them and always wear them to go out and often daytime out of work. My collegues, if you asked them, would say I never wear heels although I scare them when we go out

OP posts:
Karbea · 14/01/2015 22:47

dry the only flats I had before I changed my life were trainers for the gym and flip flops for the beach. I lived in very high heels. Now I only wear heels on nights out and they are a lot lower as very high heels now hurt my feet.

bettykt · 14/01/2015 23:03

Karbea It's taken me a while to adjust to my different lifestyle, when I worked full time, I dressed fairly classic, not alway suits but quite smart and mainly wore heels. I also lived in a city and had access to all the major high street retailers.

When I stopped working I lived in a jeans n Converse uniform and would often buy work type clothes and later on realise they had no place in my new life. I kind of felt in limbo with clothes, I didn't need smart work clothes, I didn't need going out/clubbing clothes and neither did I want to hang out all day in leisure wear Grin i.e. grey tracksuit. I also moved to a small town where the only place to shop was Next and an unmodernised M&S. I was/am at an age where I thought I wasn't catered for by clothing retailers and then I found S&B and discovered online retailers.

Karbea · 14/01/2015 23:17

bettykt this is very similar to me!

muddlingalongquitenicely · 15/01/2015 07:06

Work for me always had a uniform so really easy, then i changed career and worked in an office i bought sine basics but found my smartish stuff being worn for work and my wardrobe merged it didnt help being over weight i wore unshapely stuff and i think thats where my confidence was lost. Money was tight so clothes shopping was usually an unhappy experience for me.

Now ive changed career again no uniform but smarter clothes required and im determined to keep 2 separate capsule wardrobes.

Off to check pin for short booby (dark haired) inspiration Grin
The town i live in m&s closed down we have a smallish debenhams, snotty staffed river island and top shop no idea why they are like it our town isnt exactly posh but you do get them looking down their noses at you (other people have the same experience)

Cranagh · 15/01/2015 07:25

Great intro, Dry! Your earrings are lovely. These are my cousin's designs, I don't have any of it (unfortunately for me!) but his jewelry is beautiful. My dad bought some pieces for his gf. This is the necklace from DH, it is very delicate and small, I love it.

I was quite relieved that the HOC lady said I could wear gold, Blair as I never wear silver. I wonder why but I won't question it now!

Karbea, I really like Chanel, Lancome or Bourjois for eyeliner.

I hate snotty staff, Muddling!

Shop, hope you are ok. The spring trip will be something nice to look forward to.

I liked dressing up for work but have been a sahm for 6 years now and definitely wear skinny jeans too much. I like autumn for fashion best when the new winter clothes are out but you don't have to shiver in a big coat.

Drywhiteplease · 15/01/2015 07:43

Beautiful jewellery Cranagh and I really love your necklace. Despite wearing statement necklaces a lot I actually like the real stuff to be small and discrete, I don't have an everyday necklace, but if I did, it would be a lot like that. I'm a gold wearer here too.

OP posts:
OneLittleLady · 15/01/2015 08:14

Lovely necklace Cranagh

I'm a silver wearer for the most part. I do have a bit of gold but it doesn't really suit me, I look far better in silver tones

Was really hoping for a lie in this morning but nope!

shop how're you doing today?

Cranagh · 15/01/2015 09:20

I forgot to say very well done on your exam results, One!

OneLittleLady · 15/01/2015 09:27

thanks Cranagh Smile

not relishing the idea of going out into the cold but must go collect prescriptions and post some parcels. the Hobbs coat i found in the charity shop brand new was my best purchase of last year, it's warm and cosy but looks good too and is a good length so it keeps to just above my knees covered and warm. combined with my fleece lined tights and boots, i end up staying pretty warm which is really good as I feel the cold so so much.

Really need to dye my hair but it's freshly washed so really need to wait for a couple of days as it covers better and doesn't stain my scalp so much when there's some natural oil on my hair and scalp

New duvet should arrive in the next couple of days and I'm really excited! I feel so old being excited over a duvet haha

Stokey · 15/01/2015 09:42

I know exactly how you feel One - I need new slippers

Well done on your exam, a first is amazing.

I'm small and curvy too Muddling and Karbea and I do feel it's harder to find clothes that flatter you. What works for me is having a bit of flesh -not clevage - showing at the neckline, so scoop necks and v necks rather than high crew necks or polos. It seems to detract a bit from your boobs and hips.

I love the summer but proper summer when you only need to put a dress on and some sandals. I hate the in between bits as I'm always cold and stressing about what to wear on my legs. I grew up in hot countries and really think I should be living somewhere far closer to the equator.

SS wishlist is a maxi skirt and pointy flats - these were also on my autumn wishlist but never quite sorted it out before winter came along.

MarshaBrady · 15/01/2015 09:46

Blair I'm impressed with your SS wish list.

Hmm I'm not sure I can think about it yet. But I know I am looking forward to the weather where you only need a dress and flats.

Actually I'll need new ballet flats.

MarshaBrady · 15/01/2015 09:53

Ok I've thought about it Grin

And I'd like a

Spring skirt
ballet flats
ts
light skinnies - those ones you found Linus were perfect I should get on to it
something pretty, maybe floral but with a neon edge or something (inspired by Blair!)
navy jumper

libertychick · 15/01/2015 10:22

Those earrings are the type I would like dry. I have pinned!

Cranagh your necklace is beautiful.

Very good points about how we can all look good in different styles. I can pull off dramatic looks but feel very uncomfortable in it.

LinusDKD · 15/01/2015 10:39

Morning!

this just arrived and I'm very please with it.

I am not really sure about the colour but I wanted to dip my toe into green jumpers and these were discounted so I ordered it and the same one in light grey.

They are 100% merino wool and I got the idea from DMBL40. I did take the smallest size as they are men's jumpers so I went for the xxxs.

It is very fitted but that's what I wanted to wear with my pencil skirt and my midi skirt (tucked in). I hope they wash well and if they do I might get a navy one as well.

talking about Merino jumpers, lib I still need to pay you back for the red Uniqlo one you picked up for me. Send a pm with your paypal or bank account details and I'll do it asap.

Off to think about my S/S wishlist. Definitely a new pair of sunglasses!

MarshaBrady · 15/01/2015 10:53

That's nice Linus love the colour.

There are loads of things I can't wear. I just can't do anything ott or frilly, or statement-y. Nor can I do too classic. Small window here.

bettykt · 15/01/2015 11:08

Lovely necklace Cranagh

Bargain price for merino jumpers Linus I'm still Waiting a Tippi from Jcrew.

Okay SS I've had a small think Grin

A lighter colour Le Pilage bag. Come to think of it Shop did you buy an orange one? Are you flogging it? Can I be first in the queue to buy it off you if you're planning on selling it?

A floral skirt, I can do florals in the summer, it needs to be casual.
Some decent white jeans, bought cheap ones last year to test them out but fancy a better pair this year.
Probably need to upgrade some tanks and tees.
