More crepey wisdom.....

I'm a crepey, with caveats. I like a dry sherry, but it has to be accompanied with olives or salty almonds. I like knitting, but only if someone else casts on and casts off, and I don't have to alter the width. I'm also terrible at tensioning, and end up with the wool pulled as taut as piano wire.

As for opera, it leaves me cold. Which is surprising, as I can be moved to floods of tears by orchestral or choral music. I think it's the way they just go on and bloody on in opera, and the ridiculous melodramatic plots. And I'm not keen on the typical operatic voices, with so much vibrato they could be singing any one of three notes.

cremolafoam · 17/01/2015 19:31

Love opera- used to go to the Saturday afternoon concerts at ENO when I lived in London. Also knit badly , but with enthusiasm.
I have tickets to La Trav too on tour here in the springSmile

Blackduck · 17/01/2015 20:06

Cremo Shock but I did :) at 'outside the synagogue'!

Opera - nooooo., not for me... sherry - hmm - only if very dry. Knitting - yes, but haven't done any in a while....

I am waiting for my birthday tea - in appears to involve eggs cooked in tea Hmm

bigTillyMint · 17/01/2015 21:13

Am loving that so many of us are knitters of some descriptionSmile

BD eggs cooked in tea for your birthday. Interesting!

hattymattie · 17/01/2015 21:33

I fear I knit like HerbsGrin

CointreauVersial · 17/01/2015 21:51

Crem - What a nightmare. Something similar happened with my GF, who refused to give back his car keys as he approached his 90th birthday.... until he demolished someone's garden wall in full view of a police car. The car followed him home, blue lights flashing, but when questioned on his driveway he denied all knowledge of the incident and even accused the policeman of putting the dent in his car.... that was pretty much the last time he drove.

GF then took to hanging about at DDad's petrol station, and if anyone left their keys in or engine running while refueling he would jump in and attempt to drive off; many's the time we were treated to the sight of DDad sprinting out of his office and flinging himself on the bonnet of a car while the unsuspecting owner was in the shop.... ah, bless him!

DS's GF was over for dinner again. DD1 had the hump because it meant she had to change out of her PJs.

The only reason I was round QQ's neck of the woods was I was at the opera: Barber of Seville at the King's Head. I went out of Choir Solidarity because our MD was Figaro but I loved it, laughed a lot and was v. impressed.

Then met our very own QQ and had tea and cake in beautiful, peaceful (and tidy) house with welcoming husband, sweet pooch and courteous, personable teenage son. And did I mentIon she was looking rather chic?

Came home to our bad (still in disgrace) dog, DH and DD in a pile of pizza boxes with DD's friend, on a movie binge. Hot Fuzz Paul and El Dorado. Got to admire their stamina.

Crem, so sorry you've had those nasty surprises. We had awful anxiety over MIL's driving and, like you, we only found out about accidents indirectly. Hope your DF is making good progress.

Auriga · 18/01/2015 00:53

Sorry I mean hope your DFIL is making good progress

beachyhead · 18/01/2015 07:13

Loving the idea of CV's renegade grandfather trying to steal cars at his sons petrol stationSmile

Blackduck · 18/01/2015 07:37

Augira QQ always looks chic.... :)

Here birthday tea was eggs that are pickled/soaked? In tea and soy
Sole with capers, butter, parsley etc - some french dish
A birthday cake iin the shape of a clock made of 12 cupcakes as the hours, my age on as candles and chopsticks pointing out the time I was born.(Anyone for a cupcake - got a tonne of them....)

Spiral episodes 3 and 4 and no wine despite the temptation of bubbles....

CV you gdad sounds hilarious if dangerous!

NUFC69 · 18/01/2015 08:01

So sorry to hear about your DFil, Crem. What a nightmare for you all. I was even more Shock Shock Shock at CV's DGF. I hope I know when it's time for us to give up driving - atm I am still at the stage of moaning about the elderly driving too slowly (well, actually if I am honest, at any one driving too slowly. I am looking at you, driver, who joined the Central Motorway last night doing about 35 mph when everybody else was doing 70. Hmm )

I am a knitter and I used to be a dressmaker - all my own clothes and the DC's when they were small. These days I might make curtains if pushed, or shorten trousers. I don't have the time anymore, probably because I spend too much time looking at screens.

bigTillyMint · 18/01/2015 08:18

BD, did DH make it all with DS's help?!

CV, I too am Grin at CV's GF!

NU, I used to do stuff on the sewing machine. Now I hate it - it's such a faff! Screens are much easier!

Blackduck · 18/01/2015 08:24

BTM yes (but not the cup cakes... They were from Waitrose)

NUFC69 · 18/01/2015 09:34

BD, I thought the cupcake clock showed great originality. I am making raspberry pancakes as DS is coming round for breakfast with his DC. We have a sprinkling of snow here again.

Rosebag · 18/01/2015 10:07

Hugs to Cremo for having to endure DDads driving disasters…and so sorry he's landed up in hospital over diabetic problems. Was he a bit of a lad in his younger days, I wonder? Gobsmacked also at CV's GF's story…But this isn't an uncommon problem…crumbleys on the road when they shouldn't be. Taking their keys away feels like taking their independence away but they are a danger. I keep seeing new dents in DParents car….I don't think they even know when they've hit something.

I love the opera…have come to it with encroaching Crepey-dom. DH doesn't like it so I used to go with DM but it's not happening now she's more frail. I went mostly to ENO…I have never been to ROH…would love to. Opera suits my voice best….I was very surprised at that… I can knit quite neatly but I'm useless at following a pattern. I have never made a garment in my life. I prefer gin to sherry.

Envy at QQ and Auriga having tea after the opera in trendy Islington. I feckin' froze yesterday…after 6 hours of teaching. Lovely class though and they gave me good feedback. DH is living it up I'm Cambridge…I am about to start homework screaming. What have I done to deserve this? Perhaps I should lock myself away and sing Vissi D'arte at the top of my voice….its certainly how I feel…Grin

motherinferior · 18/01/2015 12:13

Hi all. Couldn't post yesterday as my phone ran out of juice - I think the battery may be on its way out...

Many thanks for all good wishes. Pleasant lunch at Carluccios (discovered LimoncelloGrin) and my mum is determined to face the future with as positive an attitude as possible. Stoma nurse apparently vg (and ignored my dad when he got weepy Angry). I do think she underestimates the recovery and impact of it all ("I'm sure I'll be out before the 10 days they say") but in all honesty that may be a good thing.

Have been for brisk walk with friend round Ladywell Park and am braced for tomorrow.

And we need a new thread!

Blackduck · 18/01/2015 12:29

MI glad it went okay! I have the most wonderful jar of hazelnut truffles from Cs for my birthday (have hidden from dp).

Fingers crossed for tomorrow.

bigTillyMint · 18/01/2015 12:49

MI, glad it went OK too.

BD, truffles sound good.

Have made the banana, walnut and peanut butter cake (well, it's in the oven) but I didn't have any soured cream, so I used milk and plopped in 3tbs of peanut butter too. Will report back when the troops have tried it. Also made choc courgette cake - will PM you Lalsy with the recipe.

DS is playing 2 matches today - one for the team he is trialling for and the other is an important match for his "old" team. DD has just got up and doesn't look like she's about to do any work. She doesn't seem to be doing much at all for her mocks which is a bit worryingConfused

herbaceous · 18/01/2015 12:54

DP has taken DS to soft play, his idea of hell, to let me get on with my assignment. I think he has now retired to a nearby pub for lunch.

This assignment is frying my brain. I lie awake worrying about it all night, then can't get my head around it during the day.

MrsSchadenfreude · 18/01/2015 14:21

new thread

wordassociationfootball · 18/01/2015 14:27

CV I have just hooted re your GF lurking for TDA ops. V sad, obvs, but also brilliantly spirited.

DH has just blackmailed/bribed dd1 to leave the house in daylight after a big scene. I wonder how/what with.....

Good vibes to all for a pleasant Sunday afternoon.
