Remember our chats??

Our SOTD (scent of the day)?

Is there a thread I've missed Shock

If not, lets take it up here :)

SOTD an unknown sample from my perfume drawer, woodsy and irisy, am baffled but enjoying it!

Hi Frugal! I always drift back to this thread although I try not to. Need to keep to just swapping stuff rather than buying..

SOTD: Ulric de Varens French Sweet. Fabulous find from a supermarket in a small town in northern Greece. Lovely sweet, sugary scent. Somehow not sickening at all. This and the Amber Oud I have are body mists, so I have not included them in my swapping list. However, they are available, should someone want any! I think I prefer the body mist formula/concentration to an eau de parfum/eau de toilette, especially in the summer. It seems to "melt into you" better, somehow. Veils you in the scent. Sillage is great too.

shins · 17/11/2014 13:18

Frugalfashionista, did you used to be DonaAna? I loved your posts on the previous threads so much! Thanks for sharing the knowledge.

SOTD: En Passant by Frederic Malle, a sample. It's a lovely white floral but nothing that remarkable really. It does feel very luxurious though, like all his perfumes. I'm going through a (dangerous) phase where I feel like I should buy FBs of my favourites before Estee Lauder ruins them/triples the pricetag.. I own Portrait of a Lady and Carnal Flower but also hanker after Une Fleur de Cassie.

leedy · 17/11/2014 13:30

SOTD: sample of Escentric 02, which is ... nice enough, I suppose. Not wowed.

wiltingfast · 17/11/2014 13:55

Hi Frugal! Good to see you Grin

SOTD here is Miller Harris Fleurs de Bois. Really love this. It's v woody on me, some flowers come through quite strongly too. Don't really get any citrus specifically but it does feel fresh for a woody perfume. A lot of depth to it, I really enjoy it. Half way down my sample already alas .

SOTD: Knize Ten. Really loving this rich, vintage-y leather scent. It does make me feel like I'm Lauren Bacall (sadly this is not visible to anyone else). It had a slightly sharp opening that mellowed very quickly, and now several hours later is staying close to the skin with just a hint of shoe shop in the general yumminess. I often think of scents as colours: this is deep chestnut brown.

Fabulassie · 17/11/2014 15:04

I test drove Guerlain LHeur Blu yesterday. I thought it was similar to Mitsouko, but sweeter. It seemed to fade away a bit.... I couldn't smell it after a few hours, but my friend said she could when she sniffed my nexk. I like when a scent stays strong.

ClaudiaNaughton · 17/11/2014 15:55

shins loving the Guide. frugal have ordered Le snob also. When I have learnt both by heart I shall post here.Wink

Found the Miss Dior Blooming Bouquet this weekend and it's nice but reminds me of something I wore as a teenager - I wore nice perfumes, but it's just too young for me. And very floral to the point of being too sweet and sickening for me. I'm sure it would work amazingly on other people, but it just doesn't work on me.

Went to Jo Malone for the first time and tried a few scents. I quite like Blackberry and Bay. I bought a shower gel/hand soap as I have way too many perfumes and the Jo Malone ones apparently don't last very long on the skin - I couldn't smell it on my wrist after around 2 hours so pleased I didn't go for the cologne. But I felt like trying something from there :)
The Blackberry and Bay reminds me of a flower shop I worked in years ago - the smell of wet dirt, cut flowers and green leaves and then it develops into having very masculine note as well - it reminds me of something my DH wears, might be a vetiver note.

SOTD: Jil Sander Pure. It just smells clean. It's described as a floral woody musk scent with sea notes as the top note - to me, it's just clean and fresh. It reminds me of clean, crisp bedding that has been drying in the garden in the summer. I do get the floral notes, but they aren't sweet like the Miss Dior Blooming Bouquet - they are fresh and light and remind me of real flowers.
I've used this perfume for years and I seem to forget about it because I have loads of other newer perfumes, but if I only could have one perfume for the rest of my life, I think it would be this - it doesn't really offend anyone but it's not boring.

ToysRLuv · 17/11/2014 17:10

SOTD: YSL La Collection Nu. First bottle that jumped at my hand in the front of the cupboard. Easy choice. It's a day of cleaning at home (sorting through my tons of art and craft things). I am already covered head to toe in dust and spider webs. But I smell nice.

FrugalFashionista · 17/11/2014 18:25

Hi Wilting! A perfume from a sample that is running out always seems to smell better than anything else, ever. Ditto for discontinued gems that are impossible to find.

Shins yes I've N/C'd in the past - I used to be a shopaholic and still love fashion but have been trying to change my ways. I think I haven't bought any perfume in the past six months... Wink

Claudia you can post your impressions without reading a lot of books - after all, perfume reviews are just opinions. But the guides do help you to find the great stuff - this thread as well - and learning about scents is fascinating.

Keeping it simple today with Coromandel. Yesterday's SOTD was Yatagan, a hit of deep green coniferous goodness.

Toys I wore some of your Safari the other day - I really like it. Trying not to buy anything any more - I have so many things to enjoy. Nu is fantastic too.

Canny classics are difficult. Mitsouko is too difficult for me still and for the longest time Shalimar and Chanel No. 5 were too. They made me think of dead relatives and musty fur coats. For some reason, I like to sample L'Heure Bleue at airports. It smells very mature, powdered and lacquered to the max. Probably because of that I always get fantastic service while wearing it. Perfumes I found a Tom Ford I haven't tried before - London - smokey goodness. And they had Hiris from Hermes, I thought it was discontinued, one to try for iris lovers. I love 28 La Pausa, Hiris is pretty close but perhaps more rooty and green...

niminypiminy · 18/11/2014 12:00

Taking a break today from leather, so the SOTD is Frederic Malle Une Fleur de Cassie. The opening was one of those that make you raise your eyebrows and think - am I going to have to try to get this off? But it settled to a very elegant mimosa (with doubtless other things in there, I'm useless at detecting notes). I have a sample of Caron Farnesiana (nearly run out Sad) which is a gorgeous deep yellow comfort scent - like eating battenburg cake sitting on a banquette at a cafe table with a vase of mimosa in the centre. Une Fleur de Cassie is more like a chic Parisienne buying a spray of mimosa for her chic appartement.

leedy · 18/11/2014 13:07

SOTD: sample of Miller Harris Noix de Tubereuse, which is totally not the sort of thing I normally like (quite sweet, big blast of tuberose) but I'm quite enjoying today. Not enough to buy a FB probably but will definitely finish the sample.

Fabulassie · 18/11/2014 13:15

I sampled some Vivienne Westwood Naughty Alice this morning and wore it while I browsed HoF. I quite like it: it's sweet without being sugary and it's interesting. I want to go back and have another go at it - there's a reasonably-priced box set containing Eau de Parfum and lotion.

But, I was given a sample of Aqua di Parma and so when I got home and had a shower, that was what I sprayed on - my SOTD. I'm not sure I care for it. It smells nice but I'm not sure it's feminine enough for me.

shins · 18/11/2014 13:16

niminypiminy I tried Knize Ten recently but it was a bit too dry and masculine on me, more Humphrey Bogart than Lauren Bacall! Smile - I usually love leathers so was surprised.

SOTD: Malle's En Passant again. I'm getting to like it, like pretty much all of his perfumes when I wear them enough.

Atelier Colognes are offering their sample sets for a tenner at the moment, teamed up with Olfactoriastravels!

ClaudiaNaughton · 18/11/2014 13:21

Une Fleur de Cassie is the scent used by Ina Garten.

leedy · 18/11/2014 13:26

Ooh, just ordered that sample set, I've wanted to try a couple of those - thanks!

canny1234 · 18/11/2014 13:45

Wilting thank you so much.I've received your samples.Love the cute Tauer tin!I've definitely fallen in love with Kilians Sacred ground. Its such a beautiful Sandalwood for cooler weather. Its been fascinating trying on Cuir de Russie and 31 Rue Cambon as I've heard so much about them.My favourite though is 1932 so far.
Does anyone else living rurally want to try these Chanels?I know its difficult for some to try the exclusives and i'm happy to send them on.

Welcome back Frugal.We've missed you.

Toys I haven't forgotten about the decants .I will definitely do them this week .

OneLittleLady · 18/11/2014 13:50

I'm going to ask again if anyone, anyone at all, wants to try Yatagan. I cannot wear it at all, it gives me migraines. I have a full bottle sitting here that needs a new home. Please, someone, anyone, take it!!

wiltingfast · 18/11/2014 13:57

I'd love to try it OLL! Just looked it up on Fragrantica and it sounds a bit mad Grin:-

"The fragrance, named after the sharp, curved Turkish saber Yatagan, is an invitation to join an adventure on the traces of Ottoman horses. It’s exotic, mysterious sonority is reminiscent of oriental and adventurous destinies. The clinging warm, bold, and sensual scent resembles an extremely rare oriental wood that was used as incense in Hindu homes for centuries. Yatagan’s wood notes mixed with subtle undertones of herbs such as galbanum, patchouli, incense, Artemisia and mint make this a perfect fall and wintry scent. Yatagan was launched in 1978. The nose behind this fragrance is Vincent Marcello."

I like galbanum notes and wood, intruiged as to how mint fits in!

But I'm in Ireland so if anyone else wants it, they should have first dibs.

Canny I haven't sent you anything!? Really must do up my list so I can get some swaps in!

OneLittleLady · 18/11/2014 14:09

wilting if no one else asks for it, its yours. It might be a while til i can post though as im not well atm. I've posted to you before though with no problem, cant remember what we swapped but we've definitely swapped something before

canny1234 · 18/11/2014 14:11

Shins not Wilting!
I'm obviously having a minor brain storm( caused by having my parents here for the weekend).
My tablet also seems to be spitting out random letters at the moment.

We'veissed = we've missed.

I'd love to try Yatagan, maybe split the bottle?

shins · 18/11/2014 16:09

So glad they arrived safely Canny. I didn't send them by Parcel Motel after all as it's really expensive to send rather than receive parcels, so I had my fingers crossed!

leedy I got two, won't they make lovely presents?

OneLittleLady · 18/11/2014 16:20

the bottle ive got of Yatagan is pretty big, 100mls at least so it could definitely be split though im not sure how to do it? if anyone could give me any pointers, i'd appreciate it Smile
