Key pieces to keep me (reasonably!) up-to-date please....

I'm going shopping next week! I'd like to buy a couple of bits that make me look a bit more up-to-date for autumn/winter. I usually spend the winter in skinny jeans, vests and jumpers or pencil skirts/wrap dresses with opaque tights and black ankle boots. I don't feel HORRIBLY unfashionable.....and I'm not talking about being bang on trend head to toe.....but I was wondering if there are any recommendations for certain things I could look out for to keep me looking like I half know what I'm doing! Smile Many thanks in advance!

Sleep can you link to your idea of chunky jumpers, mini skirts, jersey dress and classy scarves

Great list Smile

Sleepwhenidie · 14/09/2014 17:17

Oh blimey - this thread has taken a turn I hadn't expected Grin

Do you want things that are actually for sale or just pics for inspiration Mozz?

No pressure, sleep

MozzchopsThirty · 14/09/2014 17:57

Thanks sleep Grin

Things for sale preferably

I'm 5'7, size 10, pale and blonde

Sleepwhenidie · 14/09/2014 20:11

Ok - I've had a whizz around the internet and proper chunky knits are thin on the ground, maybe its a bit early in the season. I've pinned a load of things I like here though - all my taste of course (and a neutral grey/black palette which I tend to go for, its not for everyone) and then I add colour/interest with odd bits and pieces like bags, shoes, scarves or jewellery.

AudacityOfHuge · 15/09/2014 10:14

sleep, any idea what style jumper goes with a white shirt which is long, poky out the bottom long, and chiffony. I haven't got a big budget so will have to go for cheap i.e. £30. I keep looking but whenever I try on they always look like workwear or it's my first day at big school, I'm an unhappy 14 so need something to hide the stomach. Thank you fashion messiah Grin .

Sleepwhenidie · 15/09/2014 10:20

What do you think of the Zara wool jumper - lovely colours...

Sleepwhenidie · 15/09/2014 10:24

I like this too - its 100% acrylic so its not going to wear well but at £9, I wouldn't break my heart over binning it next Spring...

Sleepwhenidie · 15/09/2014 10:44

Could this work? (60% and so cheap...)

This is cute

Its fun rather than a capsule piece but I like this, think it would look nice with a white shirt under.

I'm throwing these at you with no idea of your taste or colour preferences or what you will be wearing them for of course Confused!

leedy · 15/09/2014 10:54

I am liking this thread, largely because I think I own many of these items already...

Sleepwhenidie · 15/09/2014 10:54

Audacity I've pm'd some ebay links too...

lurkingaround · 15/09/2014 10:59

Really like that Zara blue wool jumper. Didn't see it there last week.
See? This is why I'm avoiding S&B!!! Too many lovely links here. Who needs house renovations?

QueenCardigan · 15/09/2014 12:49

Having met sleep I can vouch that she is one stylish lady. She's also a regular on the vogue thread so do come and join us if you love talking clothes.

There seems to be lots of purple (Pantone radiant orchid is colour of the year) and burgundy around at the moment. Also Chelsea boots. And according to the Boots magazine green nails are the colour to have this season.

MozzchopsThirty · 15/09/2014 18:54

Wow sleep I loved the Pinterest stuff Zara will have a visit from me this weekend
Some of the jumpers would make me look like a bag of shit though Grin

TwoNoisyBoys · 16/09/2014 09:26

My shopping list is getting bigger and bigger Smile my poor credit card! Ah well, hopefully the stuff I buy will last a long time, if I avoid my usual trick of quantity over quality!!

Damn you sleep I just had a look at your pinterest board and you appear to have found a replacement scarf (the Jigsaw animal print one with red trim) to the Zara one I lost last year. It was my favourite scarf, but I've not seen anything close enough to it since!

Anyone who's interested - that Jigsaw scarf will go brilliantly with black, grey, burgundy...most everything really. (I can't justify it though - on a spending ban - sob)

I love your list sleep. I spent a lot of time getting my wardrobe sorted and paired down for last A/W and most of your list was on it. It felt great to just know that everything I owned worked together :)

Sleepwhenidie · 16/09/2014 16:10

Sorry sorry sorry Grin

MaryWestmacott · 16/09/2014 18:19

I've found lots of burgundy and mustard clothes about at the moment, not sure I can wear mustard, but as there's also lots of grey and navy, I can put burgandy with both so have picked up some burgandy jeggings to wear with my big souchy jumpers I already have in grey and navy.

There seems to be lots of 'oversized roll necks' like the first picture in this look book from Oasis. So far, not many places seem to be actually stocking them, although I saw a cream one in Sainburys the other day and have since been annoyed that I walked out without it. (might have to go to the big sainsburys this week and pick one up, normally get food delivered so rarely go in).

Can anyone link to some cheaper mini skirts that don't look completely cheap? Am skint at the moment and wanting to update a little.

Sleepwhenidie · 16/09/2014 18:21

When you say cheap, what do you have in mind Smile? And what style/colour?

MaryWestmacott · 16/09/2014 18:32

Under £50 as I've already massively overspent... (yep, cheap!).

Mini skirts, I'm relatively thin and very short (5'0), so can do short skirts. However, am not too sure if I can do leather or fake leather at my age without looking a bit like Lilo Lill...

Rather annoyed this is out of stock in a size 8. (Debating buying the 10 and having it taken in, at that price, I should be able to get that still for a bargainous price).

redredread · 16/09/2014 19:31

If anyone is looking for bargains, can I recommend the oxfam online shop - basically a fixed price, easy to navigate version of eBay. I think some brands - eg whistles - donate surplus stock, and there's some great vintage stuff there. I've just ordered a beautiful 1960s aquascutum coat. Much easier to search for/identify the good stuff than in a charity shop.

polyhymnia · 16/09/2014 19:34

All good stuff here but black skinnies, Chelsea boots and burgundy as a colour have all been around for years now.

PecanNut · 16/09/2014 20:20

Sleep's contribution has also inspired me to keep an eye on this thread... need help.

MaryWestmacott · 16/09/2014 20:37

Right, I've just decided to order that skirt I linked to above even though the smallest size they have is a size 10 and I'm really a size 8, I figured at £12 I can afford to get it taken in to the right size and still be spending less than I would be on others that I've not liked quite as much. (and then I accidentally bought a knitted dress in the clearance sale as well - oh well).

So I'm thinking with an oversized roll neck jumper, thick tights ankle boots look.

I'm after the big roll neck jumper (think I'll go back and check out the sainsburys one) and a mustard jumper.

Sadly, I kind of agree with Polyhymnia about black skinnies and chelsea boots - both were worn a lot last year by the woman in our town. It still will look good, but perhaps not so "wow, is that new?" looking. Burgundy feels a bit more 'new' because I didn't see much of it about last year/year before. Perhaps it's because it's being put with other colours, and often being the only colour being put in a all grey outfit that seems to be around now, so it's standing out more...

Greenstone · 16/09/2014 20:39

Agree polyhymia but I still think they look great every autumn. Just kind of an easy uniform.

Incidentally I saw my younger sis the other day and she had on a new pair of jet black skinnies which she'd cuffed slightly at the ankle - Amelie jeans I think they were, from River Island? They looked really fresh and smart for some reason.
