Key pieces to keep me (reasonably!) up-to-date please....

I'm going shopping next week! I'd like to buy a couple of bits that make me look a bit more up-to-date for autumn/winter. I usually spend the winter in skinny jeans, vests and jumpers or pencil skirts/wrap dresses with opaque tights and black ankle boots. I don't feel HORRIBLY unfashionable.....and I'm not talking about being bang on trend head to toe.....but I was wondering if there are any recommendations for certain things I could look out for to keep me looking like I half know what I'm doing! Smile Many thanks in advance!

Wearing a pretty collared (or even just plain) blouse/shirt under a crew neck jumper/sweater is one way of freshening the standard jumper and skinnies look.

Does anyone have any lovely biker boots they recommend? I keep looking at the DM Gayle and was also recommended the Meg on here but I'm not sure if they'd work with a skirt and tights.

This thread has definitely given me the impetus to get rid of the dross from my wardrobe and replace the tired stuff.Smile

MelonOfTroy · 17/09/2014 08:56

Also, re the Doc Martins, what do you think of the dress blue colour? Is it wearable with blue denim jeans do you think?

Sleepwhenidie · 17/09/2014 09:15

Grin at LiloLill and Velma!

Top tip re Oxfam red, will check that out.

I think (p)leather skirts can look good no matter what your age if you pair it with understated stuff that is good quality - I (age 41) wouldn't do bare legs and heels for example, but I wore mine with a white T, long pendant, bare legs and pistols to a gig on Saturday. When it gets colder I'll be wearing it with opaque tights and a nice jumper, chunky roll neck one or perhaps a fine knit cashmere with a scarf. You have to feel comfortable and confident in it though! I like that tweedy skirt Mary.

Melon what budget do you have in mind for boots, range is very wide!

Sleepwhenidie · 17/09/2014 09:35

Oh - and what size are you?

Sleepwhenidie · 17/09/2014 10:18

OK - I have added a load of bikers to the pinterest board

Dancergirl · 17/09/2014 11:08

Loving this thread too.

sleep tell me about Uterque, I haven't heard of the company before.

Someone mentioned Hush for slouchy jumpers, what's their quality like?

Sleepwhenidie · 17/09/2014 11:13

It's a new, sort of big sister co to Zara dancer, the fashion crowd love it apparently (darling) Smile

So no stores in UK yet I see from the website?

Sleepwhenidie · 17/09/2014 11:59

No - online only and (I think), staying that way.

leedy · 17/09/2014 12:11

I'd just like to point out that this thread has made me buy a grey cashmere jumper. Made me, I tell you.

MaryWestmacott · 17/09/2014 13:15

Oh now that Uterque website might just ruin my "minimum spend September" plans.

lurkingaround · 17/09/2014 14:00

Oh stop!!!
I had forgotten about Uterque and now you've reminded me!! NO no no! I love that place.

Dancergirl · 17/09/2014 14:20

leedy where did you get it from?

My purse is itching too, I am in spending mood.

sleep what shall I buy? I am 5'3", light skin, dark hair and eyes, size 12 with boobs and wider shoulders than hips.

leedy · 17/09/2014 14:23

This! LOOK IT HAVE SPARKLY BITS.

(now I am worried I will look like I've been at The Bedazzler)

Dancergirl · 17/09/2014 14:38

That's nice leedy

I am thinking about this from Hush:

But not sure if it's looks a bit school uniform-y....

Dancergirl · 17/09/2014 14:40

sleep I love both the Cos and Jigswaw animal print scarves on your pinterest board.

leedy · 17/09/2014 14:40

Ooh, that's nice, don't think it looks uniformy at all (and I speak as someone whose school uniform jumper was basically that colour). Unless you wear it with an ill-fitting wool pleated skirt and a shirt and tie, of course...

Dancergirl · 17/09/2014 14:47

I was thinking of layering it with a long vest (as in pic) and skinnies.

greenstone I love the Jigsaw scarf, worth the money do you think?

Sleepwhenidie · 17/09/2014 15:11

leedy that's lovely - I have a definite weakness for pale grey cashmere, it always feels softer than other colours (and is - apparently something to do with the dyeing process Confused) AND sparkly bits so that would be very me except I've had to put a ban on both to get some variety in my wardrobe Grin

dancer that's a nice jumper - sorry I don't have any experience of Hush knitwear, only pj's - they are lovely quality and run slightly on the large side. What else are you looking for Grin?

I have to say, I saw another, slightly cheaper animal print scarf earlier and was going to pin it but the edging on the Jigsaw one really does give it an edge (!) I think, the other one looked a little meh in comparison.

Dancergirl · 17/09/2014 15:20

Right that's it....I'm going to order the Hush jumper in a s/m and the Jigsaw scarf. Kerr-ching!

On a general note, I find things like making sure your hair and skin look good can really make huge difference to how you look. Sometimes I buy clothes I see in catalogues and then wonder why I don't look as good in them as on the models....And then I realise my hair isn't done and I don't have any make up on.

Hair - well cut, coloured, hi-lighted etc. Make up - tinted moisturiser or light foundation, bit of blusher, mascara, lip tint/gloss. People see your face first before your clothes.

Sorry I didn't mean to hijack thread.

Tryingnottoswear · 17/09/2014 16:21

I tend to wear whatever doesn't need too much thinking about in the morning!

polyhymnia · 17/09/2014 17:19

Glad to hear greys d burgundy still around as I really like them - despite fact they were colours if my school uniform.
