navy - ageing or classic?

Am struggling with this having bought a few items of navy clothing recently. I'm mid 30s btw.

I don't think grey goes with navy...

sweetnessandlite · 20/08/2014 13:50

I wouldn't wear grey with navy either.

I like wearing navy with

white,
red
some neutral colours.

Kablooger · 20/08/2014 13:51

thing is, there are SO MANY shades of navy

noddyholder · 20/08/2014 13:52

I like it with grey

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 20/08/2014 14:00

It is the basis of my casual wardrobe, often worn with jeans and either coloured or tan sandals, or tan boots and a tan or fabric bag. For more formal daytime wear I tend to mix greys and blacks as I can't get the accessories right with navy - too many different shades of it and black shoes/bags don't look quite right. I don't have any navy in my evening wardrobe either I don't think.

I'm another who was out off for at least 20 years by secondary school uniform.

Sorry for a bit of a thread hijack - what colour of tights and shoes (as opposed to boots) would you wear with a navy dress in Autumn/Winter?

hollyisalovelyname · 20/08/2014 14:09

I luffs navy.
Classy

SageYourResoluteOracle · 20/08/2014 23:46

50Shades- try it! You won't regret it. Then you'll be 50ShadesofNavy! Howzatt? Grin

Sirchenin - many of my navy pencil skirts and dresses I wear with 100 denier black tights and black patent heels BUT I have a sleeveless navy dress that I'm wearing for An Important Meeting in a few weeks and I'll probably team it with some nude fishnets and black patent heels- less severe for the time of year

SageYourResoluteOracle · 20/08/2014 23:48

Sorry, Sir: I omitted the 'j'

Should also add that a burgundy shoe can also look good with navy. Or a burgundy tight.

hollyisalovelyname · 21/08/2014 09:45

Sage you wear black with navy!!!!
Try Russell and Bromley for navy shoes.

nickEcave · 21/08/2014 12:16

Dark burgundy looks great with navy - I have some very shiny high burgundy wedges from Office which look great with a navy dress. I also wear grey suede ankle boots and grey tights with it.

flowery · 21/08/2014 12:20

I wear a lot of navy, as black is hideous on me. Basically most of my trousers and skirts are navy, which I wear with turquoise/pink/green/bright blue/cream tops or jumpers. I wear navy opaque tights and navy shoes or boots with them.

SirChenjin · 21/08/2014 12:39

Never thought to try burgundy with navy, thanks for that suggestion. I normally wear my navy dresses with navy opaques and navy shoes in the winter, but sometimes I feel it's a bit of a navy overkill. Also wear my tan leather high heeled knee lenght boots, and that looks quite good - but good to have an idea for shoes

sweetnessandlite · 21/08/2014 12:41

Burgundy looks really good with navy.
I wore it together once (by accident) and had lots of compliments.

SirChenjin · 21/08/2014 13:11

Do you wear burgundy opaques with the burgundy shoes?

Charitygirl1 · 21/08/2014 18:31

Navy is no less corpsifying on me than black, so I steer clear of both. I also think it only really goes with cool colours - hence brilliant with fuchsia, a bit yuck with coral, or mustard.

Floisme · 21/08/2014 18:40

I'm sorry but I can't get past this:

navy - ageing or classic?
KatherinaMinola · 21/08/2014 18:53

It really depends on the garment - it doesn't look frumpy on me, but I don't buy 'sensible' cuts in navy (think halternecks, racing backs, etc). I love it with pink, silver, or white. I sometimes wear it with red, and I think it can look good with a very cool lemon and even turquoise. Though I am not a fan of navy tights (except on DD). Or navy shoes (ditto).

Are there really many shades of navy? To me navy is quite a specific colour - not a synonym for dark blue.

KatherinaMinola · 21/08/2014 18:54

Oh, I tend to wear grey/anthracite type tights with navy for work.

WildBillfemale · 21/08/2014 19:17

Navy is much better than black for a lot of people however I do think it should be worn with caution, it's very easy to look 'cruise casual' if you wear it with white or red or god forbid both. It can also look very uniformy so I would avoid a Navy suit jacket unless it's a very feminine cut.

I love a classic Navy piece (skirt/trousers) worn with orange or purple or grass green and nude/tan accessories.

TSSDNCOP · 21/08/2014 19:20

I like navy but only when it's almost black - even a hint towards royal blue is to be avoided to avoid frumpiness < looking at YOU M&S with your iffy colour charts>

KatherinaMinola · 21/08/2014 19:22

I sometimes wear it with red AND white, but I don't look cruise casual. I look like an art student Smile

SirChenjin · 21/08/2014 20:42

KatherinaMinola - is that grey opaque tights? What colour of shoes do you wear with grey/anthracite tights?

TSSDNCOP · 21/08/2014 20:54

Straying into Traffic Warden Chic with the grey tights Grin
