navy - ageing or classic?

Am struggling with this having bought a few items of navy clothing recently. I'm mid 30s btw.

Black kills me now which is a bugger as it used to be all i wore
as i have aged black now wears me and throws rotten light on my ancient face
navy all the way

ohbladee · 20/08/2014 00:30

Classic. Lovely with greys and even some black!

I'd love a navy winter coat.

CointreauVersial · 20/08/2014 00:37

I didn't have a single navy item in my wardrobe until a couple of years ago, but I'm getting much more into it. It does suit me, and I don't think it's any more aging than any other colour.

It's the accessorising that I find difficult, particularly in the winter. I often wear opaque tights at work, and don't think black ones work with navy clothes, do they? And nearly all of my shoes and boots are black; I really struggle to find nice navy shoes.

Summer is OK because of my extensive sandal collection. Grin

ThinkIveBeenHacked · 20/08/2014 00:55

Im 29 and mainly wear navy. I also have a bit of grey, purple, white and black but my colour of choice and what I wear the most of is navy.

I pulled out my shoe box the other day and I appear to have all my shoes in navy - at least one pair of Toms, Converse, Heels, loafers, ballet flats and flip flops.

No navy bags though. Always tan. Oh and a grey polkadot canvas satchel type.

MrsMarcJacobs · 20/08/2014 03:16

Depends on the garment - I love navy with white and red - it looks fresh.

baskingseals · 20/08/2014 05:45

I am obsessed with navy. Any colour as long as it's navy.

Floisme · 20/08/2014 05:56

But it's only classic or timeless if it suits you and we don't know if it suits the op.

foxinthebox · 20/08/2014 06:03

Love navy. Have several Navy work dresses and and two new pairs of patent shoes. The LK Bennet ones are Smart.

LadyWithLapdog · 20/08/2014 06:26

I didn't wear navy till last summer when I had 'my colours done' and found to be a HOC Winter. Now I don't know how I didn't see it before. It suits me (and grey/charcoal even more!).

Chottie · 20/08/2014 06:48

Another vote for navy. Black is too hard and aging for me. My colouring is blonde hair and greenish eyes with a light tan.

50ShadesOfSummer · 20/08/2014 07:02

Sage: I don't like navy - also due to the fact that my school uniform was that colour and I hated it!

Perhaps I'll try it again sometime.

Pinkfrocks · 20/08/2014 07:10

I did a lot of navy in my 30s and early 40s but have now ditched it in favour of grey with black bottoms IYSWIM so it's not near my face ( am 50s)

I think navy is lovely for younger women but can look frumpy on us older birds.

noddyholder · 20/08/2014 08:07

I found I couldn't wear black in my early 40s but now late 40s it suits me again and I can't get enough

MrsCampbellBlack · 20/08/2014 09:39

I don't think the colour or any colour is frumpy - more the style surely?

I mean clarks navy court shoes - yes maybe not a great look if teamed with flesh coloured tights and a navy next skirt suit.

But I have some great navy shoes that are not at all frumpy.

I wear black opaques and shoes with navy dresses but I think navy and black look good together and am not a fan of navy tights.

noddyholder · 20/08/2014 09:43

I agree it looks v stylish with black but not keen on it with beige

AndIFeedEmGunpowder · 20/08/2014 09:46

I love navy and black too.

MrsCampbellBlack · 20/08/2014 09:50

I don't really do beige. Love it with bright pink as well.

Girlsbrigadewashorrible · 20/08/2014 11:43

I love navy and am gradually swapping it for my black clothes. I do think it can look a bit corporate though if it's part of suit for example. I prefer to wear it on a more casual basis, such as cropped leg trousers and long drapey knitwear. I do struggle to buy navy shoes though. I bought a pair of suede heels in Clarks last year and I have a navy patent flat loafer from Zara but I would really like some navy boots.

Girlsbrigadewashorrible · 20/08/2014 11:48

Also I agree that navy opaque tights don't always look quite right, although I have bought them before in Primark and M + S. I think the skirt length really matters with opaque tights though - anything longer than knee length looks frumpy, whatever your age.

noddyholder · 20/08/2014 13:10

Oh no I love mid calf skirts look really modern!

ChablisChic · 20/08/2014 13:18

Another one here put off by a navy school uniform (more than 40 years ago and I still can't stand it).

I don't think it suits me and think it looks boring. I have a couple of navy and cream breton tops but that's absolutely enough for me. As with all S&B topics though, it's so personal, and dependent on what suits the individual.

polyhymnia · 20/08/2014 13:39

Love navy - it's the main basic in my wardrobe. But wouldn't go out clad in top to toe navy, so tend to wear grey or tan shoes with it.
Do have a bit of a block on navy bags -seem just too sensible, but I do have a couple none the less - mainly for wearing with colours other than navy ( eg mid-blue or grey or green based prints)

ouryve · 20/08/2014 13:41

Just plain boring.

And I've ended up buying a bit of it, this year, because there's not been much out there that's good with my colouring.

scarletforya · 20/08/2014 13:46

I've replaced all my black with navy too. So now it's my base wardrobe colour.

I don't think grey hours with navy at all though. I never mix bases like grey/brown/navy/black ......Big no no!

sweetnessandlite · 20/08/2014 13:46

It depends on the item of clothing.

Something with simple lines, in navy can look really classy and expensive (and young)

Kate Middleton wears a lot of navy, (when she dresses casually) - and it looks stunning on her.
