Hi all.. , several of us on S&B have been posting about our clothese spending ( we know thatis what S&B is about [smile}.

We have wardrobes and chest of drawers utterlyand totally rammed...

We have piles of clothese we've even forgotten we have,(some with the lables still on )

We obsessively peruse S&B looking at recommendations (and then buy them, just because there are there)

We have no willpower,(yet Wink)

We are a friend to every online shop and discount offer going..(not to mention credit card companies)

We just cannot resist sales..

Our postmen and women and the local couriers are getting to know us better than our friends and neighbours..

BUT we want toget back into control and just enjoy what we have to wear.

To this end We the Undersigned PLEDGE to a NO spend August on clothes bags, accessories and shoes (and also make up and beauty products if that is your weakness)

The ONLY exceptions will be tights, basic underwear (knickers and bras) and to replace something that has Genuinley worn out..

It will be hard .. It will be tough.. We will have to be accountable to each other ..BUT WE CAN DO IT!

So Who's in? Smile

Sign up below .. (and try and resist spending for the rest of July.. this is NOT atime to stock up before too late!!)..

those who sign up wil be prepared check in here regularily

(A tyrant ain't I? Grin

Greengardenpixie · 30/07/2014 10:56

Thank you!!
Posting the white stuff crops this afternoon and then venturing over to next to put in ALL my returns!!! I have a large shopper full!! It will be hard not to look but im going to do it!!

CoconutAmericano · 30/07/2014 11:02

In, out, treat yourself to a nice coffee as a reward for not mooching round the store!!

Greengardenpixie · 30/07/2014 11:04

Laska42 · 30/07/2014 13:47

Well done for posting the dress back! coconut
Greengarden did you survive Next?

All Can I have an opinion on buying stuff in charity shops just for the sewing fabric? (but obviously to make other things with )

I have, im afraid, just bought a (far too small) sundress in lovely fabric in a charity shop to make into a skirt ( i want to practise using and hopefully getting better on my sewing machine).. .

I do have at least a black sack full of stuff to donate back .. Ok I know im pushing it here and justifiyng especially after being very stern last night . (its still July though ! )

So tell me what you think? Can I do this in August also or am I limited to playing with things I already have? Ill be ok with that if you say so as I do have a few things that can be re-sewn as experiments (esp if i dont all take it to the charity shop!)

Saurus, the market stall analogy is brilliant. Will use that. I already ask myself if I'm just buying an item for fantasy cocktail nights/posh dinners and that works

Greengardenpixie · 30/07/2014 17:20

I did, walked in browsed and then walked out with nothing.
Went into matalan...my mum had something to return..almost bought a tee but put it back!!!
I would say that clothes are clothes laska and you may replace your addiction to spending on clothes to spending on charity clothes...but of course it is up to you. It could be a midway point for your. Personally its only for a month so i would say no to myself. Its clear..no spending in charity shops or ebay for that matter.
The only thing that i bought was 2 jackets for my ds at £7.00 each...out of matalan. One for now and one for a couple of years away because they were such a bargain. You cant even barely get one jacket for £15.

Greengardenpixie · 30/07/2014 17:21

These are quality winter jackets too..not spit through type!

Laska42 · 30/07/2014 17:57

Ok greengardenpixie ill go with that.. no more charity shop for me until September ! .. (but not taking back the thing I bought today though .. its already cut up!) ill donate something extra ..One in one out then . Ill be good.

though I have remodelled an old Boden dress that I felt was looking a bit 'mumsy' rather than throwing it out..(didnt wear it at all last summer for that very reason.) Took off the sleeves and shortened it,, wore it to work today and got compliments on my 'new' dress. Actually it was the first thing i ever bought from Boden all those years ago.and have worn it to work loads of times before .. so am feeling a bit smuggidy about that ..

Greengardenpixie · 30/07/2014 18:18

Thats great laska..well done to you :) Wish i could remodel some of my clothes...very creative!! You could actually make a few skirts out of dresses!!! I remember doing that once. It can actually work well. You can make a skirt from jeans too..i saw it online.

CoconutAmericano · 30/07/2014 18:28

laska you gave me much needed tough love yesterday so I shall return the favour Grin. No charity shop shopping in August! I think you should practise upcycling your clothes with the fabric you already have for August and then come September you will be skilled enough to buy more charity shop clothes to upcycle.

Well done green for resisting buying yourself clothes today. Ok ok so you bought for the kiddies. I think that's ok? I will have to buy dd1 a new school uniform in August. I'm not considering that part of the vow of abstinence.
So far so good today ladies. Dh off work tonight so will be drinking wine and watching a movie Columbo instead of online shopping Grin

Greengardenpixie · 30/07/2014 18:32

Well it is a necessity for him really. I also need to buy my dd a new winter jacket and both need school shoes. Are you from Scotland coconut? My kids go back to school in August too..actually in a couple of weeks!!

CoconutAmericano · 30/07/2014 18:33

No Dublin Smile

masterprocrastinator · 30/07/2014 18:40

Hello fellow non-shoppers, glad to have stumbled across this thread, I am up for a no spend august. The fact that this concept is scary suggests I might have shopaholism big time.

Charity shops as mentioned above are my biggest challenge. How can I pass the bargains by? My current wardrobe is an overflowing mess. Here's to finding the strength to do this!

CoconutAmericano · 30/07/2014 18:44

Welcome aboard master. I have no decent advice for you since my addiction is to online shopping Blush but yes you're right, if the prospect of no shopping in August is scary you are well and truly in deep Grin. Meet your sister Blush

Laska42 · 30/07/2014 18:53

.. Several of your sisters! Welcome masterprocrastinator

We are getting used to tough love here..Can you take it? And give it also? (we need all the help we can get) because we are all weak and scared

OP posts:
Greengardenpixie · 30/07/2014 18:58

What can i do if i miss it though? I do like shopping :(
Do you know what, analysing it here..what stopped me today from buying anything...well for me...it was looking at something and picturing it in my wardrobe and it just lying there like all the rest. I had clarity today. It was just a piece of clothing afterall. It was not going to really make me happy..it was a bit like stopping smoking..what i used to hang on when i stopped many years ago was that first drag making me feel sick then a feeling of letting myself down and the fact that i would have to go through the agony of withdrawing from it all over again.

Laska42 · 30/07/2014 19:01

Yes, We do need a tactic for August 1st.. (and onwards) .. Posting photos of the great things we found in our wardrobes? Or the new ways we are wearing them? Take up macrame maybe?

(and no i'm not planning on going out with my knickers on my head.. )

I havent sorted my stuff out yet .. that will take several evenings ..

OP posts:
Greengardenpixie · 30/07/2014 19:05

ha ha ha...laska..now that could start a trend!!!
I have sorted all my stuff out. i do it regularly. I always ebay to pay for my purchases. I am going to ebay and save the money. I made over £300 last month for my holiday a few weeks ago.

Laska42 · 30/07/2014 19:05

Get out in the evenings - do a fast walk maybe , get a bit fitter? ? .. We are only comitting to a Month at the moment greengarden, we can survive one month .. (im not thinking any further.. although I would like tobe able to continue into Autumn and beyond if i can ,, I have so much stuff..)

OP posts:
Laska42 · 30/07/2014 19:07

Ive got a bit jaded with ebay selling (stuff sells for so little , people complaining and expecting used stuff to be new condition even when clearly marked ) .. I will put some of the better things on though..

OP posts:
Greengardenpixie · 30/07/2014 19:08

White stuff, toast, seasalt all do well on ebay. I can give tips for you if you like.

Greengardenpixie · 30/07/2014 19:10

Oh yes, its annoying when people expect things to be totally unworn when you have said used condition. The worst i had was when i was in a hurry i posted a w.s. top and got a complaint that it was crushed and they wanted a discount..so i asked them to return it at their cost. Which they did. I think it didnt fit. I relisted it and got more for it!!!

CoconutAmericano · 30/07/2014 19:11

I am planning on a few evening power walks as dh is off the next 4 evenings so I'm free to just put on my joggers and leg it out of the door.
