Are you fat?

There are so many threads on here where people say 'I'm a size 8 but I feel flabby' or 'no wonder teenagers have a poor body image when people who are size 16 or 18 think they're big'
I'm a big 16. I am 5 ft nearly 5 and weigh just under 14 stone.
I feel less fat than I did 3 stone ago, I would class myself as chubby but my fatness doesn't turn heads.
So... Do you think you're fat?

Amazing Trazzle how different we all are. I'm a size 14 when I weigh 11stone!

lostblonde86 · 08/07/2014 07:36

Yes I am, I'm 5"7 and weigh 13.2 I'm a hour glass shape but chunky tighs. Size 12-14 Blush people say I don't look my weight, I take it they are being nice

PinkSquash · 08/07/2014 07:36

I'm 5'10, 12st12 and I am fat. I am fat since I gave up smoking but I'm trying to eat better and exercise more and I've lost just over a stone (in 3.5 months). The top half of my body is fairly slender. All my weight is on my hips, bum and thighs and I struggle to lose it from there.

ziggiestardust · 08/07/2014 07:37

I am 178cm tall and weigh 78kg. Technically a bit overweight BMI wise, but I'm totally happy with the way I look. Totally. I go to the gym 4-5 times per week to work out, I try to eat well 80% of the time and I wear a size 12 dress and top but a size 12 or 14 bottom, depending on where I shop.

I have an hourglass shape and I like it. It's taken me a long time, but I really do like it now! If I want a snickers bar, I'll have one.

FloozeyLoozey · 08/07/2014 07:39

Currently weigh 14st 4lbs, lost 22lbs recently, currently about a dress size 14/16/18 depending on the shop and the item of clothing. My target is 11stone which doesn't sound that slim for my height and is bmi overweight but I look slim and wear a size 10 at that size (carry a lot of weight on my boobs and hips but slim everywhere else). I couldn't sustain a weight lower than that for very long.

Fairylea · 08/07/2014 07:40

I think some women are just never happy with their bodies though.. me being one of them.

When I was a size 8-10 I didn't wear anything too short or too tight etc because I still didn't like my shape. I thought I was very pear shaped and my skin was too pale etc etc etc.

Now my current size 16 ish I'm thinking what the hell was I thinking?! I should have been out in the daisy dukes every day!

But how you feel about your body isn't rational. Ironically I have more body confidence now I'm in my mid 30s size 16-18 than I did when I was about 19 and a size 8.

FloozeyLoozey · 08/07/2014 07:41

And I'm 5ft 5.

AggressiveBunting · 08/07/2014 07:44

No. 5'7'', 10 st 4lbs, size 10.

I'm currently trying to lose a "vanity 10" as I do heavy lifting and want to strip the surface fat off to show my muscles off more, and also to give me a bit more speed on my other hobby which is trail running (race season coming up). Appreciate that a lot of muscle is a bit of a niche taste on a woman but I really like the look and the feel, so I dont mind if other people don't.

Badvoc2 · 08/07/2014 07:44

I'm 5.5 Nd weight 10 stone.
I am hourglass shape and a size 12/medium.
Big boobs....32ff and quite big thighs because I am totally Untoned.

Thumbcat · 08/07/2014 07:46

No. I used to be, but I did something about it and now I look fabulous Wink

ICanHearYou · 08/07/2014 07:50

I know what you mean though OP, I open threads on here of people saying 'I really need to shift this weight' and when it is someone saying they are 11st and the same height as me, it makes my heart drop a little bit.

TulipOHare · 08/07/2014 07:53

I'm not fat, not objectively, but I'm out of shape and I do often feel fat / hefty / chunky. I'm 5'6" and 9.5 stone but pear-shaped, so about a 10 top but a good 12 on the bottom. When I was a smoker (gave up last year) I was a size smaller all over and I am finding it hard to adjust, having been slim all my life and pinged back after the DCs. It's just that I don't feel like me at this size.

KittyandTeal · 08/07/2014 07:56

I'm 5'3'' and 10.10. I'm a size 12.

I have always had body image issues and have battled various eds. Ironically I feel less fat now than I did when I was a size 8.

The change is that I eat cleanly now and go to the gym so am much more toned and less wobbly. I also think that the regular exercise has improved my mental health and therefore me body image!

settingsitting · 08/07/2014 07:57

No. Never have been. I edge towards larger than I should be sometimes, then do something about it.
I have my own internal boundaries, and when I am getting too close, I sort it out.
I put my mind to it to do it though. I mean that I am going to sort it out and do.

Currently I am very much at my lower end. I intend to stay there because I havew discovered this time when having lost weight, that I could lose more weight than I thought and still be ok.

SuperScribbler · 08/07/2014 08:25

I'm 5ft6 and weigh 8st10. I wear a dress size 8/10/12. I feel slimmish, but not extravagantly so. I prefer to be below 8st7. At my heaviest I have been 11st (20years ago). At 19 I was 7st7. I am now 45 and need to work harder to stay slim.

I am aware that my body image/perception can be quite skewed at times. I have also noticed that my perception of other people's weight/size is affected by my own size. For example I have watched Bridget Jones film as a bigger woman and also as a smaller woman. As a bigger woman I thought Renee Z looked pretty slim in the part. As a slimmer woman I thought she looked beefy.

RiverTam · 08/07/2014 08:30

yes. I am 5'2 and weight pushing 10 stone and am a size 12/14. For a very petite, short woman, that's fat. No big bones, no muscle - just fat. And flabby. And my own fault and problem!

StepAwayFromTheEcclesCakes · 08/07/2014 08:35

I am a big girl, 5ft 4 and 13.6 I have lost 2 and a half stone and trying to lose more. I no longer look flabby and fat but am still big. No idea what size clthes I am as I have 20's, 18's, 16's and some old 14's that I am wearing at the moment, very confusing. What I find interesting is how someone same height can weigh 10st and look big? when I was 10.7 years ago I looked ill! there is also a woman at work who weighs 19.4 but does not look much bigger than me... how does this weight business work eh. I think I will know when I get to a weight I am happy with, feel loads better for losing so far though and am loving clothes shopping again.

highlandflingabout · 08/07/2014 08:39

Yeah, I have got fat again, not huge but too big. I am also pretty fit walk an hour plus every day.

I often lose 2-3 stone and then gain it back, I am prone to being excessive with everything, work, food, exercise. I really ,really like food too, find it really hard to deny myself anything.

If it had no effect on my health I would be quite happy to stay this size am 5'10 and a size 18.I would really like to keep off the weight and stay even at a size 16 forever.

kaykayblue · 08/07/2014 08:41

No I'm not. I'm 5 foot 9 and 9 stone, so just in the "healthy" weight range. But I think it's a little more complicated between "fat vs not fat".

I know I'm not overweight by any stretch of the imagination, but I still feel "bigger" than I am entirely comfortable with, as I've put on about half a stone in the last year. It's not a lot, but it's enough so that I can't fit into about half of my clothes any more. And I can't afford to buy new ones. I was probably too thin before (I was in four sports clubs and had a busy job on top of that) but it's what I was used to!

I think there are two other issues overall as well:

  1. Women often use "I'm so fat" as a sort of catch all phrase to mean "I'm not happy with my body". It's not exactly what they mean, but sort of gets the message across without going into detail. Like someone a perfectly healthy weight could say "I've gotten so fat" but what they actually mean is that their cellulite has got worse. Or someone could say it and mean that they think their stomach is really flabby.

  2. A lot of it depends on a persons' natural frame - I have a very small frame and don't carry excess weight well AT ALL. That said, someone else could be exactly my height, three stone heavier than me, and look roughly the same weight as me, if they have a bigger frame (bigger hips and way bigger boobs). Some people can get to very low BMI's and still be completely healthy and look fine - others can only get to a mid range normal BMI before they start looking gaunt and drawn.

You can't just say "Well I'm your height and 12 stone and I look great, so you must look great too" or vice versa. It's different for everybody.

Dontgotosleep · 08/07/2014 08:42

Yes. I'm size 24, but I couldn't care less. Don't get me wrong as a teenager I tried every diet going, but as I've got older I've refused to let the scales rule my life. Society can love and accept me for what and who I am or not love and accept me at all. X

CornChips · 08/07/2014 08:43

I think I am. I am 5 ft and weigh 11 stone. I am a medium-large size 14 (M&CO sizings).

whattheseithakasmean · 08/07/2014 08:46

I am lucky because not only am I slim - I actually feel slim. I am pretty confident about my body & I think I am in great shape for my age (late 40s).

I am 5'1" and weight 8 stone (well, a bit under, usually). I am very physically active, so very fit and relatively toned. I have a squishy tummy, but I really don't care about that. I think I look pretty damn hot and my DH thinks I am sex on legs - he has always liked the petite, sporty look, which I exemplify.

As another poster said, I wish I could bottle my body confidence to distribute as a gift. I don't know why I don't have the usual female bodily self hatred, but I suspect it is all the exercise.

Also, being small, I have never had a chance of looking like the tall, graceful, supermodel/celeb ideal so perhaps because I have never been able to aspire that, I have never felt I fell short, so to speak.

StrumpersPlunkett · 08/07/2014 08:46

I have scales that tell me my body fat and currently I have 7 stone of fat on my 15 stone frame.

That us an unhealthy fat level and I am processing how I got into this state and how to get out of it properly (ie not just starving myself)

Am I happy day to day? Yes I love my life and an very content. I would like to be less fat though.

SinglePringle · 08/07/2014 08:47

Not anymore.

I'm 5'8 and weigh 10st. I wear a size 10 / 12 in shops like Top Shop and Zara and am told I'm slim. I do have a tendency to carry weight around my stomach an since I used to be 4st heavier, the skin there is a little flabby.

However, I work out most days - sometimes twice a day - ding Bootcamps and reformer Pilates so I know I am in good shape health wise. I'm strong - which is something I like. I have a seriously cracking pair of legs!

I wok hard at it and enjoy the results. Although I can get a little bit too regimental about food...

Fab41 · 08/07/2014 08:47

I feel fat and too heavy. I am 5'5" and weigh 11stone 13.
I wear a size 14, occasionally 12. Big boobs, 32FF.
I used to run, and was just over 10 stone then. I have fibromyalgia now, and being unable to run or do aerobic exercise really affects me. I have also put on weight with medications.
Hard to accept that is how things are now, but I really hate the whole dieting industry. I find it difficult not to overeat when I am at home all day on my own.
