I hear you Dry! Can you usually just walk in and try them on then? Thing is I'm not even sure I want a long dress. I would hate to be uncomfortable and the whole thing of going to the toilet in it would be a worry Blush Grin

Stokey that sounds so beautiful, I'm picturing it in my head. You're so right about it being a once in a lifetime thing. I'm a very practical person though, not romantic at all sadly.

QueenCardigan · 21/07/2014 20:42

blair you can never bore me with wedding dresses. Surprisingly as I'm usually such a cheapskate and hate the thought of clothes getting ruined, I my parents splashed a grand on my dress (a lot bearing in mind it's 10 years ago) and I totally trashed it by dancing so much Grin. It was about the second or third I tried on and I knew it was the one. I kind of knew what I wanted and this was exactly it. I think you need to book at most places to try on. Shoes were cheap cream sling backs from BHS costing a tenner. Didn't need a bra as the bodice was corseted but had cream plants and hold ups.

liberty happy belated birthday xx

Drywhiteplease · 21/07/2014 20:48

Blair my sis wore a Dior New Look style dress, just below the knee, prom style skirt, nipped in waist with some Loubs she then dyed black. No veil. Just beautiful, retro chic. Lovely.i could find the name of her dress maker London based

BlairWaldorfLovesShopping · 21/07/2014 21:02

Yes please Dry every little helps while I'm still completely clueless about what I want/what to do :) Dyeing Loubs after the event sounds like my kind of thing too!

Good to know the fear of wasting money can be got over QueenC Grin

Will get googling dress shops near me...

Drywhiteplease · 21/07/2014 21:05

Usually have to make an app Blair

santamarianovella · 21/07/2014 21:05

blair I was like that, but my parents convinced me that it's once in a lifetime experience, and it has to be perfect . And yes it's just for once, but it does live with you in photos, and you get to see it very often, so you want to choose a timeless understated one and those sadly cost a fortune,my mum's wedding dress was stunning and even though it has a very 70s feel to it, with long sleeves lace, it still looks beautiful 35 years later,
Mine was only available at Vera wang and had to fly to get it fitted, ( I was very spoiled back then, there are lots of perks for being an only daughter)it wasn't custom made, but they had to do a lot of alterations, for bust and length, and it still costed a fortune!

Fedupnagging · 21/07/2014 21:21

First things first, Happy Birthday to Marsha and belated Happy Birthday to Liberty Wine and Thanks to both of you.

Knew you would opt to orange Marsha. It really is very lovely.

Sleep, you look fab in that top and lovely maxi dress Mara.

Topaz, hope you had a fab holiday.

Amber Thanks hope things improve for you soon.

I really liked the pewter clutch some one posted earlier - was it you Queen

Fedupnagging · 21/07/2014 21:30

Oops, posted too soon.

Blair, I spent hours trying on wedding dresses in Liberty's - they had racks and racks of dresses all for just trying on - don't know if the department is still there but no doubt someone will know. We then bought cream raw silk from there and DM made my dress. I loved it.

The Boden catalogue arrived here today too but am not quite ready to look through it! Nice links though Dry

Sorry if I missed anyone out but I have just rushed catching up!

BrandyAlexander · 21/07/2014 21:36

I think the most important thing in wedding dresses is to pick something you just love whether you spend £50, £500 or £5,000 but don't bankrupt yourself for it. I love(d) my dress so much!Smile I took the "it's a once in a lifetime, the photos are there forever and I just want to look and feel amazing on this one day" approach. It was couture so I had 8 fittings in total. It fit like a glove and was just perfect. It was also really simple so no way you would look at it and reconcile the cost but the money was all spent in the way it fitted, and the concealed corsetry.

A tip for you....When I went wedding dress shopping, I took my oldest girlfriend who is basically a tomboy with no interest in clothes. She gave me a totally unbiased opinion based on what I looked good in, rather than her tastes. She was a saint ruddy marvellous. I had done plenty of research and actually decided on what dress I wanted. Found the dress went to see the designer at the showroom. I then tried on that dress. Loved it. Then over the next 4 weekends, visited different designer showrooms and tried on another 49 dresses. I chose the first one!Grin

BlairWaldorfLovesShopping · 21/07/2014 21:47

santa I think once I start talking to my mum about it she will be the same. She is paying Blush and my wedding will be the first in her family for 23 years. Envy of Vera Wang, I bet it was stunning.

fedup aww your mum making the dress is so lovely!

novice your dress sounds perfect. (It's frustrating not being able to see actual pics of all these gorgeous dresses! Wink) I think I would trust my sister to be objective - though we have very different styles, she knows me the best :)

GrumpyOldHorsewoman · 21/07/2014 21:53

Evening, lovely Ladies.

Afraid I can't contribute to wedding dress chat - the whole wedding dress thing passed me by a bit - I bought mine in one trip to Liberty - "That one will do". My wedding was 1920s themed and my mum made my (floor length)veil and beaded headdress, my bouquet was (another mum-made) bunch of long stemmed Calla lilies tied with ivory silk ribbon - very simple.

I'm just dipping in here for a couple of pieces of advice.

Firstly, I saw a girl with a Midnight blue Mulberry Effie small satchel over the weekend and I'm now obsessed but, typically, can't find one. I can find the small one in black, brown etc and I can get midnight blue in the large size, but no joy on a small blue one (even on Mulberry's website) - any suggestions? (Already tried ebay)

Secondly, how do I copy and paste links on a MacBook? It's unfamiliar to me and the usual 'right-clicking' doesn't work. Tried to link the bag and can't.

I am a useless bugger.

QueenCardigan · 21/07/2014 21:58

Hi grumpy. I'm sure I saw some blue mulberry bags in john Lewis today but they don't seem to have blue ones online. Not sure whether they were the Effie or not but if you have one local might be worth checkng?

BlairWaldorfLovesShopping · 21/07/2014 21:59

Hi Grumpy - had a look and found the large size on Selfridges but you're right, the small one seems to be nowhere to be found. Must be a past season colour? :(

1920s themed wedding sounds glorious - alas the dresses wouldn't suit me at all, although I love the style of the 20s and 30s.

Drywhiteplease · 21/07/2014 22:02

Have just blubbed through last Paris episode of SATC!! Brilliant stuff.

QueenCardigan · 21/07/2014 22:03

Just looking at it in selfridges website. Bloody gorgeous. I don't think that was the one they had in john Lewis.

OneLittleLady · 21/07/2014 22:05

Dp is away all week so I expect I'll be grumpy and needy. I guess it's all just preparation for the big leap forward though. All this wedding dress talk is exciting, I love wedding dresses!

santamarianovella · 21/07/2014 22:20

blair yes be careful with who you bring along for fittings ,I feel not a lot of girlfriends give honest opinions, my mum and dad (yes he came too) and my aunt were the only people who came along, and one of the fitting ladies told me that its a good choice to bring family instead of friends, as according to her, some friends, married or not feel really envious and somehow want to make the bride not look her best on her wedding day, strange !

Ohh! dry which part made you cry? For me its charlotte and Harry! I cry every time I see that adoption scene,

santamarianovella · 21/07/2014 22:21

We are here for you one Smile

OneLittleLady · 21/07/2014 22:27

thanks Santa i know you all are Smile Thanks

Turquoiseblue · 21/07/2014 22:27

Another one that can't be bored with wedding talk so link away! you ll be begging us to shut up -I really loved my wedding dress. It was a one of two made in that style by a designer I loved her style and designs . I fell in love when I tried it on, it was wonderful. I think dd could wear it, maybe she might like it, ,ah be not either. Dh teases me about it and the ring saga still.

A friend of mine did a trash the dress photo shoot after her wedding - at local forest / river it was really cool, (the dress was truly trashed, and it was a VW). Anyone here done one or considered it ? I didn't I threaten to wear it when we renew our vows! poor dh

Liberty, I missed that it was your birthday too. Hope you had a nice one (every-birthday is a celebration - 40+1 is still fabulous! Did you get all you wanted from your wish list?

Grumpy, hope you find the Essie. Sorry no help though.

Fedupnagging · 21/07/2014 22:40

Grumpy, sorry, cant help on the bag front or the macbook. But, your wedding dress sounds lovely.

Turq, it would be lovely if your dd could wear your dress -could be the start of a family heirloom and all future daughters will wear it.

Novice has very sensible advice about choosing the dress you love. Although, 49 shops? What a marathon!

shopafrolic · 21/07/2014 22:42

Grumpy try calling the Mulberry outlet stores in Bicester and or Shepton Mallet (sp?). They usually hold last season's stock.
Blair there are wedding pics on my FB page if you want a nose, but definitely try on lots. I started by trying a meringue type huge dress, a more A line shape, and a straight dress. Once I knew the best shape, I went from there. I sold my dress afterwards and bought a garden bench!

BlairWaldorfLovesShopping · 21/07/2014 22:44

OMG turq no! I couldn't do it. The thought of it makes me feel a bit urgh.

One yes just come and chat if you feel down, I feel like I have free rein to witter on about dresses now Grin

Drywhiteplease · 21/07/2014 22:45

My dd tried on my dress last year, it fit her perfectly. Now she's too tall and bustyAngry for it Grin

BrandyAlexander · 21/07/2014 22:47

Thanks For One

No not 49 shops, 49 other dresses, only to get back to dress 1Grin

Yesterday, dh hung up the canvas print of a silhouette view of us on our wedding day in our dressing room. I can see it from my bed and it's making me smile. Hope you feel the same way about your dress Blair.Smile
