Yes, I find cropped far easier to wear. I've got a lovely longline navy one from Hobbs and practically never wear it because it just doesn't work for me, whereas I wear a super-cheap cropped black one over and over again.

kikidee · 07/08/2014 16:40

Brillenbar I like that BR belted pointe shift - I spotted it yesterday when I went on to look at the Mouret things. There was only one dress I liked and it was not available in my size. All hype and not much substance if you ask me.

I love the Boden T bar flats too that we're in your blogpost Belinda but I am not purchasing without a 20% off code. I have heard the Bistro trousers in normal length might be good for work so I will be trying nice code appears.

Autograph beige pointed flats update is that they have been broken in a bit and are no longer so uncomfortable

BelindaAllWorkedOut · 07/08/2014 17:34

AF44 gets you 15% off plus free delivery, kikidee - I just ordered ballets for the DDs, this morning, using that.

Glad the nude flats are working out - they do look great. As do the berry/wine and black suede versions.

I just tried the Roland Mouret dresses on - they are thick, and cut well, but are unlined and meant to be worn right. I look a bit "obvious" in tight clothing, and I can't bear how it feels. So, it's not for me and I'm not sure it could be worn as workwear, unless you buy a larger size. However, it's cut to be tight, so a larger size risks looking odd. I tried some other things on, too, so will blog them.

Am I mad - I have the BR Ninah pumps in snakeskin on hold. Reduced from £85 to £20. Sounds great. BUT they are size 7.5 and in BR I am a US 8.5. They feel a little tight, but OK. Think I will go back and buy them and wear them w socks. They are too high to be walking shoes anyway. This goes against everything I ever normally say about shoes!

kikidee · 07/08/2014 18:32

Thanks Belinda. Johnnie has sent me a £10 gift voucher for my birthday so I am good to go!

lurkingaround · 07/08/2014 19:43

I've done that Belinda not long ago, with &otherstories flats. About a half size too small but the size up was too big and they were such a bargain! They survived the thick socks stretching thing v well.

Have to catch up on this thread now!

ISpyPlumPie · 09/08/2014 14:02

Have just stumbled upon this thread and am very grateful as my work clothes desperately need updating. Ordered the Mango dress mentioned upthread and managed to get a Planet jacket in John Lewis sale. Can't wait for them to arrive.

BelindaAllWorkedOut · 09/08/2014 21:36

ISpy - I hope the Mango dress works for you! And hopefully you can report back on the Planet jacket, too?

DH brought the Banana Republic heels home last night, so need to pull on some socks and wear them, to stretch them out.

margaritasbythesea · 10/08/2014 08:54

Jumping back on. I'm off to London for a holiday this week and am very excited about actually trying on real clothes.

I'm looking for a grey or possibly coloured hip length straight wool coat, not double breasted. I've seen similar called boyfriend coats or car coats, although everything else under the sun seems to be called that too. Anyone seen anything similar?

BelindaAllWorkedOut · 10/08/2014 12:25

Like this Autograph one? It's blue grey and wool mix, though.

BelindaAllWorkedOut · 10/08/2014 12:26

Holiday in London w child free time to try on clothes sounds fantastic, margaritas

margaritasbythesea · 10/08/2014 12:44

Ooo yes. That's worth a try on. Have you seen it in RL? Collar looks potentially odd but otherwise good.

Holiday is a reward for my husband having been in another country for stretches of 6 weeks at a time most of the year, but yes, I am champing at the bit!

Bearleigh · 10/08/2014 16:11

Hi all - just back from holidays in the back of beyond, so I popped into the Jigsaw in our local town, to ease myself back into normal life. Jigsaw has really improved recently, I think. I am still banning myself from buying anything black, but am tempted to flout it, because this is a lovely little dress:

www.jigsaw-online.com/products/heavy-crepe-ponte-panel-dress-9177

It looks much more expensive than it is - very good quality material, and with nice seam details. It's mostly cotton.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 10/08/2014 16:32

That's lovely, Bear. Too long for little me though.

Not workwear at all, but can I please post my beautiful new jacket here so I can show it off to people who I know will understand it?!

Brillenbar · 10/08/2014 16:44

Remus that is a lovely classy jacket. And you could wear it dress down Friday? Or just enjoy it at the weekends. Really lovely interesting neutral colour.

Also non workwear I bought this for the autumn www.whistles.com/women/limited-edition/leather/lauren-a-line-skirt.html?dwvar_lauren-a-line-skirt_color=Black#start=1. It is very beautiful. Any ideas on footwear other than sky high stilettos which is what those skirts always seem to be teamed with on Pinterest? I thought these www.marksandspencer.com/leather-block-heel-chelsea-boots-with-insolia/p/p22309957 but that got a less than positive reception elsewhere ...

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 10/08/2014 16:51

We don't have such lovely things as dress down Fridays!

Nice skirt. I'd wear it with grey or tan heeled ankle boots as I think black could look a bit too Nanny Ogg, on me at least. I like these

Brillenbar · 10/08/2014 18:42

We didn't have dress down Fridays either. But now we do, but you have to pay to dress down. And have a suit in the office incase of surprise client meeting. And a very strict dress down code ( which includes "no crop tops "ffs honestly it's a law firm, who'd ever turn up in something midriff revealing sounds more like wishful thinking on behalf of management!)

I have grey suede ash boots and also some similar tan ankle boots to those you linked to so will try with those. Thanks Remus

MaryMarigold · 10/08/2014 19:21

Hi all, just checking in again.

Thanks for all the lovely advice on how to accessorise navy. Typically I went for black in the end but will bear in mind for the future!

Have ended up with:

Black 100% wool shift dress suit (Hobbs)
Black bird print jersey dress (Phase Eight - was recommended to me upthread - I love it!)
Raspberry cap sleeve jersey twist dress (Phase Eight)
Black cotton mix pencil skirt that Belinda linked to on a different thread the other day (Gap)
Black cotton mix skinny trousers (Gap)
Dusky pink Ravello top (Boden - seen via the work wear edit capsule wardrobe post)
Nude Autograph flats (also recommended by someone here)

Have got black heels already, still looking for a couple more tops and maybe another dress.

Overall I'm very happy with my wardrobe and I wouldn't have found half of those things without this thread/Belinda's blog, so thank you all Thanks

MaryMarigold · 10/08/2014 19:22

God another name change fail. I was Thepurplepenguin Blush

MaryMarigold · 10/08/2014 19:24

Brillen one of my colleagues was wearing a backless dress and flip flops last dress down Friday so you never know...

Merriboo · 10/08/2014 19:42

Bearleigh do it! Grin that looks lovely and worth a little flout!
Remus sighhh, adore your jacket- cut & colour make it such a classic- love it!!

Brillenbar amazing bargain! Not sure the shoes do the skirt justice though.

this has done sterling work since I got it. I can recommend this I think it's going to work well going into autumn so I tempted to get the aubergine as well.

BelindaAllWorkedOut · 10/08/2014 19:48

I worked in Sydney in a law firm, and let's just say that there were a few people who needed a leetle reminder not to flash too much flesh. Norty lawyers. Mind you, at my last firm, here in London, everyone dressed more conservatively, so perhaps it varies from place to place, as well as country to country (the Sydneysiders do wear less, which if had forgotten about, so was quite buttoned up, in comparison, when I went back).

Remus - I love your jacket, it looks gorgeous.

margaritas - yes, I've seen the coat in real life (I took the photo I posted) and thought it looked lovely. However, I've not tried it on. If you have children, having a DH away for 6 week chunks must be very, umm "trying" (my wine bill would be sky high).

Bearleigh - I love that Jigsaw dress - will have to include it on my Pinterest boards.

Brillenbar - that Whistles skirt looks fab. I'm wearing something similar, but in cotton (as an aside, DH hates it). I think that as the skirt is quite covering and almost voluminous, you need minimal looking shoes like nude shoes or strappy sandals if sky high heels aren't for you, and also, a fitted top. I am wearing my black midi skirt w a slim fitting black top and I usually also wear black ankle strap sandals with it (they are mid heel). The grey or taupe boots could work well.

purplepenguin - well done, it sounds like you have bought a great set of staples. Must be nice to have that sorted!

Merriboo · 10/08/2014 19:48

MaryMarigold ohh sounds like a fab haul!
How are you finding the nude flats? I got a pair ages ago but didn't get on with them (foot surgery ) so consigned them to the wardrobe. Do they soften up and become more comfy? I'm cautious about what I wear these days but still have a major shoe thing.

BelindaAllWorkedOut · 10/08/2014 19:51

meriboo - that red dress looks just beautiful, and I love a white jacket.

Brillenbar · 10/08/2014 20:01

Do remember hearing that national Australia bank had a dress code in london that contained the rule "no thongs" - something lost in translation I hope!

Whistles skirt is a new length for me but will give it a go with various tops once it's cooler. Might end up having to get it shortened. Will see

Meriboo I have a similar white jacket and I love it. Have been vaguely looking for winter white winter workwear. Not sure it will actually be right when it's actually grey and cold but still

I am in Spain ATM and have the special treat of actually going into a zara tomorrow. Hoping they have autumn stuff in and not end of sale tat

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 10/08/2014 20:06

I really like full midi length skirts. I wear them to work a lot with these shoes and a cropped jacket or for weekends with a biker or cropped denim jacket and these boots or these, Not at all fashionable I'm sure - but it's a look I like, and that (I think) quite suits me.

Like the shape of that white jacket, but I can't wear white unless it's as a pattern, or a stripe. Next dress = a lovely colour.
