Style blogs for the over forties

Ladyfoxglove · 15/06/2014 16:39

I'm the wrong side of forty and although not mad about fashion, I like to look my best and make an effort.

Now, I've seen plenty of blog references here and I love 'does my bum look 40 in this' but the thing is, I live on the Staffs/Cheshire border and the 'London look' is a bit too edgy for a lot of people here (plus, I'm too fat to pull it off) so can anyone recommend any suitable style blogs?

ive had a look at Pinterest but can't find anything. Everything seems to be very edgy and young, sigh. Am I beyond hope?

Following this thread with interest as I'm just starting my second adoption leave and I got into a real clothes rut with my first - when it was all jeans, jeans, jeans (mainly boyfriend) and long sleeved t-shirts.

This time it being rather warm I'm wearing knee length shorts and short sleeved t-shirts. Gosh, what a change! I do have some t-shirt dresses (not the straight-up-and-down type, just t-shirt material) and I have lost a LOT of weight running around after a toddler/pushing the buggy everywhere/obsessively using MyFitnessPal so I'm a rather different shape.

So those are all reasons why someone might want to reinvent their style in their 40s.

I am SO excited to have discovered midlifechic as I recognise some of the places she goes, I'll have to see if I spot her ever!

PS there will be no white trousers in my new wardrobe...

SirChenjin · 18/06/2014 13:20

I have white trousers in my wardrobe and I luffs them - and they're linen Grin

drspouse · 18/06/2014 16:40

I loved them before I had a toddler...

lurkingaround · 18/06/2014 17:27

Have just caught up with this thread.
I totally ADORE Poppy's style!! She's nothing like me (5'6", pear) but I love that blog. I would wear, um, none of what she wears, but I love the blog. It's so....

I do have a bit of envy for her endless budget, fab closet space, and her amazing legs. And I really admire her chutzpah. She gets it wrong but y'know, we all do.
I must check out some of the blogs mentioned that I don't know. But I do get bored so very easily with blogs. 1 woman, 1 wardrobe, there's only so much....

SirChenjin · 18/06/2014 20:41

Ahhhh - I get you now, I thought I was unwittingly committing a massive fashion faux pas . No, white trousers and toddlers don't mix well sadly Grin

KarlWrenbury · 19/06/2014 06:35

Is poppy on holiday to Guantanamo ? You cheeky enablers ;)

MrsEboJones76 · 19/06/2014 07:28

Poppy fan here. She doesn't seem to take herself, or fashion, too seriously. I like the frivolity of her blog. That's what I want when I'm reading on the train after a draining day at work. I also love her piercings.

I like does my bum lady too but she's way taller than me and my budget is way smaller than hers. But I like her writing style.

The blog I seem to go back to most is All Worn Out (eve). Whilst her style is not identicle to mine, I'm a fan of the ripped jean, the birkenstock, a little bit of leopard print.

I use WIT for inspiration.

I'm late 30s now and I think really I know what works for me: I'm all about classic items but with a quirky twist. I wear lots of fitted shirts to work with slim chinos or a pencil skirt, Or skinny cashmere crew necks. I like a pointy heel. For casual weekends I like scruffy jeans, striped tops, birkenstocks or converse.

KarlWrenbury · 19/06/2014 07:42

...the bloggers uniform then? Wink

ab987 · 19/06/2014 08:03

Surely in your 40s you should have developed your own style? Not want to emulate someone else's?
I'm 50+ and would never consider looking at anyone's blog for ideas. I know what suits me and as I've made an effort to stay trim size 10 I don't think of there being clothes for the under 40s, over 40s or anything. I don't want to look like a teenager or mutton and I don't want to wear CC or Alexon, but there's plenty in the middle- skinny-ish straight jeans, capri style in summer, or T shirts and nice cardis, tunics in winter with thick tights and boots. I buy mainly from the White Company in winter, and bits from Boden ( plain only), white stuff, Jigsaw, Uniqlo ( great for jeans and T shirts) etc.

SirChenjin · 19/06/2014 08:10

Who said emulate?

And that's fine if blogs aren't for you - but there are some of us who like looking for ideas, whether that's in magazines or online. The clothes you've described as the sort of thing you wear are pretty much what you'll see on the over forty blogs, ironically enough.

dexter73 · 19/06/2014 08:20

I don't try and emulate someones style but sometimes I see a different colour combination or wearing a stripy top with a lace skirt that I wouldn't have thought of and like the look. It's more inspiration for me as I tend to stick to tried and tested clothes/combinations and play it a bit safe.

nipersvest · 19/06/2014 11:18

totally agree about the style bloggers uniform thing. do they all get emails so they're all in sync?

this month its ripped jeans
this month its new balance trainers
this month its skater shoes which i loathe
this month its fugly sandals

SirChenjin · 19/06/2014 12:31

That's just fashion though, innit? Go to the High Street and every window you walk past will remind you what's in or out that month. You just pick and choose though - no-one (whether it's the magazine or the bloggers or whatever) can force you to wear something though, and more fool you if you follow fashion slavishly.

noddyholder · 19/06/2014 12:47

Style and fashion totally different. I think its a natural thing

SirChenjin · 19/06/2014 13:59

I agree - which is why some blogs are better than others. I wouldn't look at the high fashion ones for inspiration or ideas, but I would look at the ones that I consider stylish.

sassytheFIRST · 19/06/2014 14:03

Btw, what are skater shoes? Seeing this everywhere but flummoxed what it means. Are they Vans?

A57 · 19/06/2014 14:15

Not sure if this will get reported or deleted but Avenue 57 is an outfit sharing website for women 40+ (not exclusively though) and it's FULL of women of all sizes and styles. I genuinely want others to be inspired and to post what they where to inspire others

I also write a blog. I appreciate I'm a size 10 in dress but I am 40+ and I have a VERY limited budget!

A57 · 19/06/2014 14:17

@sassytheFIRST - slip on trainers, just like Vans yes! www.clarks.co.uk/p/26101799

noddyholder · 19/06/2014 14:24

I am not keen on those too many stinky pairs in my hall over the years

SirChenjin · 19/06/2014 14:32

Is that what skater shoes are?? God, they are awful things - who decided they were fashionable/stylish??

frillyskirt · 19/06/2014 14:52

I'm 40, here is my pinterest: www.pinterest.com/lapindelune/

(Oh, i am using my other name here, my old forum name is ToastedTeacakes, not that anyone knows me or anything, heh)

noddyholder · 19/06/2014 15:24

That pic of dave gilmour has made me come over all unnecessary

SirChenjin · 19/06/2014 17:00

I like that Avenue57 blog - you can select outfits on the basis of body bits you don't like. It would be good if the initial photos were a bit bigger though - you have to click on small thumbnails in order to see the outfit in more detail, but it's good to see what similar body shapes are wearing (although there are some women who are hyper critical and very obviously do not have big bums Grin)

lurkingaround · 19/06/2014 18:33

frillyskirt I love your Instagram and pinterest! It's really good. Love it. Never knew you were a MNer! Nice to put a 'face' to your work!
