Style blogs for the over forties

I'm the wrong side of forty and although not mad about fashion, I like to look my best and make an effort.

Now, I've seen plenty of blog references here and I love 'does my bum look 40 in this' but the thing is, I live on the Staffs/Cheshire border and the 'London look' is a bit too edgy for a lot of people here (plus, I'm too fat to pull it off) so can anyone recommend any suitable style blogs?

ive had a look at Pinterest but can't find anything. Everything seems to be very edgy and young, sigh. Am I beyond hope?

Fuck I hate blogs. With your bloody front doors and pops of cunting colour and manic days and comedy names for husbands

Algorta · 17/06/2014 07:24

Is there really any point though? The bloggers may be wearing nice clothes and have groomed hair but they still look like middle-aged mums. And while there's nothing wrong with that, the only people who are going to be looking and thinking " Ooh, she looks good/stylish/hot" are other middle-aged mums. Or OAPs.

AmberNectarine · 17/06/2014 07:30

Lolz at Karl

KarlWrenbury · 17/06/2014 07:59

yours is a rare exception AN Wink

SirChenjin · 17/06/2014 08:05

And what is wrong with middle aged women looking? I presume that's who is supposed to look Confused

Floisme · 17/06/2014 08:27

That's right Algorta Middle aged mums are allowed to like clothes too. So are OAPs even.

nipersvest · 17/06/2014 08:29

i like does my bum look 40, but her budget is unreal. she's promoting the mantra of sticking to buying a limited number of pieces each month but then slips in a new handbag worth ££££££ Envy

MrPop · 17/06/2014 08:54

Poppy's style might be an inverted triangle?? (Sorry not quite sure what shape that is, like an apple shape?). I know she polarises opinion but I admire her adventurous spirit.

Scarletohello · 17/06/2014 09:00

Wtf, jumpsuits? Just no...

Scarletohello · 17/06/2014 09:01

And surely by your 40s you know what suits you by now don't you..?

Algorta · 17/06/2014 09:17

I suppose what I'm wondering is whether wearing fashionable clothes, jewellery etc is actually making me any more attractive given that I'm a middle-aged woman. When I look around me at the other women my age I can see that many have made a real effort with clothes, highlighted hair etc but I do feel it's a bit of a lost cause. Because who is looking?

dexter73 · 17/06/2014 09:20

I make the effort because I look at myself and I like to look nice. Also my dh looks at me too!

nipersvest · 17/06/2014 09:29

i make an effort for me! don't really give a stuff what others, or even dh think, i do it for me. i'm 44, don't have a huge budget, and don't really follow fashion trends, i don't even wear make up, but i do prefer to like and feel good in what i wear.

noddyholder · 17/06/2014 09:37

Iim 49 and bought a jumpsuit this week had so many compliments really flattering and stylish it's from Zara. I don't subscribe to the age thing at all and without looking ridiculous still wear what I want . Mostly gap and zara fir day and I liked vintage and mango too plus the odd expensive thing. I like doesmybum blog too

noddyholder · 17/06/2014 09:40

There are loads of over 40s in the public eye who look good still and because they have access to a lot of clothes/stylists they are a good bet. I wear atoned down version of a few of those! For me being slimmer gives more choice

SirChenjin · 17/06/2014 11:21

I like to dress for me - and like to think that I'm not exactly past it at 45, nor do I look like a dog's arse.

As for knowing what suits me - nope, the complete opposite. My body shape is changing, as is my hair colour and my lifestyle - I go into shops sometimes and feel utterly overhwhelmed and depressed. I'm not quite ready for Per Una, nor am I ever going to wear harem pants (as a pear shaped five foot one!) - so end up feeling lost on the High Street. I know what I like, certainly, but it's good to get inspiration via blogs that don't assume that I'm a SAHM with oodles of cash and a social life that involves going to gallery openings or chi chi bars.

noddyholder · 17/06/2014 12:26

Exactly

Algorta · 17/06/2014 13:26

Poppy of Poppy's Style Blog! The whole blog's a piss-take surely.

Algorta · 17/06/2014 13:27

I've never seen it before but it's horribly compelling.

SunnySideOfTheStreet · 17/06/2014 13:31

Funnily enough Poppy is one of the few blogs I still follow. I don't always like her clothes, in fact we are very, very different but the reason I am still following her is that I like her positivity, enthusiasm and "pleasing myself" attitude. Would be a sad old world if we all aspired to the same old, same old like safe old me.

Floisme · 17/06/2014 14:27

I don't agree with you Algorta but I kind of see where you're coming from. I'm in my late 50s and I know for a fact that young people don't look at me that much any more. But I'm with nipersvest in that I don't give a toss. I make an effort because I enjoy it and intend to look as good as I can for as long as I can. For me.

And Grinat knowing what suits you. Maybe you do in your 40s but, once you come out of the menopause, you'll probably have a different body shape and have to work it out all over again. I expect I'll have to do it again in my 60s too but it keeps things interesting.

KarlWrenbury · 17/06/2014 16:33

That poppy blog. She so needs to realise she's an overweight woman of 40.
Not a 18 yo in London. So so wrong.

Gillybobs · 17/06/2014 16:44

The Poppy's style blog frequently makes me go WTF to the point where I stopped following her. Her style is a bit wacky/mutton IMO and when she posts pics of her feet I almost faint Grin check them out if you dare.... BUT I think good on anyone who puts themselves out there like that, I really admire anyone who puts the time and effort into a blog and if they were all identical we'd be on here moaning about lack of individuality.

My current fave is My fashionable 40s although I wish she wore less black.

Remus your pins are fab btw

noddyholder · 17/06/2014 16:48

My fashionable 40s looks pretty much how a lot of my friends do

dexter73 · 17/06/2014 16:52

I quite like Poppy's style as she just wears what she likes. Sometimes she wears things that really don't suit her (grey dress) but sometimes she looks fabulous (jumpsuit).
