Cremo - :)
we are planning to host a longest day party next weekend - much stress from me and dp will disseminate the garden in preparation (a good thing!!)
I actually like hosting in a bizarre masochistic way...

WIBU to book myself a week's holiday on my own when the DDs have gone back to school? Grin The house we usually stay in, in Normandy, is free the first week in September, but DD1 goes back to school towards the end of August and I think she would have quite a bit to say if we went there without her.

DH said to leave it - we will get something at the last minute...

Quite tempted to stay with friends in Scotland actually.

Crem - We both thought Edinburgh was lovely and the Uni seemed great too, although like in so many Universities the Medical School is quite a way out and isolated from the hub of things... Since it was the first Open Day we've been to nothing to compare it with yet...

Winterfell was, erm rather spectacular for aficionados of the series. Lots of ooing and aahing and taking of candid shots of The throne .
There was a 3d video glasses bit which was great: I particularly liked the costumes which were beautifully crafted.
As the nerds fans a queued up in front of me they were all studying a series of wall pennants of all the clans. They were all mouthing, Stark, Lannister, blah blah under their breath as they filed past, like toddlers learning new words. Snurk.Grin

My work colleague brought his baby son into work for half an hour so I got to squish his lovely chubby toes and do knee bouncing. SmileSmileSmile

Shame the med dept is out of town QQ. That's a bummer. Geographically we are so much closer to Edinburgh than you are in Landahn.

Herbs I will try to find you on fb and send a friend request. As with Finchley, I am near 'The Suburb' as it tends to be called. Know it well although could never have afforded to live there!!!
My parents live close to Temple Fortune...it's just the Finchley road, really.
Dsis arriving from the US of A tomorrow. Staying with the aged ones...not me. I'm very fond of her but she IS a right nut job. Can only take so much if it. Got last minute tix to see Once in the West End tomorrow night with DH. Has any one seen it?
Goodness, DD has been away for a week. Where's the time gone?

I like Edinburgh (it's not far for us), but was rather surprised when I went in December at how poor it seemed in contrast to Newcastle - I hadn't been for years. Still a lovely place, but it was the shops which appeared to be not so good along Princes Street. A friend's son is an architect in the area and it was very badly hit in the recession.

Friend arrives tomorrow afternoon and is here until Friday; I have loads of things planned. I enjoy having visitors as long as they muck in.

Blimey NU if you think Edinburgh is run down don't come to Belfast.Grin

Can't wait to see Newcastle if you think Edinburgh is a bit down at heel NU! I honestly thought it seemed pretty prosperous and thriving - although we only tramped all around the pretty central bits.

Rosebag I'm a thistle if you would like to include me on FB (and the same to any others of you that I've missed).

Walked a couple of miles with DD, DH and DDog; first time since spraining my foot four weeks ago. It's improved a lot in last week. Aching now, though.

Spent half an hour showing Mum how to make a call on her new phone. I'd printed out short, simple instructions, in large type, with a pic of the phone and big arrows pointing to the right buttons. But she wouldn't attempt to follow the instructions without me there. After a struggle, she spoke to my brother and one of my sisters. The phone links wirelessly with her hearing aids and she can have a proper conversation on it for the first time in five years. Could be good, if she'll use it.

DH's Fathers' Day card is always home-made with a new pic of DD. She and I had the traditional secret photo-shoot yesterday, with good results but in the end I used one of her singing her Italian solo at a rehearsal, since it was such a special occasion for all of us.

So, no excitement here but that's good. I'm still a maybe for the meet-up. Turns out I'll be working in Crawley so should be possible Grin.

Auriga, you are one step closer than I am. I bought Dad a special mobile phone for the blind, but it sits there on the kitchen side completely unused! Still I bought him a new beach towel for Fathers Day which I know will get used. He still swims in the English Channel every summers day!

I think Edinburgh has been completely wrecked by the tramway - went back after many years last summer and I think Princes Street has been destroyed! Newcastle also very rearranged since I was at uni. Percy Street doesn't seem to run all the way down any more and turns into a multiplex. Not sure I liked this. Either uni would be great for medicine.

First day of the French bac today. Philosophy urgh - glad it's not me.

Crem Grin at GoT nerds -have to say we enjoy it but not to that extent. There is far too much gratuitous sex and violence for me . DH, of course objects much less to the unnecessary nudity. I'm more House of Cards myself.

Backtracking furiously - I think I was surprised that there were empty shops on the main street, if you see what I mean. As I said I hadn't been to Edinburgh for years, and I just didn't expect that. Of course there are run down areas in Newcastle. I love the way we have large green areas (the Town Moors) and the Quayside is stunning these days. I even have a fondness for the way the football stadium looms over the city centre.

Which uni is DC looking at, QQ? Let me know if I can help at all. I do know, though, that often students come up here to study and then don't leave afterwards, so be warned. We have several friends who are/were lecturers at Newcastle.

Toothache is now a bit better, so I am hoping I have weathered the storm.

Oh Lalsy - poor thing probably nerves. I actually gave DD an antihistamine to help her sleep - a sort of non addictive alternative to sleeping tablets. I hope she's OK for her exam.

Lalsy fingers crossed your DD is OK and good luck to both her and Hatty's DD.

My DD actually left for school on time despite getting out of bed late after a busy weekendShock

Aw, thank you all. I wondered about nerves but actually think we both ate something indigestibly on Friday (I'll spare you my reasoning). Just hope she's not too tired. Poor love, her head was barely out of the loo before she started worrying about her university place.....

We have the main battery of exams this week - with English Lit and History orals right at the end of June. The uni places thing is very nerve wracking - I've been researching away weekends at her backup choice.

Orals in English Lit and History, urgh again.

dd pretty keen on her insurance choice, and the course is right up her street, but there is not a huge difference between the offers.

They'll all be fine, I am sure, we just have to hold our nerve [links arms with Hatty and Crem].

Good luck everyone who has exams.

Here it's all back to normal with dp doing a mega long day Hmm

Ds had a fab weekend - sleep over, horse riding..... all good fun.
The mother of the girl he is friends with is a bit surprised at their friendship (her dd is not academically minded at all unlike ds), but there is clearly something there and I do hope they can remain friends as they grow up and move on to Secondary.
