I don't buy high end make up anymore. I might be completely wrong, but I've come to think that there's no need. Am I deluded?

S&G body stuff stinks, but their make up is good. I like their lipsticks.

No,not deluded. I buy high end stuff cos I like it, need has nothing to do with it!

Talking of which , if anyone is interested in a serum bargain, I bought the new Nivea Q10 'pearls' one on special offer recently - am impressed and it's only £13.99 which is v reasonable.

Another post about bargainous serums cos I've just remembered another good cheapie - Body shop vit e in oil, costs £13 but you can usually get it for less with a discount. I use 3-4 drops mixed in my night cream. Lovely stuff.

I like the Santuary one. Not as good as Decleor but miles cheaper.

Salli Hughes is paid bribed with samples to recommend the products she does. It's disappointing but true. You can't believe anything you read in the fashion/beauty pages it's one big scam. Friends in the industry have told me time and time again.

I really like the fact SH isn't afraid to say something doesn't work for her, which for me is the key difference from a lot of other beauty journos. She's also very clear when blog posts are sponsored like the one linked to earlier. Firmly Team Sali over here.

Agree - Team Sali over here too. Loving her book and about to press BUY on a load of stuff while Debenhams have got 10% off beauty...

Well of course she gets free stuff, she's a beauty editor. Don't all people in her line of work?

The difference is, I think, she's paid by the Guardian and not sponsored/paid by individual companies.

Of course she gets sent stuff to test and write about. I think the key difference is that The Guardian is not reliant on beauty advertising to stay afloat like the glossies are - if a magazine wrote a poor review (or gave no editorial) to a brand and they pulled their ads it would be a disaster. In some cases the magazine's ad spend is directly linked to editorial coverage, therefore the coverage is generally going to be positive.

flippin - so you don't think its necessary to buy expensive make up and potions? I'm sceptical and tight fisted, in general, but if it actually is necessary to buy high end products, then I'd like to know, so I buy products that work or look as well as they should. It's just hard to know, and I've def had some budget beauty & skincare buys that have looked or felt better for me than the expensive stuff I was buying (eg M&S Age Repair moisturiser is better for me than Clinique, Maybelline Color Drama lip pencils are better for me than the NARS lip pencils). So, now, I just buy budget / drugstore stuff.

Anyway... Re serums, I am currently using, and like, the M&S age repair serum. If the Soap and Glory doesn't work out, I'll go back to that. I just threw the Body Shop serum in Vit E oil out - it gave me pimples. Which I didn't even get as a teenager. It has lots of fragrance and other stuff added, so that could be why.

I think I will buy some high end lipsticks, though, as I'll enjoy looking at and using their gorgeous packaging when I pull them out of my handbag.

If anyone else is a drugstore beauty fiend, I like Alix from I Covet Thee's posts and recommendations www.icovetthee.com/2015/01/drugstore-make-up-favourites.html

Well I'm not an expert (just an enthusiastic amateur Smile) but no I don't think it's necessary.

Buy what you can afford and what you like is my motto.

One of the best finds I've had recently is W7 eye shadow palletes.
Got it off Amazon for about £6.

It is a dupe for the naked pallete.
It seriously lasts all day without budging.

I bought Estee Lauder gentle 'acid' toner on her recommendation ( via Mumsnet!!!) - Perfectly Clean, summit like that- and it is like paint stripper. There is no way it is suitable for any skin, let alone sensitive and bordering on dry. Complete waste of £22.

I think sometimes she just trawls the web and comes up with a few new products to add to her column- I don't believe she has tested them all or even investigated the ingredients- EL toner is almost pure alcohol.

I quite like her - I think she writes well and have bought several of her recommendations and been pleased with them. However, lately I think she isn't paying enough attention to her column and I am beginning to wonder if she has got too busy with her new interests to really do justice to it. It always seems very hurried, too short and less personal.
