Sorry I belonged to Mua too (makeupalley) they're great but I got very tired of the fawning over various products and ranges. Latest MAC collection lets buy it all!

But at least they're not paid to write good reviews.

MyrtleDove · 13/06/2014 21:57

I was in her FB group and I found her massively patronising and pretty rude at times. I have a very different skin type and look to her so I don't bother following her stuff.

I must say that Mumsnet S&B is a far nicer and less cliquey group than her fb group, btw.

Re beauty groups, MakeupAddiction on reddit is really good. Reddit has a very young audience so it may not be everyone's thing, and it's very US-based, but people are very friendly and helpful, and do great haul and swatch galleries. There's also a SkincareAddiction but I don't follow it, but it seems equally as good. I also like following Temptalia - Christine is lovely and does so many swatches! It is again very US based though so I mostly use it for brands like MAC or Revlon etc.

Makeup alley is very American

Myrtle I was in that Fb group too, and she was horrible to me - told me to leave because I disagreed with her political stance on something. The rest of them weren't much better. I loathed the fawning over her every bullshit pronouncement.

However, I do like Nars Orgasm, I'll give her that one.

squoosh · 14/06/2014 01:09

Interesting, I was a member of the FB group and really enjoyed it, lots of witty, helpful members I thought.

But then it moved to her website and became a bit more staid.

LevenshulmeLass · 28/02/2015 18:33

I just can't take to this woman. Agree with some of the other post, I too find her lofty, patronising and dismissive of all but her own views. I do like the column though, some excellent tips however not much to suit the average budget.

Turquoiseblue · 01/03/2015 07:07

I like her find, I like her video clips and find some advice helpful, like MN, I m not going to rush out and try everything she recommends but I do feel she s good at what she does.

ihatethecold · 01/03/2015 07:41

So what works for dehydrated skin then please?

Ellisisland · 01/03/2015 08:12

I'm not a massive fan either though I did love her videos with Marian Keyes but that was more because of Marian.

Does anyone know her problem with Lisa Elridge ? I have read it several times that she doesn't like her andeft her out of articles about british make up artists etc but no reasons why. And I'm nosey Grin

squoosh "ain't no Tracey's" just made me snort my tea out! Wonder if that's part of their recruitment slogan !

madmomma · 01/03/2015 08:30

How can anyone have a problem with Lisa Eldridge?! She's brilliant, and manages to nor be irritating or patronising.

MilkThistle187 · 01/03/2015 10:50

Really?! I LOVE Lisa Eldridge, she seems lovely. I am quite lukewarm about Sali though

BelindaAllWorkedOut · 01/03/2015 11:25

I like Sali's column a lot, and have seen her speak a couple of times, and found her an impressive speaker. I also find her more dignified than the you tubers, and like that she recommends a range of products, for varying skin types and budgets. She has said that she isn't paid to promote things, but is also sent masses of products, for free. So she can assess most, if not all, products on the market, with no thought / bias as to cost (eg don't we all hope and pray that the £££ product we bought, really does deliver miracles).

I've just ordered the Soap and Glory serum, based on her recommendation. Fingers crossed.

BelindaAllWorkedOut · 01/03/2015 11:26

Lisa Eldridge also seems lovely.

Datahub · 01/03/2015 13:08

soap and glory honks, doesn't, it?

Datahub · 01/03/2015 13:08

i must say that the Clarins concealer Hughsie recommended is VERY good

jasmine1979 · 01/03/2015 13:49

Regarding Sali Hughes and Lisa Eldridge, I think it's maybe because Sali is good friends with Pixiwoo, Caroline Hirons etc.
Pixiwoo, went through a stage where they were being accused (possibly rightly) of copying Lisa Eldridges tutorials. Sometimes almost word for word, the week after Lisa uploaded hers.
From memory I think there was a acne covering tutorial that sparked the initial anger, and at one stage I think Lisa also got upset about them then copying her website design and finally tweeted something about being upset about it.
found it here.
"Seriously thinking of stopping putting up videos on youtube as my background, poster frame style, content, personal make-up philosophy and just about everything else is now being completely ripped off..... wish they would get their own ideas..."
www.facebook.com/lisaeldridgedotcom/posts/10151005282601416

Personally I love Lisa, and rate her highly above the rest of the people mentioned here.
I do like Sali, and love her "in the bathroom" videos. I don't find her recommendations to be great though, and if I'm honest don't think her style (hair, make-up and clothes) actually do her many favours a lot of the time. I bought her latest book and was pretty disappointed to be honest.

Notonaschoolnight · 01/03/2015 14:14

I like her I think mainly because she's a pale skinned brunette 40 year old like me so there's a good chance what she likes will suit me, I like Vivianna does make up for the same reason apart from her age, I'm prob old enought to be her mum, so far things I have bought on their recommendations have been successful the best being hourglass ambient light powder and Clarins instant concealer, the worst worst the Byterry concealer sali used to recommend, chalky pile of rubbish.

Saurus72 · 01/03/2015 14:27

I really like Sali Hughes - like others have said, I really like that she is a feminist and proud, pretty much always calls out cosmetics companies who are not producing colours for non Caucasian skin and also that she is a fairly serious 40 year old woman talking about beauty in a non-patronising way. I feel I can take her seriously. The last few of her recommendations I have bought (Clarins instant concealer, Dior primer, Clarins instant light tinted lip balm) have been absolutely fabulous and have changed my make up routine and appearance for the better.

BelindaAllWorkedOut · 01/03/2015 16:50

Datahub - I really hope not! I'm picking it up from Boots tomorrow, so will check. It's meant to perform well re line reducing etc, but I won't keep it if can't cope w the smell.

That Clarins concealer. Great if you can find a colour match. Good luck with only 3 options. no1 was too pale on me but 2 was too orange (let's not even talk about 3). The NARS creamy one is as nice texture and coverage wise and comes in a much better range of colours.

flippinada · 01/03/2015 19:21

I like Sali Hughes. Unlike some of the more popular youtubers and bloggers I think her opinion is trustworthy. Also like Lisa Eldridge, didn't know about the Pixiwoo stuff - interesting.

Sadly, most YouTube vids seem to be little more than paid advertorials these days.

flippinada · 01/03/2015 19:23

Belinda I've heard good things about the Soap and Glory stuff too.

I like High - end stuff as much as the next beauty junkie but there's nothing like a cheapo "find" Smile.

Datahub · 01/03/2015 20:34

i got 3 but think its too dark
