portly have we discussed career paths before, I am also starting my nursing in October. My mum and Dad are very into Jive and Swing weekend dances (which amuses my brother lots). I got into the fahion becasue it suits me, I am very curvy and pale have lots of tats and just love the way it looks. Same reason I started being a goth when I was a young un, becasue I am so pale that I realised I needed a fashion that made the pale look good.

Morning all! I am a recent c8nvert to 40s/50s style clothing. Live outside the UK so it's a challenege to find events. Am hoping to go to see Glenn Miller Orchestra in a few months and will be sporting my lady v swing dress with petticoat and pearls!

Got my Collectif trench in ice blue through yesterday (sent 14 back as it was too big) and it is beautiful!

Should get my Lady V day dresses and ivory petticoat today.

Have worn these dresses to work this week...

Oops, don't know why my links went at the top!

Has anyone ever been to Goodwood revival? My parents have been for the cars but not dressed up, butI would love to go!

I'm not brave enough to wear petticoats to work...am trying to gradually ease in my style! Always get comments when I wear swing skirts or the 2 dresses I linked above, but think a lot of that is because I'm quite a slob most of the time!

Hello there!! Yippee! I've been looking for a thread like this for ages. Basically, I really suit50s style clothes and would eventually like to phase out all my normal clothes and wear them exclusively as the suit my body shape far better than modern clothes. Does anyone have any advice on where to begin? I have 2 dresses and a few pencil skirts. What to buy next?
Thanks in advance.

Hi can I ask for advice ..

I have a hepburn dress ( Lady V) the black and red with roses . have a wedding to go to tomorrow - Have black petticoat from sohos. Black pumps heel with lace covering . Smart jacket has 3/4 sleeves shortish. What jewelry do I wear ???
I keep trying different things and all looks wrong!! I can do a mad dash to a shop if needed but don't want to spend ££££ as I do have a fair bit of stuff..

Mckayz · 28/03/2014 08:10

So pleased to have found this thread. I love all the 50's clothes, hairstyles etc. Even trying to persuade DH to let me redecorate the dining room to be a 50's diner style.

ThePortlyPinUp · 28/03/2014 08:18

Clarabumps I did that on my 30th birthday, I ebayed all of my regular clothes and replaced them with rockabilly/50's stuff. I love pencil skirts, tight sweaters, high waisted jeans and swing dresses for summer and nights out. I've recently bought a pair of dungarees and love them, was prepared for some piss taking but even the youngsters at college think they look pretty cool now Grin
Dita I knew we had chatted before but couldn't remember what about Blush How's it all going? I still need to get my occupational health form filled by a gp and sort out my jabs, I keep swinging between nerves and euphoria Grin

Portly! I love that name. I have 3 kids under 6 so my clothes are pretty much rags. I need to lose some weight but don't want to 'wait till I've lost a stone' then never do and look crap in the meantime. I wear 50s style make up every day so I just need to build up my wardrobe. Has anyone seen the vlogger Vintagious? She does loads of good hair tutorials on you tube. You should check her out. Be warned though, you will be watching them for hours. Grin

sunshine thank you .... will have a look and see if I can find anything similar locally.

ditavonteesed · 28/03/2014 09:15

I already work in nhs so have my jabs and occy health, although I guess I will have to do it again, trying to sort my bursary out at the moment, too confusing. I was hyper excited but it seems so long away now.

I love the headscarfs from lush. Have several alkl really fantastic colours. Need to find the perfect dress for my birthday party but leaving it a while as hopiung I may be a little smaller by then.

GetOnYourDancingShoes · 28/03/2014 10:22

Love 40s and 50s style clothes! DH is suited and booted for work and wears vintage cufflinks etc. so we often look like we are caught in time-warp. I have been trying to persuade him to learn to swing dance with me, he has got as far as looking for a class so I remain hopeful!

Her Vintage Life magazine has some good articles and hairstyle 'how-to's' ... waiting for this month's copy to drop through the door today Grin

DP would love to wear vintage but is a man giant so it's not happening Hmm

He does 'look vintagey' though, he also runs a business that is vintage compatible which is nice.

For those wanting to ditch the modern clothes, just make sure that you have plenty of casual wear. It's lovely looking glam all of the time but it'd drive you mad eventually.

The cheapest way for everyday (for me) is a pair of skinnies, ballet pumps and a gingham shirt/cropped bowling shirt/gypsy top. Half the time it's the hair and makeup that 'make' the look.

As for accessories to go with the black dress for the wedding, it's maybe too short notice today but if you get the chance take a look at some marcasite or French paste jewellery. It's blingy enough to lift the outfit but keeps it period Smile

autumnsmum · 28/03/2014 11:45

Mrs cumberbatch completely agree . Gingham shirts are a staple for me and leopard print cardis

HeirToTheIronThrone · 28/03/2014 13:07

So which of you would like to teach me to do proper flawless black flicky eyeliner. It is the saddest thing in my life that I can't. On my wedding day I said to the makeup lady that I essentially wanted to look like Amy Winehouse. It was ace Grin

Mckayz · 28/03/2014 13:18

What shoes do you wear if you aren't wearing heels? I can't walk in heels and I'm not really sure what to wear.

ThePortlyPinUp · 28/03/2014 13:31

I wear colour coordinating pumps, I can't dance otherwise. I'm hoping to have enough spending money at Hemsby this year to treat myself to a pair of rocket original saddle shoes to wear during the day with jeans.

These are the shoes, and this is me today, I actually wore pigtails outside of the house and no one pointed and laughed Grin

Heirtotheironthrone- eyeliner for me is all about the applicator.

Easiest one that I have used since day dot is Rimmel liquid liner- it's cheap but because if is a little brush rather than a pen it just glides over your eyelids rather than feeling like you have to 'push it'.

For everyday I do a very thin line around the upper eyelid with a small wing and for evening/vamp I start thinner at the inside of the eye and make the brushstroke wider as I go.
It's a bit more dramatic. I used to use it for everyday but felt like my face always looked the same for day or night and so I was losing the 'wow' factor Wink

Shoes, I like a nice summer sandal or Mary Jane. I can't wear heels often/or very high anymore since I tore my ACL (no more swing dancing for me!!) Shoes are easy though- you can walk into any high street store and there will be something that is vintage reproduction.

HeirToTheIronThrone · 28/03/2014 14:54

Ooh, thank you for the Rimmel tip!

I bought these shoes the other day - they are ever so comfy and look gorgeous with my 40s tea dresses!
