Top Five Make-Up Essentials for Normal Daily Wear

PavlovtheCat · 18/03/2014 21:14

Either, to put on before you head out, or what you take with you and top-up with through the day. What would you have to keep if you were to get rid of your entire make-up selection apart from those 5 essentials?

(Not including brushes etc and less than 5 if you don't need that many).

What make/colour do you use of those things? What age are you (not being ageist but I found I needed less/less good quality when younger), what is your skin tone/complexion type?

I am asking because I get a little bit overwhelmed by make-up, sometimes spend too much on the wrong things and still don't have what I feel is the full set of Must-Have's that I need to make me look glowing. I don't necessarily want to look hugely made up, but just to enhance my natural loveliness and hide my natural not-so-loveliness Grin

Every day I wear:
Tinted moisturiser
Concealer if needed that day.
I quick dust round of bronzer to liven me up - cheekbones, brow bone
A neutral eye shadow with a slight shimmer
Eye liner
Mascara
It takes me less than 5 mins but without it I look poorly Wink

butterfliesinmytummy · 18/03/2014 21:21

Concealer
Mineral powder make up
Mascara
Lip gloss
Eye liner pencil

EyelinerQueen · 18/03/2014 21:23

I am 33 with normal/dry skin.

Not counting my moisturiser my list would be......

Illamasqua Skin Base foundation
Collection 2000 Lasting Perfection Concealer
Rimmel Translucent Powder
Urban Decay Naked Palette
Max Factor 2000 Calorie Mascara
Benefit Dandelion blush
Benefit High Beam highlighter

And I would struggle not to include my Anastasia Brow Wiz and my Lancome gel eyeliner as well.

I don't really do barefaced Grin.

Saurus72 · 18/03/2014 21:29

I used to buy way more make-up than I do now, even though I have always worn it pretty much every day. I think I have just worked out through trial and error what works for me. Pretty much the only things I don't buy on a replacement basis, when things run out, are lip glosses/lipsticks, and nail polish, and I have far too many of both. I'm trying to use up my stock before buying anything new in those categories.

Anyway, top 5:

  1. Bobbi Brown metallic cream eyeshadow in Galaxy. Super easy to apply, stays put all day, perfect colour.
  1. Black waterproof mascara. Not particularly wedded to any particular one, currently using Bobbi Brown.
  1. Mac studio fix foundation.
  1. Boots No.7 translucent loose powder
  1. Clinique powder blush. Think it's called shy blush.

I also use lipgloss everyday - I really like Liz Earle, as the colours are lovely and it isn't 'jammy'.

BeaLola · 18/03/2014 21:29

Foundation or tinted moisuriser/BB cream depending on time of year.

Lipstick or gloss- probably a berry pink colour fairly natural and neutral lip pencil.

Powder for t zone in lovely compact -also handy as holds mirror.

Blusher - rosy natural colour, probably cream.

Of the above I would tend to take lipstick/gloss and powder out with me for top ups.

Brands I vary between - Bobbi Brown, by Terry, Chanel, Clarins.

I am 45.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 18/03/2014 21:31

Soap and Glory Foundation in The Fairest of Them All

Benetint

Urban Decay Naked

Lancome Definicils mascara

Either Porefessional or Beauty Flash Balm, unless I can find something cheaper!

Gillybobs · 18/03/2014 21:40

Liz earle foundation (that stuff is goooood)

Bobbi brown blusher in nectar or apricot

Soap and glory super cat liquid liner (doesn't budge)

Laura mercier metallic cream eyeshadow in alloy

Benefit they're real mascara

Costacoffeeplease · 18/03/2014 21:48

I'm 48, Laura Geller balance and brighten, either laura geller lipstick/gloss or clarins chubby stick, mascara, laura geller eye liner, clarins chubby stick for eyes or laura geller eye shadow

CecyHall · 18/03/2014 21:59

For me-

Foundation, currently using Revlon Colourstay the most
Concealer, the cheap but good Collection one
Blusher- Bourjois cream blush
Eyebrow powder
Eyeshadow, I use all sorts but if I could only have one I'd pick Maybelline Colour Tattoo in On and On Bronze
Mascara
A smidge of powder
A bit of lip colour, mostly the Loreal Glam Shine Stain splash or whatever long name it has

That's more than five but that's the minimum I like- if I could have more I'd have a bit of eye pencil, some highlighter, a bit of primer and maybe some bronzer.

foxdongle · 18/03/2014 22:07

for daytime - every day;
no17 eye shadow in a natural shade
L'Oreal mega volume mascara in black - I've tried loads but always go back to L'Oreal.
studio rosy coloured blusher
no 7 lipgloss in various nude/pinkybrownish shades
and in the late spring/summer a sweep of bronzer
I have normal skin.

ItsRoxie · 18/03/2014 22:07

Top five:
Tinted moisturiser/mineral foundation
Cream blusher
Eyebrow powder
Lipstain
Translucent powder

If I have more time: concealer, gel eyeliner, mascara, neutral eyeshadow. But I don't mind going out with bare eyes as long as my brows are done. Usually I put primer on underneath as well, and lip balm on top.

dannychampionoftheworld · 18/03/2014 22:13

In order of importance/necessity:

  1. Garnier BB cream
  2. Concealer, esp. under eyes (currently a Rimmell highlighterish one)
  3. Mascara - Maybelline one in pink/green bottle
  4. Lip balm and lipstick in neutral beigey or plum red
  5. Powder - No 7 compact
  6. Eyeshadow - a paler one all over lid and a darker one in the crease - currently L'Oreal three-palette.

And sunscreen moisturiser every day, factor 30.

I am really lazy about trying out/finding new brands.

Hippychickster · 18/03/2014 22:13

I am 49 and my 5 are:
Sunday Riley Effortless Breathable Primer
San Tropez Bronzer
Nars Blusher in Angelica
Black mascara

Actually that's only 4. If I can be bothered I use a bit of lip stain

Walnut8 · 18/03/2014 22:18

33 and sensitive/combo skin

Foundation - revlon cs for everyday (sand beige)
Blush - clinique powder (innocent peach)
Mascara - diorshow iconic overcurl

If I want to look a bit more done would add:
Estee lauder dw eyeliner
Nars bronzer in laguna
Lipgloss (pinky brown nudes from Mac, nars, dior)

And of im going to be photographed or going to something nice, id swap to lancome foundation, add stila paint pot in kitten and shadows. Smashbox primer in green corrector, maybe some loose mineral powder from laura mercier on nose, chin, forehead

KenDoddsDadsDog · 18/03/2014 22:20

I would choose
YSL Teint éclat
YSL touché éclat
YSL mascara
Mac lady blush Creme blush
Mac spite lipglass

thepurplepenguin · 18/03/2014 22:20

For me:

Tinted moisturiser (Laura Mercier/Liz Earle)
Blusher (Liz Earle/Sleek)
Mascara (any Max Factor)
Brow mascara (Maybelline) (I have shit brows!)
Browny pink lippie/gloss (Soap and Glory)

I would also struggle without concealer, both spot and under eye

thepurplepenguin · 18/03/2014 22:21

Oh and I'm 32 and have dehydrated combination skin

PavlovtheCat · 18/03/2014 22:29

brilliant, keep 'em coming!

OP posts:
Theonlyoneiknow · 18/03/2014 22:35

No7 BB cream
Bobbi brown under eye brighter
Benefit Brow zings
Mascara
Dark eyeliner

Am 42, normal skin but flush easily and horrible sparse eyebrows

flossy101 · 18/03/2014 22:55

1, Rimmel stay matte powder
2, mascara (currently benefit)
3, benetint cheek stain
4, concealer
5, benefit Brow zings eye brow powder

If I could add extra, I'd have a primer, Estée Lauder double wear light, urban decay naked 3 palette, revlon lip butters.

LulaPalooza · 18/03/2014 23:17

Clinique Even Better SPF20 foundation in 02 Fair
Bobbi Brown Corrector in Light Bisque
L'Oreal Telescopic Mascara in black
Smudge of pencil eyeliner, any dark shade, any brand
MAC blusher

I'm 42 with very fair skin and, until a couple of years ago, was v prone to spots. I have dark circles under my eyes and very uneven skin tone and thread veins so refuse to be seen in public without foundation and concealer

Can I also have some Nail Envy, Dior Nail Glow and Avoplex for my nails/ hands?

AmazingDisgrace · 18/03/2014 23:31

Missha CC cream
Loreal Translucide powder
Bobbi Brown gel eyeliner
Loreal volume million lashes mascara in Extra Black
Sleek eyebrow kit in dark brown

PavlovtheCat · 18/03/2014 23:32

lula are you me Shock apart from being a couple of years younger than you, you've just described me! Is the Bobbi Brown corrector used because it's the best you have found? or can you recommend others for dark circles. I am struggling to find anything that works.

OP posts:
iamamug · 18/03/2014 23:32

Estée Lauder double wear light, Estée Lauder powder blush, Mac eyeshadow palette in browns, Estée Lauder mascara and a slick of lipstick.
I use beauty flash balm underneath if I want a real lift, otherwise moisturiser.
The whole thing takes 5 minutes with good brushes.
I am 50 with good olive skin.
Many years of expensive mistakes means I ow buy less but much better quality.

AmazingDisgrace · 18/03/2014 23:34

I'd add in Bare Minerals Well Rested eye concealer, Smashbox smokebox palette, Max Factor whipped cream foundation and Nuxe lip balm if not restricted to 5
