Top Five Make-Up Essentials for Normal Daily Wear

PavlovtheCat · 18/03/2014 21:14

Either, to put on before you head out, or what you take with you and top-up with through the day. What would you have to keep if you were to get rid of your entire make-up selection apart from those 5 essentials?

(Not including brushes etc and less than 5 if you don't need that many).

What make/colour do you use of those things? What age are you (not being ageist but I found I needed less/less good quality when younger), what is your skin tone/complexion type?

I am asking because I get a little bit overwhelmed by make-up, sometimes spend too much on the wrong things and still don't have what I feel is the full set of Must-Have's that I need to make me look glowing. I don't necessarily want to look hugely made up, but just to enhance my natural loveliness and hide my natural not-so-loveliness Grin

shoeprincess2 · 19/03/2014 07:36

I am 37. The 5 products I use are:-

  1. Suqqu foundation
  2. L'oreal brow artist
  3. Chanel Illusion d'Ombre in Illusoire (and use as a liner on lower lashes too)
  4. NARS Orgasm blusher
  5. NARS light reflective powder

I'll keep a lipstick/ tinted gloss about my person. Have no particular favourite- depends on my mood. In fact, I have plenty of eyeshdows, blushers and liners too, but the above are my staples.

Crutchlow35 · 19/03/2014 08:08

Normal skin age 43 and I use

Lancome Teint Visionnaire - it is a concealer and foundation
Lancome blusher
Smashbox gel eye liner
Mascara - bobbi brown
Nude lipstick

Done.

Eliza22 · 19/03/2014 08:10

Lancôme Teint Idole 24 HR Foundation
Laura Mercier Wild Bouquet or Lotus Pink Blusher
Lancome Rouge In Love lippie
Bourgois felt tip Eye Liner (brown one)
L'loreal Telescope Mascarra in Brown

Don't need powder with the Lancôme foundation Smile

KosherBacon · 19/03/2014 08:20

My five are
1 Botanics BB cream or Bourjois foundation (I use 123, healthy mix and the healthy mix serum!)
2 Mac Plumfoolery blush
3 Too Faced Shadow Insurance which stops my eyeshadow creasing
4 MAC Vex eyeshadow
5 L'Oreal Beauty Tubes mascara in black (been using this for five years. Have tried others but NOTHING compares to it)

missmargot · 19/03/2014 08:50

My five are:

  • Smashbox Colour Corrector Primer
  • Touche Éclat
  • Benefit Speed Brow
  • Benefit They're Real mascara
  • Nars Multiple in Orgasm
iliketea · 19/03/2014 08:57

I'm 36, and after deciding to sort out my face(via the Bobbi brown counter); my 5 are:

  1. Bobbi brown face base vit e
  2. BB long lasting foundation 3)BB translucent powder
  3. peachy coloured blush
  4. black mascara

It was like a revelation, the first time I've gone to a make up counter and asked to look like a more polished version of myself, and they did it (I've always felt over made upand like a clown when I've tried other make up counters).

ChablisChic · 19/03/2014 09:00

I'm 59, with reasonable skin.

Max Factor Ageless Elixir foundation
Touch Eclat
Lancome Hypnose mascara
Burts Bees tinted lipbalm
and sometimes some Revlon powder eyeshadow

AntoinetteCosway · 19/03/2014 09:19

30 with fairly normal skin, some dryness, some oilyness.

Laura Mercier radiant primer
Smashbox BB cream-palest colour (I mix it with the primer)
Nars Creamy Concealer-Vanilla
Sleek blusher-Rose Gold
Any mascara in Black (I like Loreal Telescopic, YSL, Laura Mercier...)
Anastasia Brow Wiz in Ash Blonde

Sorry, that's 6. Can't get it to 5.

sillymillyb · 19/03/2014 09:26

I am 33 with dry / normal skin.... With spots. I'm vair attractive!

If i could only use 5 daily they would be:

  1. Estée Lauder double wear

  2. benefit erase paste (for under eyes and spots!)

  3. bronzer (any brand - I'm not fussy!)

  4. mascara (I like ysl fake lashes one)

  5. I use the 24 hour lip stains, I can't remember brand though.

I would love some eye shadows, an eye liner and a lip liner in there too but would survive without.

MerylStrop · 19/03/2014 09:31

44, pale with freckles, normal to dry skin

Boots 17 BB cream (brilliant)
Benefit Butterfly blusher
Laura Mercier concealer for dark shadows
Bobbi brown lipstick in nude (its a kind of orange colour, not a manly fleshy shade, suits anyone and any occasion)

MAYBE - liquid eyeliner - in bronze or green or navy

TWEEZERS and moisturiser would do though.

MerylStrop · 19/03/2014 09:33

Also get eyebrows tinted, and lashes tinted.

I have crappy eyelashes, short and pointless, mascara never works on me. Tinting is the answer, gives definition and colour and takes 5 mins once a month.

Plateofcrumbs · 19/03/2014 10:08

Glad I'm not only one who counts eyebrow pencil in top 5! They seem to be increasingly hard to find in shops, I was wondering if I was the only person who used them.

I'm 36, skin that is dry, sensitive and acne prone at same time.

Can't live without:
Mineral powder foundation (l'oreal)
Mascara (waterproof, don't stick to a particular brand)
Liquid concealer/touché éclat rip-off (l'oreal)
Blusher (cream usually - Revlon at moment)
Eyebrow pencil (whatever I can find)

Add to that:
A liquid eyeshadow (Revlon)
Lip balm

I normally do foundation/concealer at home after moisturising and do rest of make up on the train to work (controversial!!) so use things like cream blusher as not messy, don't need to faff with brushes etc.

RoganJosh · 19/03/2014 10:12

Bare minerals foundation
Eyeshadow worn as eyeliner - currently a bronze colour from Elizabeth Arden
Lip colour - sheer lipstick usually in a browny pinky sort of colour

I'd then add mascara (max factor, not sure which type) and blusher, Elizabeth Arden a peachy colour if I wanted to look more 'done'/human.

RoganJosh · 19/03/2014 10:13

Eyebrow pencil is in the top four if my eyebrows haven't been dyed recently.

Freewheelin · 19/03/2014 10:17

50
Kohl pencil in brown.
Rimmel moisturising lipstick in Heather Shimmer

Fouette · 19/03/2014 10:28

I'm 28 with slighty oily skin that goes veerrrrrry shiney at the drop of a hat.

Opulash mascara by Mac
Nars radiant creamy concealer - it's fab.
MAC painterly pro long wear paint pot - it wakes up my eye area and changes my whole face. Amazing.
Cream blush - I use lots of different ones but Nars Riviera is my go to.
Bobbi Brown brightening finishing powder

If I could choose more than 5 I would add an eye liner and lip something.

MrsMcColl · 19/03/2014 16:20

Age 41. Dry skin. Fairly pale with freckles.

My five are:

Max Factor natural beige foundation
Blusher/bronzer - something cheap from superdrug, mosaic of colours that you swirl together (love this)
Soft eyeliner pencil in brown
Rimmel eye-shadow in slightly shimmery brown
Max Factor brown/black mascara

Also some kind of tinted lipbalm. And I really don't like going without my Rimmel under-eye concealer. (Eye bag cream, as DD1 cruelly calls it.)

WhatWouldCaitlinDo · 19/03/2014 16:24

Laura Mercier tinted moisturiser
Black mascara - any old one, currently using L'oreal
Rimmel liquid eyeliner
Pink blusher - Laura Mercier
Baby lips lipstick - Laura Mercier again (this is the best pink lipstick by a mile I think. they're usually too garish or too brown)

TheRaniOfYawn · 19/03/2014 16:24

I'm 38 with pale, dry sensitive skin. My five would be:

Garnier BB cream
Benefit High Beam
Benefit Dandelion (winter) or Nars Orgasm (summer)
Brown/black mascara. I don't have a brand I love since my old favourite was discontinued.
Pinky brown lipstick. My current favourite is a cheap Revlon one.

mumatwork999 · 19/03/2014 17:19
  1. concealer (if needed - usually is!)
  2. blusher
  3. eye liner or mascara or neutral eye shadow
  4. lip gloss

all No 7 (reliable and good value) and done in a flash before i leave for work and while trying to keep 3YO from putting stuff down the loo. Carry similar kit in bag for top-ups but usually forget to do any. I'm 43 with fair sensitive skin prone to spots (most unfair when combined with onset of wrinkles!!).

skyninja · 19/03/2014 17:28

concealer - currently Clinique pen type one
mineral powder, sometimes pressed, normally a loose one.
Mac blusher - pinch o'peach or a more terracotta (is nicer than it sounds) colour which handily doubles as a bronzer.
Mac eyeshadow palette
Mac waterproof eyeliner in dark grey

I would forgo mascara as long as I had a decent eyeliner. If I'm not too spotty I would swap concealer for a red lipstain, I like the Bourjois one or my rather nice Dandelion Benefit lip gloss.

skyninja · 19/03/2014 17:30

Oh, and I am pale, freckly, fair haired, 40, with dryish skin and nearly always sporting at least two super spots.

Aquelven · 19/03/2014 18:53

Bare Minerals foundation
Compact powder blusher
Max Factor 2000 Calorie mascara
Liner pencil, no fixed make
Lipstick, usually Clarins or No7
