Can someone explain how the bra measuring method everyone on here raves about works?

Seen a few thread titles alluding to it but could some please explain exactly how to measure yourself? Desperately need new bras but usually guess my sizes.

Just done this as I'm pregnant and my 40f bras are getting a bit tight - I'm 41" and 51" which means a 40/42 GG? That makes sense as I tried on a 42f a few weeks ago (it was the biggest cup they had) and a 40g - the first too small in the cup and the second too small in the band. Now I just need to try to find a bra in the rihht size!

Wishitwaswarmer · 14/03/2014 21:02

Hi, I would really appreciate some help. I think I have quite a high rib cage as my top ribs are noticeable under clothes. I have just measured and am 32" under if I'm standing upright (nearer 34 if at 90 degrees) and 37" around whole breast (bent at 90 degrees). I have never had a good bra! Thank you

Thanks so much for the reply. I've been in 34/36 A/B my whole life so this could be a revelation!Smile

wispa31 · 14/03/2014 21:14

At the min, 38E. Before i would have been in c or d cup! Obv pregnancy and bfing has changed them, they look like spaniels ears :( defo need to be wearing underwiring again. Still cant believe i should be an h cup!! Can u recommend any good brands?

StatisticallyChallenged · 14/03/2014 21:25

OK whilst that sounds crazy, a 38E is designed for someone measuring 44 around - just a lot more under!

StatisticallyChallenged · 14/03/2014 21:27

Oh good brands - the good "big boob" brands are freya, fantasie, panache, cleo by panache, curvy kate, bravissimo, ewa michalak. Which one will suit best depends on your breast shape really

Gah. Try 32ff, 30f, 32f and 32e

wispa31 · 15/03/2014 07:29

thank you :) are any of those available in debenhams?

StatisticallyChallenged · 15/03/2014 07:35

They stock Freya and fantasie and occasionally some of the others. You might not find your perfect bra as not everyone suits every brand but it should give you an idea of size. Debenhams also have an own brand gorgeous range which are notorious for running small in the back

AuntieMaggie · 15/03/2014 08:49

I like Debenhams own brand bras especially the t-shirt type bras and sometimes you can get them in the sale which is always a bonus.

poorbuthappy · 15/03/2014 08:54

And don't forget when you first wear your new bra it is going to feel bloody tight because you have been wearing the wrong size for so long.
The band does most of the support work not the straps.
So please don't give up!

ShotgunNotDoingThePans · 15/03/2014 09:09

Sorrel sorry I didn't reply yesterday; was travelling.
Will have a look at my brands/styles when I get home, but I know I have a Freya Deco which gives quite a nice shape but still has a hint of bulging left boob.
All the others have unlined, sewn cups.

DownstairsMixUp · 15/03/2014 09:51

I think the 30 back size I have been wearing is wrong then? I can easily fit four or five fingers under the back and it needs tightening quite a bit. Is that a sign it's too big? I have a 30H on at the moment!

StatisticallyChallenged · 15/03/2014 09:58

I'd maybe try the 28. How does The cup fit? If it's about right try a 28hh

DownstairsMixUp · 15/03/2014 11:40

There's a tiny bit of room. I can store an s3 down there. Grin but they sit quite nice iyswim like I can bend over and they aren't in any danger of spilling out. Maybe I should order a 28hh and a 28gg and send back the one that doesn't fit?

StatisticallyChallenged · 15/03/2014 12:20

Order an h and hh

cartoontrickster · 15/03/2014 19:58

I remeasured myself again! the absolute tightest I can get the tape measure around my back is 29 . around the boob if I loosely measure its 38. but I'm never sure how tightly I should be measuring. what brands come up slightly bigger on the back? although my 30 backs sometimes seem to ride up I feel like a 28 would be far too tight. I like the freya patsy half cup I'd the shape I like I feel like it gives a nice shape but they often dig in under my arm. any suggestions?

AntiDistinctlyMinty · 15/03/2014 20:21

I measure at 39.5 and 49 (!) so am I right in thinking that makes me a 40GG? I'm currently in a 38E...

AntiDistinctlyMinty · 15/03/2014 20:21

I should say, I've got very broad ribs and not a lot of back fat - it makes getting tops/dresses that fit a bloody nightmare!

StatisticallyChallenged · 15/03/2014 20:51

Ok, if you try scooping (see upthread!) in the 38E what happens? I know you said you don't have back fat, but what about armpit fat?

Lota · 16/03/2014 10:17

Can you please help me here? I am 28.5 under and 33 over bust. Thank you.

AntiDistinctlyMinty · 16/03/2014 10:24

I don't get the four boob look but there is a fair bit of cleavage; Mills and Boone would be proud!

StatisticallyChallenged · 16/03/2014 10:45

Lota start with 28dd
