Are you a winter colouring? If so come and join us for chat about clothes/make up following on from part 1 here and part 2 here

Do you want to know more about what a winter is? These resources are good places to start here and here.

Scared to try bright lipstick? Previous winter favourite makeup items include Mac Plumful, Revlon Lip Butters in Berry Smoothie and Red Velvet and Revlon gloss in Bordeaux. They are all good places to start without being scarily bright for a newly diagnosed winter. More makeup tips can be found here and by reading through previous threads.

Brilliant! Thanks Sorrell, I have googled loads of times trying to find some kind of conversion chart, no idea how I haven't seen that before.
I will now wear my Mac Plumful with confidence.

Standingonlego · 13/04/2014 09:50

I have had both HoC and CMB - HoC years ago and was a winter, CMB more recent and was Clear and Cool :) This is a lovely thread but dangerous to the debit card

QueenCadbury · 13/04/2014 09:58

Welcome chocchip

FaceDirectionOfTravel · 13/04/2014 11:44

Very dangerous to the credit card. But I look fantastic. Grin. Grin. Grin.

pinkflaming0 · 13/04/2014 11:49

Sorrel ha, sorry for making you visit the Kettlewell site!

Will have to try dark claret as I'm after a top and no tops in raspberry only skirts. Will order the slash neck 3/4 sleeve top and see how I get on. That's one of the few styles I like so at least that's good. Lobelia is another ** of mine and I have nothing in that colour either so may will try a camisole in that too. Shame the cropped cardi is out of stock in small.

Footwear is my next challenge - have just ordered these caged sandals hoping that the 'natural mix' is grey based and these black and white loafers.

Need to step away from the laptop now and go and do some gardening Grin

VenusDeWillendorf · 13/04/2014 11:59

Thanks so much ladies, I find that if I stick to jewel tones: really bright pink, purples, royal blues, reds, strong greens, charcoals and white n black, I look great in winter, when my skin is pale, but as I tan quite deeply to an olive, (whenever i can get to the sun!!) and my hair lightens I'm more summery, and can wear more of a muted summer palate. (Summer clothes look absolutely terrible on me in winter) and I can absolutely NEVER wear tan, peach, creams or oyster.

Can you change over the year? Anyone?

pinkflaming0 · 13/04/2014 12:46

Venus I'm no expert but from what I've heard/read having a natural sun tan doesn't change your underlying skin tone so isn't relevant to what season you are. I've not heard of the concept of changing your season depending on the time of year.

I have pale olive skin and tan to darker olive quite easily (given the chance!) so you can have olive skin and be a winter.

Maisie0 · 15/04/2014 01:24

Queencadbury Thank you for clarifying. I am not sure what my best colours are. I have not been searching for new items lately but I am rehauling my wardrobe, and I will have to look for a dress for a wedding this year. So I keen to know the colour combinations. I just realised that most of the colours on this palette are more or less what I do have at home. A lot of light blues. Dark blue, black. Whites. Pink. Red. I am trying to stay away from the strong red or blue though. I am not really sure what looks good for summer.

I learnt that I am a "winter" from this site. But I have no idea what is the cool or the clear category.

VenusDeWillendorf · 15/04/2014 02:06

Thanks pinkflamingo, I have olive based skin, but it's very pale in winter, so the bright jewel colours look good then, also dark greens and charcolas, in summer I think the brights are too bright, and the darks too dark, and I gravitate towards a more muted palate- light blues, cool lilacs and tangerine sorbets, with cool yellows.

Think liz Hurley / Courtney cox colouring moving to Jenifer aniston ( if that doesn't require too much brain bleach.)

Does anyone else hang up their dark, bright Winter clothes in summer and go for a more muted, but still cool Summer palate? Or is that "allowed"?!

SorrelForbes · 15/04/2014 11:00

My latest purchases have just arrived. Mixed success:

White Reiss t-shirt - shapeless and clingy all at the same time. Returning. The hunt for a silk/faux silk white top continues...

Hot Pink top - an almost perfect colour match for swatch 16 (Magenta). The S was too small across my 30GGs and the L was massive everywhere. The M is of course sold out. I will be returning both Sad

Meditteranean Blue slub top - a really good colour match for swatch 11 (Electric Blue) which is one of my ** at 50%. A keeper.

White Johnnie B dress - a gamble which hasn't paid off. A lovely fit (size 16yrs) but about 3" too short - boo.

Green sandals - funny toe cleavage at the side! Returning.

So, if anyone spots that FWM top in a M let me know (or a white, silk t-shirt!)

Sorrel, I've just bought this, might not be what you're looking for, but I'm hopeful the colour is nice in real life

Maisie0 · 15/04/2014 12:31

Sorrel, have you checked your body shape before ? It sounds to me that you want a "tunic" shape top.
chummabazzar.tumblr.com/post/20348737766/womenbodytypes

I had to throw out a lot of items that do not fit. I realised that I am an Apple, and that the top shape which fits me the best is also a "tunic" style top. I used to think that it is quite loose, but when I see myself in the mirror, it just fits. I also do not have any clingy tops any more either.

If you like White tops. You may want to check out The White Company. I have bought cotton shirts before but they were very restrictive and it always makes me feel very hot. Their knit is very thin, light and comfortable.

SorrelForbes · 15/04/2014 13:49

Maisie0 Yes, I've done the HoC style day which assesses your shape etc. along with your style. I'm a very curvy hourglass shape and have a totally flat stomach (and big hips!). Tunics look very, very bad on me. I need structure Grin.

I want a white silk t-shirt to wear with this skirt which I have in navy. I have a couple of white t-shirts but they're too thin and clingy. I want something that's cut well at the waist. I have this in grey and red and it's perfect. If only it came in white!

Witchywitch I dithered over that top as I thought it might be too thick for Spring and Summer? Let me know what it's like!

bettybigballs · 15/04/2014 15:35

ohhhhh sorrel I've accidentally had a boden shop, thanks to your med blue top. I figured that i had a discount code so i may as well also get one in navy and one in black, oh and the denim pencil i had my eye on and oh the black swimsuit i'd had a look at last week...

This thread is wonderful but so so dangerous!

Maisie0 · 15/04/2014 15:51

Venus That is a good idea I think. I know that in the past, I have worn a dark top and a dark bottom as well and I boil as I walk on a very sunny day. Lol.

I think a "summer look" is probably made up of say at least a top or a bottom in a lighter colour. I've been sitting here thinking what makes a summery look. I'm starting to struggle actually. Last year, I bought a dark navy shirt dress. Then a separate white top and jeans.

Sorrel I see what you mean by structure now. The link that you sent to me shows an ivory colour top as well. Is that a possibility? I checked the white company ones, and I think they are not double structured pieces. How about this one?
www.lyst.com/clothing/weekend-by-maxmara-niagara-silk-short-sleeved-top-ivory/

SorrelForbes · 15/04/2014 20:03

A lovely top but ivory or cream are no-nos for me as a winter.

VenusDeWillendorf · 16/04/2014 03:13

Thanks Maisie, last year I wore a pink and white wrap dress, (small bird patterns) and black cotton bolero cardi untill it fell apart- also a stretchy sleeveless navy dress and a white jacket which I paired with bright pink ballet flats.

I just feel the dark colours are too dark for the summer. And all black, or navy can look funereal.

I think the little camisole and then cardigan and then trousers or skirt in three tonal colours is actually how I'll dress this summer - it's hard when you're working not to just want to wear colour block dark winter work clothes, with the dark jacket, but I think I'll get some light icy green/ pink/ blue tops, white camis, and some dark green / fushia/ navy trousers, and just wear tonal outfits, and that way if it gets hot this summer I won't bake, as I can pop off some layers and still be pulled together.

Thanks all.

Witchywitch · 16/04/2014 08:57

I will sorrell

SorrelForbes · 16/04/2014 11:30

I can feel myself gravitating towards all the ice colours plus navy/white for the spring/summer.

Today I'm wearing the Boden blue top (mentioned above) with an ice green cardigan, mid blue jeans and my white converse dance. I think it looks nice and fresh (if a little too casual for my romantic classic style).

My Kettlewell long camisole in Ice Aqua arrived today. It's a good length but the colour isn't quite as 'icy' as I'd expected it to be. I'm going to keep it though as I can see it being useful under lots of tops and cardigans.

I also received a lovely top from Crew today, in a replacement size (which I'd forgotten I'd ordered!). It's called Louisa and is code W32-29336. It's not showing on their website anymore which is a bit odd. It Navy with a sequined (in a geometric pattern) front. It has sleeves (yay!) and will be a great 'going-out' top with jeans or trousers for the Autumn and Winter.

Witchywitch · 16/04/2014 13:15

Not sure if anyone has mentioned these before, but if am loving the convertible colours by Stila, in poppy and rose. They are for lips and cheeks, although i only use them as lipsticks. They come in a palette rather than a stick so apply with a brush, or my favourite is with my finger for a lip stain look. Fab winter colours.

SorrelForbes · 16/04/2014 13:20

Thanks Witchywitch, I don't need more lipsticks!

I've just bought two HoC lipsticks (62 Deep Fuchsia and 302 Matt Raspberry), both of which I trialled yesterday. They are very, very similar but I (and my friends who I modelled them both for) preferred 62 on me as it was a cooler shade.

62 was one of the recommended colours on my colour day but I didn't buy it as it just seemed so bright. 5 months on, it seems fine!

QueenCadbury · 16/04/2014 15:57

sorrell 62 is one of my favourites. I tend to wear it for going out as it's relatively bright and I like having a going out lipstick. Am I odd Grin.

I've looked at the icy kettlewell colours and they don't seem to look very icy but I just assumed that was because of the computer.

I've been shopping...
dress for a couple of parties I have in June
grey blouse
another grey blouse
navy blouse for going out.

flewlady · 16/04/2014 17:55

Bought this RJR dress from Debenhams of all places. Not sure what to use as a cover up - a navy cardigan would drown it. Is a white cardigan something to consider or spectacularly old-fashioned - I am nearly 50 Grin

It has a frilly neckline - would a necklace be a no-no?

FaceDirectionOfTravel · 16/04/2014 19:02

White cardi would look lovely. Saw a v stylish lady wearing navy pencil, some sort of top, white cardigan and grey shoes. She looked so well put together, it really made me realise the power of good style.
