Are you a winter colouring? If so come and join us for chat about clothes/make up following on from part 1 here and part 2 here

Do you want to know more about what a winter is? These resources are good places to start here and here.

Scared to try bright lipstick? Previous winter favourite makeup items include Mac Plumful, Revlon Lip Butters in Berry Smoothie and Red Velvet and Revlon gloss in Bordeaux. They are all good places to start without being scarily bright for a newly diagnosed winter. More makeup tips can be found here and by reading through previous threads.

Also a Shellac girl, wearing negligee at the moment: fantastic neutral. I also really like Cake Pop which is a solid pale pink.

ItHasANiceRingWhenYouLaugh · 25/07/2014 08:24

I am loving mid to dark grey nail polish at the moment, and I'm wearing OPI's Touring America just now and quite like it.

QueenCardigan · 25/07/2014 08:29

foogle I only own one opi and it's does my chihuahua bite. Bought it years ago and it's a bit too coral-y to be a winter colour but I still love it on my toes.

Pondering trying ice pink as I'm getting a bit bored of fuschia.

SorrelForbes · 25/07/2014 08:43

I'm getting my nails done later so may ask for Cake Pop, it sounds perfect.

ItsNotUnusualToBe · 25/07/2014 10:45

Just a quick post to say I love this thread.

I probably follow many of you on Pinterest - very inspiring bunch you are.

I'm a sultry winter romantic classic with a passion for cardigans. So I'm afraid I particularly stalk sorrelforbes and queencardigan :)

mimiasovitch · 25/07/2014 15:21

Carrie - I've done a bit of dyeing, with mixed success. First I used Dylon Flamingo to dye a coral t-tshirt and 3 metres of black fabric cursed with camel coloured spots. I now have 3 metres of fabulous hot pink spotted fabric, and a hot pink tshirt. I then tried Dylon Ocean blue on a cream T and an orange dress. I'd only worn the dress once as it never felt right, so had nothing to lose (don't mention ebay). The t shirt came out a lovely blue, but a bit summery, and whilst the dress came out a lovely purple, the embroidery on the hem couldn't have been in cotton thread, at least not on the reverse, so was a bit disastrous. Soooooo, bought 2 packets of Jaquard dye, both purple, one for cotton, one for polyester, and stovetop dyed both items again. It smells. Anyway, the t shirt is a glorious royal purple and the dress a lovely damson, with some hints of orange thread on the topstitching around the waist, but wearable nonetheless. I may employ a sharpie.

In summary - stick to cotton because polyester dye requires you to boil on a stove for an hour, making your house smell, and the results aren't certain. And if in doubt at least we look fabulous in charcoal and black Grin.

SorrelForbes · 25/07/2014 15:21

I love a good cardigan! However, they are really too 'casual' for me but I often succumb. A women cannot live by blazer/jacket alone.

SorrelForbes · 25/07/2014 15:59

The pink dress from Atterly Road arrived today. Colour wise it is a good match for shade 18 hot pink. It didn't do a great deal for me really which seeing as hot pink is only a very good at 50% isn't a surprise. Nice shape and material and I think I would have kept it but like many dresses it needs taking up about 5" on the shoulders. There is a mass of unfilled material so I'm afraid it's going back!

carrie74 · 25/07/2014 17:53

mimi thanks for the précis, that's just what I needed. So with the flamingo, presumably it's just the spots that are pink, and the rest stayed black?

I think both dresses are viscose jersey which should be ok as it's a natural fabric?

Shame about the dress Sorrel, but v sensible to return if it doesn't work x

pinkflaming0 · 25/07/2014 18:06

Sorrel I tend to like the pictures in the Boden catalogue more than the stuff when it arrives! Being tall and with a small waist compared to hips and bust their cut just isn't for me.

I have some luck with shoes (if they come in 39.5). I like their 60's style stuff mainly rather than anything that screams 'BODEN'.

Got some lovely kitten heel patent 60's heels in the previous sale in both black and burgundy. Love the burgundy especially and now I know they are a top colour for me too.

The slouchy leather bag in pewter looks good and the 60's mini but would prefer a winter bright not navy or black.

Was in Next this afternoon doing a massive online return - I basically order anything I vaguely like in 8 Tall when the directory comes out as anything nice goes out of stock in a flash. Picked up a burgundy scarf with a butterfly print - normally a bit girly for me but the colours are so right on me. The first burgundy item I've managed to find and it's a ** for me.

Also bought three leather belts with silver coloured buckles in black, navy and grey.

Have kept this silver bag. Still not totally convinced as it's a bit plasticky but it's an item I won't be using everyday so wouldn't want to spend a lot. It's a good size for an evening out.

Also kept this plum bikini - already been on my hols but a lovely colour and fit so put away for next time.

If I did a style day, would my style change if I lost a couple of stone?
Also do you think style can be diagnosed over the internet?

IsItFridayYetPlease · 25/07/2014 21:51

I was told, no, I would keep the basic underlying shape even if ( when ) I lose weight. I suppose my basic bone structure would remain constant. e.g. skirt lengths / cut, trouser types, dress styles, necklines and sleeve lengths.

The style was more based on your personality than body shape. I can't remember the questions asked to come to my style conclusion (gamine), but only one or two were shape / size related.

The bit I'm still working at pulling together is that I was advised on shapes of garments to match my body proportions and shape, then given a style personality that seemed to suggest slightly different garment shapes.

NowhereNow · 25/07/2014 22:26

I've tried a few Dylon machine dyes, Carrie: burlesque red, dark green and antique grey. The antique grey wasn't great - it has an odd greenish tinge - but the burlesque red was a lovely burgundy shade. Annoyingly the stitching didn't take the dye so on one pair of trousers I used a berry coloured sharpie to colour in the thread (it wasn't a perfect match, but I prefer it to white stitching). I still have a box of Dylon navy dye to try and I have a khaki coat that I'm thinking of dyeing either black or dark green.

Stokey · 25/07/2014 22:50

That sounds a bit confusing IsitFriday. Did you find the style day useful despite that?

IsItFridayYetPlease · 25/07/2014 23:05

Yes, very useful. I'm getting the hang of pulling together colour, shape and style personality now. It certainly helped me define why I'm drawn to particular style looks and why I look so awful in square necklines. I was shown which clothes would hide the bits I don't like and how important proportions of clothes are. My consultant sent me a collection of pictures of clothing, hairstyles and famous people with the same style personality as me. I don't find it easy to find clothes to fit all the criteria, but when I do I know they are really right.

GingerLemonTea · 25/07/2014 23:36

How many style categories are there?

QueenCardigan · 26/07/2014 08:34

carrie I've had mixed success with dyeing. It all depends on the fabric but it also annoys me that the stitching doesn't dye. I dyed a pale blue cardi intense violet which is a lovely shade of purple but has faded a bit in the wash. Don't bother with antique grey as it has a green tinge as someone else said. One of the greens was rubbish too ( can't remember which one) as it certainly wasn't bright or vivid enough. The black snd navy are good for refreshing things that have faded.

ginger there's 6 main categories (natural, classic, gamine, romantic, ingenue, dramatic) but you are usually a mixture of two. From looking online I guessed I'd be some kind of natural but wouldn't necessarily have picked ingenue for myself as on it's own it's really girly. But combined the two really make sense for me. I found it really useful as well finding out about the scale of thngs ie avoiding large prints/collars/lapels.

itsnotunususl who are you on pin?

Stokey · 26/07/2014 08:36

It does sound fascinating. I haven't had it done Ginger but have been googling it, I think there are 6 categories but lots of people are a mixture of both.

I found this which defines them and makes me think I'm a gamine but not sure how the boobs fit in!

Rather confusingly there are whole other lot of "archtypes" - the Kibbe ones, which I think the Sci/Art system that is more common in the US use. A quiet week at work has fed my obsession too much!

Stokey · 26/07/2014 08:40

Cross-post QueenC - you are far more of an expert!

pinkflaming0 · 26/07/2014 11:18

Interesting link Stokey. I'm 5'9.5" and size 8 (definitely not sturdy) so all I could be by those definitions is 'dramatic'. I am to an extent (definitely NOT Cher though!) I know I get noticed if I wear certain things which I do like. But, I definitely also have more than a tendancy to 'gamine' which is interesting as they are most definitely meant to be short by those definitions although I do have a small build.

Interesting that for gamines dark hosiery should be sheer - I am wedded to my dark opaque tights from at least September to May! I do love a short skirt or shorts but only if I can wear opaque tights.

I think the style day would be fun and very interesting but I'm pretty sure and secure in what styles suit me and my personality so I'm loath to spend the money.

brightlikeme1211 · 26/07/2014 13:11

revlon and Mac are the best Lipsticks they are the best BRANDS

Stokey · 26/07/2014 15:55

5'9 size 8 sounds lovely pinkflamingo Envy

I'm sure lots of models, actresses are similarly proportioned and are all different styles. Keira Knigtley strikes me as a tall gamine, while Nicole Kidman is classic I think.

I know what you mean about the style day. I feel quite confident that I know what suits me but would be interested in a third-party take.

QueenCardigan · 26/07/2014 16:53

I've been a sheep and just bought lose your lingerie nail polish. I've got home and tried it on one finger and not at all sure Hmm. Also bought a new lipstick as it was half price with the polish. Will link later.

NowhereNow · 26/07/2014 18:54

I picked up a bottle of bright pink Rimmel nail polish at the supermarket, the shade is Don't Be Shy 323. I've done my toes with it & am pleased with the colour.

GingerLemonTea · 26/07/2014 19:31

Is there any way of working out your style online? Any good links?
I have a 5 week old so can't see me getting back to my consultant anytime soon!
