I was going to say ebay for prom dress - that one in the link is lovely Crem, and perfect for a 15 yr old. Strops you can get those multiway strap bras with see-through straps which are very good for playing around with on different neckline dresses - I have one similar to this and it works well.

bigTillyMint · 11/03/2014 15:24

Yes, love that dress - I bet your DD would look fab in it Stropps, or indeed any other dress - they are so gorgeous at their ageSmile

hattymattie · 11/03/2014 15:32

Hello Stropps -we have the same prom dress story here. Definitely easier when it was the school disco. Love the link by the way - although my DD said prom dresses have to be long! DD decided she wanted a long backless dress - my tactic was to moan about this everywhere I went until an American friend came up with the goods and has lent her a fabulous thing and in the process saved us a fortune.

motherinferior · 11/03/2014 15:58

I do wish I hadn't been so self-conscious at 15. And at 25. I suspect I was not quite as hideous and flabby as my mother I convinced myself I was...Grin

Cezella · 11/03/2014 16:53

I have resisted and resisted asking this question as I don't want to appear in any way stupid but curiosity has finally got the better of me!! What are "Crepeys"?!

NUFC69 · 11/03/2014 17:06

Mmm, I can empathise there, MI. When I was in my 20s I weighed under 9 and a half stone and was convinced that I was too heavy (I am about 5' 7" so you can see that I was hardly overweight). I look at young girls now and envy them their lovely figures and confidence which I was so sadly lacking. It's interesting therefore to read that today's youngsters have the same insecurity that I did (and rather sad) as I was hoping that it was something that had been relegated to the past.

Well I spent the morning at the Centre for Life's preschool day which was great: we made play dough, "played" the pan pipes, watched a show about monsters in the sky in the planetarium which DGS loved, touched bugs (I [yes, me] actually touched a hissing cockroach!!!), sang songs and danced - the whole experience was very positive and it's good to know that there are places like this available now to take youngsters to. We will definitely go again and I am seriously thinking of getting a year's pass to enable us to go anytime we want. The only sad thing was that the majority of the people there (and they were mostly women) were middle class and I felt it was a shame that more youngsters couldn't benefit from the experience. Children are free and adults are 5.50 so hardly expensive, but I guess even 5.50 is a lot if you haven't much disposable income.

motherinferior · 11/03/2014 17:35

Ooh, NUFC, there is a great Tea event on in July round your way - looks fab. Cake and all.

Cezella....ah. Well, Crepeys are laydeez a certain age whose formerly spotty dewy skin has become, well, crepey. Effectively it is a support group for those of us who are refusing to go gentle into that good night.

NUFC69 · 11/03/2014 17:52

Ooh, what's the tea event, MI? Do tell, or at least point me in the right direction. I love afternoon tea - so civilised. Funny thing is that the DC re-introduced me to it. (The other thing they introduced me to is breakfasting out - unheard of when I was their age!).

motherinferior · 11/03/2014 18:53

Whole arty tea-based weekend in June. My sister's girlfriend, who is big in the arts round your way, told me. Will dig out dates later but am extremely knackered after a day which seemed to combine a lot of work with getting precisely nowhere...

bigTillyMint · 11/03/2014 18:57

NU, I was a fat child/teen but lost weight and was about 9 stone in my 20's and 5'8" - I made the most of itGrin

Breakfast and tea out - way to go!

NUFC69 · 11/03/2014 19:50

BTM, my DS and his wife paid for us to have afternoon tea at the Plaza just of Central Park in New York for our fortieth wedding anniversary - it was wonderful. And then the MaitreD came over with champagne for us... lovely memories. On a more prosaic note, our local garden centre does nice breakfasts: I think DD and her family find that it's quite a good way for them to get out when going out in the evening isn't always possible.

NUFC69 · 11/03/2014 19:52

Thanks, MI, will be very interested to hear about the tea thing when you've time to let me know.

cremolafoam · 11/03/2014 20:01

Cezella if you are a certain age do stay! Or stay anywayGrin we are lovely.

I am shattered - is it only Tuesday?
Not helped by 2(two II) work days over the weekend which involved A Westlife, [ singular] and 100s of olden soldiers.
Have a tea dance to look forward to on St. Patricks Day. Love an afternoon tea meself MI and NU. Dressing up 1940s stylee optional.

Stropps dd has several evening dresses she wears for singing in which are full length. All came from Oxfam or similar , but you do have to ask, unless the volunteers are shit hot ready for proms/ end of year parties in June( some of our local charidee shops bung all the long dresses out at the end of May)
Unfortunately dd is a 12 so can't chuck in an envelope for you .

cremolafoam · 11/03/2014 20:02

Anybody watching Sewing Bee.
They're doing Prom DressesGrin

bigTillyMint · 11/03/2014 20:15

NU afternoon tea in NY? Envy Envy[ envy]

Am trying to watch the Sewing Bee but discovering a voicemail from DSs form tutor (having already spoken to the art teacher) has somewhat derailed it...

motherinferior · 11/03/2014 20:28

I cannot face more work. Am going to bed with quite excellent review book. Kamila Shamsie. Her last one was shamefully ignored (Burnt Shadows, quite excellent) in favour, I suspect, of Kiran Desai's novel which was OK but not nearly as good a candidate for 'this year's Asian woman novel'. (Helps that Desai's mum is also a novelistGrin)

bigTillyMint · 11/03/2014 20:31

Oh God and now DD. There must be something in the waterSad

addle · 11/03/2014 21:12

Sorry about about the problems, Auriga, and glad you're making time to sing.

Hattie - are we FB friends? am looming face at angle. you?

prom dresses - TK Maxx good source too. happy to keep an eye out in our local Oxfam for everybody; can ask DS to source top stuff (once Lalsy's DD sorted)

MI - having been clearing out some old photos, I can confirm that in my late teens and early 20s, I was neither fat nor plain, as my mother constantly told me. And I bet you weren't either.

OP posts:
Blackduck · 11/03/2014 21:25

BTM? All okay?

Arses - I have just sent a snippy email to a colleague who I am pissed off with constantly having a go. I suspect it will come back and bite me....

Sometimes it has to be done, BD.

Commiserations to all.

SheherazadeSchadenfreude · 11/03/2014 21:32

Oh and more shit in the Schadenfreude household. DMIL is in hospital. They don't know what is wrong with her - she has been vomiting blood.

OP posts:
Blackduck · 11/03/2014 21:38

Oh MrsS noooo :(

Rudy commiserations - holds hands in solidarity.

Yep MI had to be done, tired of it all being made out to be my teams fault.
