The Anti-Color Analysis Thread

FrugalFashionista · 21/02/2014 09:18

This is a safe space for anyone who
(tick any that apply)

  • wants to burn her scarves
  • will scream if someone goes semantic on 'Oyster'
  • does not want to be made to wear lipstick
  • is not looking forward to the next Kettlewell catalogue
  • does not identify with any particular season
  • will never ever do a style day
  • has self-diagnosed Stockholm syndrome
  • is tired of the tireless marketing drum of color analysis on S&B

I realize I may be endorsing an unpopular view but this thread here is for anyone who does not want to discuss color.

C'mon, am I the only one?
Raise your hand...

PS I will send a crappy lipstick personally chosen for me by a color analyst to the first taker. It's a shimmery peachy tone that has no staying power and streaks your teeth. But don't worry, it will make you look a million times better.

I'm in!

hollyisalovelyname · 21/02/2014 09:59

Check out the HOC post.
Frugal Fashionista and I made comments that questioned the 'Colours' thing.

hollyisalovelyname · 21/02/2014 09:59

Oops. Didn't realize Frugal is the OP

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 21/02/2014 10:07

Oh me. I wear black. And grey. And sometimes a bit of khaki. I don't need anybody to hold bits of fabric up to my face, ta. Even if the colours 'suit' me, I will almost certainly not want to wear them.

FrugalFashionista · 21/02/2014 10:31

Welcome all! Grin
I used to be a cult member true believer but have seen the light lapsed.

Everyone can wear black here!
(So Kate Moss can join too.)
You will not be force fed mauve!

If anyone wants a 100% polyester fake LV scarf in a shade of 'Teal' that will make your eyes 'pop' guaranteed please pm me!

OP posts:
RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 21/02/2014 10:39

I do not, ever, want my eyes to 'pop' - sounds painful.

50ShadesOfMaybe · 21/02/2014 10:50

I'm in! (Although I do like a red lipstick.)

I will wear pretty much any colour and lots of black.

claudeekishi · 21/02/2014 10:52

Oh, interesting!

I've never had my colours done because that's not a 'thing' in the country where I live. I would still like to just know out of morbid interest -- but hell would freeze over before I'd do a style day or wear lipstick. I'm not a lipstick girl. I do smudged eyeliner for nights out and a red lip maybe three times a year.

But: I think it does have its place, surely, as a kind of shorthand code for those who want an edited wardrobe because they aren't good at 'seeing' what works themselves -- and helping people to feel better about how they look is a good good thing IMO.

When it comes to colour analysis, at this time of year, awards season, I always marvel at the A-list on the red carpet. I can't imagine any colour being off-limits to a starlet like Amy Adams or Kerry Washington. Michelle Williams surely should not have been 'allowed' to wear That Vera Wang yellow dress. I think if you're a stylish person with a good eye, you can style any colour to work. But for every day wear, I don't know...it's not a bad idea to wear colours that suit you! I am keeping a ridiculously overpriced paper-thin lurex sweater just because it lights up my face Blush

Frugal, you say you used to be a true believer. What made you change your mind?

claudeekishi · 21/02/2014 10:53

Remus I am all about the popping eyes.

ZenNudist · 21/02/2014 11:01

I'm not anti Colour analysis so much as I don't see the point. I know what colours suit me. I know what doesn't.

My wardrobe is largely confined to a selection of colours that work well together just because its practical. I still have to keep a few neutral items to work with the colours. I do not need to pay anyone to tell me this.

I don't much like black although I am wearing black today as its one if the only Breastfeeding outfits I own.

Must admit, seeing all the colours threads on here I was starting to think I 'should' get it done.

Twooter · 21/02/2014 11:03

You're all deluded. Your lives would be soooo much better if you just gave in and got HOCed.

AmberNectarine · 21/02/2014 11:14

You DO realise it's not compulsory, right?

Apatite1 · 21/02/2014 11:17

Me me me. I wear lipstick about twice a year.

Grockle · 21/02/2014 11:20

I'm curious about HOC but I wear black. And cream. And abit of grey. I don't think I'd change even if I were told that bright orange is the perfect colour for me.

I do wear lipstick though otherwise people tell me I look really ill.

noddyholder · 21/02/2014 11:22

:) Me too. Do not drape anything on me I will wear what I like and if some woman in a fitted blazer and jaunty scarf thinks I look washed out or subdued that is frankly what I am hoping for. I do get the look they are hoping for with certain colours but I don't want that look!

MrsCampbellBlack · 21/02/2014 11:30

I like and suit both cool and warm colours.

I think hoc helps some but its not for me

FrugalFashionista · 21/02/2014 11:34

This is gonna be boring so skip this if you are here just for the bonfire of scarves

I'm pale, so I've known since my early teens that I can't wear certain colors. I met someone who believed in color analysis in the late 1980s (I know) and we worked out that I was a 'Summer'. I wore the colors for a couple of years but they were just so blah that I gave up. Then I had my colors officially done nearly 3 years ago (verdict: Light Summer). I was busy with shopping sprees and wardrobe purges for a good while

Then I realized that the palette that I was given does not harmonize with my eye color (olive green). However, when I accidentally wore clothes that matched my eyes, I got a lot of compliments and felt much more 'me'. I studied my face (skin, eyes, hair) - I seem to be both warm and cool toned. Thanks a lot Mother Nature Then I got a bad facial eczema and had to go barefaced for weeks. The cool-toned pinks and reds my color analyst had picked for me made my face look much worse and I had to ditch them. Without makeup and lipstick, few colors on my palette looked totally right. I worked out what to wear based on trial and error - colors based on my tooth, hair and eye color became some of my most flattering neutrals and I felt great wearing them. But many of they are not on my 'official' palette!

Color analysis seems to be built on the assumption that warm and cool categories are mutually exclusive, but when I started embracing my warm-cool contrasts when dressing, everything started feeling a much more 'me'. I then read a bit about general color theory. Color analysis is not scientific and not really backed up with color science - it's derived from interior decorating Wink and the assessments are pretty subjective and people seem to get totally conflicting verdicts if they see different color analysts. So no, I don't believe in it any more...

Sorry about typos

OP posts:
Floisme · 21/02/2014 11:42

I've never been done and I doubt I ever will as I think I'm reasonably good at seeing what works for me and what doesn't. I have no idea what all this warm/cool seasons business means. However I do think colour makes a huge difference to how you look. And that most people look shite in black. So am I in or am I out? Grin

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 21/02/2014 11:42

I do like scarves though - black ones, grey ones. I even (whispers) have a red one. And a pink one.

Can I still play?

noddyholder · 21/02/2014 11:44

It also depends on if you agree with the consultant that you look 'terrible' in a certain colour. Some colours make you look perkier and brighter but I am not always after that. I agree with MrsC its not for me. I suit a wide range of things

FrugalFashionista · 21/02/2014 11:51

You can wear a scarf here if you feel good in scarves!
But nobody will force you if it's not your thing!
You can wear black and not wear black as long as the rest of the universe can help themselves!

Black is not a great neutral for me but I have party pics to prove that I can look stunning in black...
Will people wear charcoal and navy waterproof mascara to a HoC funeral? Wink

OP posts:
RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 21/02/2014 11:52

I can't say that I have ever, in my 44 years on this earth, got dressed in the hope that I'd look, 'perky.' I am Not Perky and no amount of fuchsia lipstick will change that, I suspect.
